Nobody’s child

Little Mistress

Never fully dressed.

Im sure there are more.

I just don’t get it. It’s cringe and depressed.

Also, ‘never fully dressed’ now do children’s clothing too. I just could not buy my child clothing from a company with that name. I don’t know if I’m reading it wrong, I don’t think I am, it just seems to have some kind of suggestive implication.

AIBU?

Sweaty Betty puts me right off
I know it’s a sports / gym wear clothes brand but its just yuk
Fat face is unpleasant too

MoniJitchell · 05/01/2022 09:36

I think you're clutching at straws a bit here....as pp said the phrase you're never fully dressed without a smile is part of the common vernacular now even if you don't watch films about singing little orphans, nobody's child is in reference to no child labour involved in the manufacturing process.

I also grew up in the 90s and I remember cringing heavily when songs came on the car radio with my parents - remember the one "you and me baby ain't nothing but mammals so let's do it like they do on the discovery channel" also Eminem had some utter filth on the radio in the early 00s.

GameofPhones · 05/01/2022 09:40

'Missguided' is a good pun, though.

FruitMelange · 05/01/2022 09:41

And Pretty Little Thing- I thought it meant the garment. As in it sells pretty little things, like purses and the like
Me too. I'm surprised anyone could make any other inference.

diddl · 05/01/2022 09:41

"the phrase you're never fully dressed without a smile is part of the common vernacular now"

For whom?

ForkedIt · 05/01/2022 09:43

Banana Republic is pretty horrendous.

Pedalpushers · 05/01/2022 09:51

Britney Spears might not have made any direct references to pussies but she was posing in her underwear as a 16/17 year old girl so I'd say that's FAR worse.

David Bowie might not have directly referenced sexual words but he did have sex with underage groupies and it was perfectly tolerated so again, that's a point to the present day for me.

Nothing bothers me more than bloody clothes shops that send emails calling you 'babe'. 'Check out our new sales babe!' 'Hey babe, here's your next haul!' EFF OFF PLEASE 'babe'.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/01/2022 09:55

@ForkedIt

Banana Republic is pretty horrendous.
I agree, this is the name I find most offensive on this thread.
Laiste · 05/01/2022 09:56

I really don't get this ''everybody knows Annie'' thing. According to What's On Stage it's not even in the top 100 !!

Are quotes from all of these in the 'common vernacular'? Confused

Blossomtoes · 05/01/2022 09:57

I was 17 when Je t’aime mois non plus was banned on Radio 1. That was 50 years ago! Frankly @Latinorapida, you’re a prude.

Envoitrevisage · 05/01/2022 09:57

@Pedalpushers

Bowie more than referenced it. There’s song with sex in the title, lyrics about whores, wanking, orgasms.

feyzer · 05/01/2022 09:57

Sometimes you only realise how ridiculous things are when you apply it to men. ‘Pretty Little Thing’ would become ‘Handsome Medium / Large Thing.’ Yes they’d all go for that.

hivemindneeded · 05/01/2022 09:58

AFAIK, Nobody's Child refers to the fact that nobody's child made these clothes - ie they never use child labour in any part of the manufacturing process. It made me buy from them.

chiefcha · 05/01/2022 10:05

The one that really disgusts me is M&S. Way too similar to S&M for my liking.

Butchyrestingface · 05/01/2022 10:07

@CharlotteGoldenblattYork

I always think Fat Face is a terrible name!
I love the store itself but Fat Face (or Baw Face as I call it in my head) was the first thing that sprang to mind when I read the OP.
Butchyrestingface · 05/01/2022 10:09

Now I'm thinking of Superdry in a new light.

JanglyBeads · 05/01/2022 10:12

I agree OP!

CounsellorTroi · 05/01/2022 10:17

Annie is part of everyday culture? hmm

I’m 60, have never seen Annie and the only song from itI’m aware of is Tomorrow.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 05/01/2022 10:18

@WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps

🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm 42 and have never watched Annie in my life. I'm aware of "Hard knock life" but that's through the Jay-Z song. I agree with you about the names OP.
I'm also 42 and I watched Annie approx 200 times when I was young. Love it. Especially the first song.

I presumed that "nobody's child" is called that because they're an ethical brand and alluding to the fact that nobody's child should have to work as a slave to fashion or similar...

crazyjinglist · 05/01/2022 10:40

YABU. I would be against brand names with really offensive words in them, and I hate clothes with misogynist or offensive slogans on them, but I don't think the examples you picked are a problem at all (especially since you seem to have misunderstood the meaning behind two of them!). I can't understand why you're objecting to Nobody's Child (even without the underlying meaning).

You must either be really sensitive or have a filthy mind, OP!
