To ask wtf is up with the name of these clothing brands?

Nobody’s child

Little Mistress

Never fully dressed.

Im sure there are more.

I just don’t get it. It’s cringe and depressed.

Also, ‘never fully dressed’ now do children’s clothing too. I just could not buy my child clothing from a company with that name. I don’t know if I’m reading it wrong, I don’t think I am, it just seems to have some kind of suggestive implication.

Always found it hard to keep a straight face outside the Hollister shop
Hollister are also a leading brand in supples for stoma care and wound dressings (which are very necessary and nothing to be ashamed of but don’t really have the same vibe as the gloomy and expensive teen magnet in the high street)

Cissyandflora · 04/01/2022 23:28

I don’t know the song either op. Colour me weird.

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 04/01/2022 23:30

@TheAntiGardener

Under another user name I was once piled on for being a horrible elitist snob for arguing that I’d expect most adults in the UK to have a basic knowledge of major cultural and historical stuff (the thread was about titles of Shakespeare plays), but I will admit to being ignorant of the Never Fully Dressed lyric. I’m aware of Annie, but my knowledge runs out after red hair, Daddy Warbucks and It’s A Hard Knock Life. I think that’s the way I’d like to keep it too!

I still think it’s a perfectly fine name though. I’d assume it referred to always craving more clothes.

You philistine 😱
pigsDOfly · 04/01/2022 23:35

It's ok to admit you're uncultured. You can improve that.

If you think 'Annie' comes under the heading of 'culture' then I rather think it's you that's uncultured.

CeleriacOfTheNight · 04/01/2022 23:35

I can forgive someone not knowing the Annie song, but thinking Bowie never wrote about sex?? Come on Shock

KloppsTeeth · 04/01/2022 23:41

I cannot stand musicals, am mid 40a and have never seen Annie and I don’t know the song. I have a rough idea what Annie is about, and some of the songs from it through general pop culture but I have never heard that expression or song to remember it.

This sums up for me why I hate musicals, if anyone cares (probably not).

TheAntiGardener · 04/01/2022 23:51

@WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia - I’m afraid I’ve mentally filed Annie away in the same not-to-be-opened box as Andrew Lloyd Webber. I know the barest of facts about his works and am content to know no more! (Had a traumatic teenage experience of being taken to an ALW show as a ‘treat’ and being rooted to my seat in horror.)

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2022 23:55

I have never seen Annie in my life, don't know the story, don't know the songs so wouldn't get the reference either.

I also agree with Superdry, doesn't say 'clothing' to me. The stuff looks as if it might be Japanese but the Head Office is Cheltenham. Grin

AutisticLegoLover · 04/01/2022 23:56

White Stuff. It's probably to do with white caps on waves, but still.

I love Karrimor, when it was the original decent quality brand. Carry more not carry less. 18 year old student climber me was mightily amused. And still am Grin

Wasn't there a programme with whatshisface from who wants to be a millionaire where he played lots of dodgy forrin tv commercials for products with often hilarious names?
Barberscum is one of my favourites from shaving foam.

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2022 23:56

Shall I hire a bus so that the uncultured of us on MN can go and see Annie and redeem ourselves?

Tilltheend99 · 05/01/2022 00:13

Off the top of my head Young Americans mentions sex all the way through (without using the word) but on your general points UANBU.

When Andy Warhol said everybody in the future would get their 15 mins of fame I don’t think he meant as a porn star on OnlyFans.

vickyc90 · 05/01/2022 00:19

I'm 31 and honestly don't mind most of these brands, yes I wouldn't wear a PLT branded top as I'm too old but would wear a dress etc from there.

I thought we had moved passed stigmatising words. When I was a teenager Hooch, playboy, Pineapple, FCUK (never French connection in full) and miss Sixty were the go to brands. Pretty sure I had a pink FCUK top that had wet dreams written on it. Makes No body's child and Nasty gal look tame!

Tilltheend99 · 05/01/2022 00:21

@foxlover47

When my Eldest was a teen ( she's 25 now ) I remember miss sexy being the brand all the kids wanted for their school trousers
Are you sure you don’t mean Miss Sixty? Grin

Prior posters are spot on about the Annie song but I expect most young people wouldn’t get the reference so yes, it does sound a bit dodgy

Annie which is still touring, which had revivals in 1997,1998, and 2012? Which vas released on video in 1992? Even now, every single one of my 12 yo daughter’s friends has seen it. And seen the new version which has the same song, albeit with updated references sung by Sia.

The Britney Spears who’s first music vid was her in a school uniform tied up around her midriff, who posed on her bed in her underwear, sucking on a lollipop, for Rolling Stone magazine? It was hardly wholesome in the 90s/00s.

Exactly. Sexualisation of young female musicians was rife in those days. Girl bands with barely any clothes on was definitely a thing early 2000s

Mizz magazine with it’s position of the fortnight. Anyone remember that? It was also the era of Paris Hilton et al with sex tapes and sleazy stories.

Definitely some rose tinting going on here.

sbhydrogen · 05/01/2022 00:33

I've never seen Annie. I know It's a Hard Knock Life, but only because of Jay Z.

Grumbles under breath about hating musicals

Rubyupbeat · 05/01/2022 00:36

Oh come on, you are looking for rude meanings.
My sons are early 30s and believe me hip hop and rap was just as 'filthy ' and drug heavy, when they were early teens, I loved heavy metal, ( still do), back in late 70s, early 80s, bands were soooooo sexist, think bon Jovi, whitesnake, y and t , thunder (too many to mention in fact)
It's nothing new, bloody hell, our lives are being sanitized, along with the boring white, grey and beige homes....

SuffolkDreams · 05/01/2022 00:54

Fat Face = steep/snowy mountain face

White Stuff = surf, snow etc

Nevertheless, I deeply dislike both names as the shops have evolved and their clothing has nothing to do with those things anymore. They should be changed, especially White Stuff… I like their clothes but don’t shop there because of the name…and have actually picked white stuff labels off of their jeans in the past.

feyzer · 05/01/2022 01:00

Yes OP, I’ve seen that EggSlut place on Portobello and thought the same. Hardly makes you want to go in!

I have also wondered about ‘Subdued’ for the tweens on Kings Rd. My girls loved in it there for a while - I don’t get it at all. The clothes are so bland and crap value. Is it called ‘Subdued’ because the clothes are subdued - ie crap and bland? Or is ‘subdued’ meant to imply something like ‘drugged’ or ‘submissive?’ I don’t get the shop at all. It’s either tiny crop tops or massive hoodies. Nothing in between. Horrible brown ‘preppy’ tank tops with diamonds on like a grandfather in the 70s. Rip off prices for stuff you could get for a fiver in a crap market. I don’t get this shop concept at all. Talk about hype over nothing. Brandy Melville is the same.

feyzer · 05/01/2022 01:03

While we’re on unappealing shop names -

Sweaty Betty - really?

feyzer · 05/01/2022 01:06

Basically everything is going downhill

Freecuthbert · 05/01/2022 01:29

Oh ffs, since when is that shite musical the height of culture? I'm not familiar with the song either, I may have watched Annie once many years ago. It's never been a talking point in any conversation in my life really... so how it is part of every day life, god only knows.

I agree with you OP about stuff being over sexualised these days. Maybe you were not right about some of your examples, but I feel like it is a lot worse than the 90s/early 2000s. I think hardcore porn being normalised has a lot to answer for. Yes there was always raunchy stuff back in the day, but it's on a whole different level now. And misogyny is more rife than ever imo.

JeffThePilot · 05/01/2022 02:05

@FallonCarringtonWannabe

I had no idea about this song Im quite shocked an adult has never seen Annie or heard the song youre never fully dressed without a smile.
Never seen Annie or heard the song… and I’m a middle aged member of a musical theatre group 😂
scurryfunger · 05/01/2022 02:17

Girlboss on Netflix is the story behind Nasty Gal - she took ages coming up with the perfect name! It's a good watch btw

immersivereader · 05/01/2022 02:23

I hate the use fo the word 'pimped' meaning improved. What is wrong with these people?

It was used on Coast, ffs
