Nobody’s child

Little Mistress

Never fully dressed.

Im sure there are more.

I just don’t get it. It’s cringe and depressed.

Also, ‘never fully dressed’ now do children’s clothing too. I just could not buy my child clothing from a company with that name. I don’t know if I’m reading it wrong, I don’t think I am, it just seems to have some kind of suggestive implication.

AIBU?

@ClaudiaWankleman

Annie is part of everyday culture?

Yes. It’s a reference I would expect to be able to throw into my average everyday conversations and it be understood. It’s hardly niche popular culture.

Drop it into conversation at work tomorrow. Report back here how that goes.
BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 04/01/2022 23:12

@SwimmingOnEggshells

I think Sweaty Betty is an ick name
That used to be the name of a chippy in Irish Town, Gibraltar many years ago! Having Sweaty Betty on Saturday night was a regular thing.
jeepersdeepers · 04/01/2022 23:12

The SIA version of the song for the remake peaked at 125 in the UK but was very popular in Poland apparently

Idontknowlondon · 04/01/2022 23:13

@Envoitrevisage

And you do remember the Christina Aguilera videos from the same era as Britney, don’t you?
And you wouldn't bat an eyelid at them now.

It's like nothing is shocking anymore! Though having just said that, I DO think LOL dolls are completely inappropriate from primary age children!

KiloWhat Nasty Gal is a name the founder was called by an ex lover/ wannabe lover or something which she took and turned into a multi million dollar company as a fuck you to that person. So I quite like it.

BruceBogtrottersWife · 04/01/2022 23:14

I don't like 'superdry'.
If I didn't know better I'd think it was a brand of sanitary towels or nappies probably adult ones .

jeepersdeepers · 04/01/2022 23:14

Acne jeans and Sweaty Betty are terrible names

ACNE is ambition to create novel expressions.

Latinorapida · 04/01/2022 23:14

But promise you’ll also report back exactly how you dropped it into the convo !

@BringBackCoffeeCreams

There's a burger chain near us called Bastard Burgers. I'm told they are the best but I'll never know as my pearls wouldn't survive.

I've also managed to avoid the musical Annie for 50 years and had no idea of the song reference.

Although I've never tried it, there's a "Big Baps Butty Van" at the end of the M67...

Tbf that poster may work at the Annie appreciation society.

It isn’t enough the many posters here who know the reference, and the fact a successful business is being run off the back of it?

It’s ok to admit you’re uncultured. You can improve that.

Latinorapida · 04/01/2022 23:17

@Idontknowlondon yes but that’s the thing… you’re one of the handful of people who know that information compared to the vast amount of people who familiar with the brand.

The same goes for nobody’s child and the other brands which posters here have disambiguated. Most people just take these names at face value and it just becomes normalised

How on earth does not knowing one song (which isn't the most famous one from the musical) mean you're uncultured?

I'm 31 and I've never seen Annie. I don't know the song either so I didn't get the reference. It's a bit much to be declaring people "weird" for not having seen it! Grin

Its a tacky musical. I’ll stick to better culture, thanks.

Uncultured because I haven't seen Annie GrinGrin

Fucking hell, that's hilarious. Did you write, direct and star in the movie or something??

Heruka · 04/01/2022 23:22

Nasty Gal came to mind for me too when I read your op. Grim.

and many don't...

IfItsGoodEnough4ShirleyBassey · 04/01/2022 23:23

I offer you the lyrics to Suffragette City.

I don't think Nobody's Child's name does derive from a refusal to use child labour (though they do make a big deal of their ethics) - the sources I can Google say that it's just about being a brand for adults - either way I don't think it's a dodgy name.

When my
Eldest was a teen ( she's 25 now ) I remember miss sexy being the brand all the kids wanted for their school trousers

Do you think their customers are Annie fans? I guarantee that 99 percent of them have no idea

Ah shit. Wrong quote

OP posts:
TheAntiGardener · 04/01/2022 23:24

Under another user name I was once piled on for being a horrible elitist snob for arguing that I’d expect most adults in the UK to have a basic knowledge of major cultural and historical stuff (the thread was about titles of Shakespeare plays), but I will admit to being ignorant of the Never Fully Dressed lyric. I’m aware of Annie, but my knowledge runs out after red hair, Daddy Warbucks and It’s A Hard Knock Life. I think that’s the way I’d like to keep it too!

I still think it’s a perfectly fine name though. I’d assume it referred to always craving more clothes.
