To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

LibbyVonTrap · 01/01/2022 08:30

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

To give Jools his due, he did introduce me to Grimes. And I really enjoyed Caro Emerald’s performance a few years ago.

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 14:12

Jools likes to showcase new talent too , I have now heard of Lola Young and she is one to watch I think! Sassy and talented.

tttigress · 01/01/2022 15:34

My personal view is the BBC know it is out of date, along with a few other shows like Strictly, but don't really know how to move on to the next thing.

They can't move on to the next thing because it is all happening on YouTube and streaming services which don't really make too many shows that are "fun for the whole family".

tttigress · 01/01/2022 15:38

@Cattenberg

Does anyone else miss Clive James? I used to enjoy his NYE show, admittedly I was quite young then.
I lived Clive James. He seemed to combine being the funniest and cleverest man on TV, with actually being a nice guy :)

@Cocoabutterformula

I loved BBC! Olly Alexander was great, do wonder what the older licence paying viewers made of all the LGTB slant though. I loved it I have to say!
I dont care about the LGTB part (I'm 60) I'm LGTB category myself but I didn't understand the bowl haircut that was a bit weird. Not all older people are bigots you know.

The BBC seem to have forgotten that it's the mums and dads paying the tv licence and we'd quite like some decent telly that isn't aimed at teenagers.

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 15:55

I loved Clive James too , such a nice man. His Sunday might show was must see tv.
I'm old and I love seeing diversity on tv and the LGTB community being represented too!

Abhannmor · 01/01/2022 16:25

Didn't watch it but Irish Twitter exploded today about how Ed Sheeran butchered Raglan Road so guess I dodged a bullet there. Smile

Oldraver · 01/01/2022 16:29

Once upon a time he was refreshing compared the the shite that had been on for years at New Year

He's just fallen into the same staid formulaic trap

BellaChagall · 01/01/2022 16:37

Abhannmor he sang it with a girl called Joy Crookes. She was absolutely awful and although I like Ed Sheehan he didn't do a great job either. He kept looking sideways at her in disbelief.

SirChenjins · 01/01/2022 16:44

I’ve just watched Raglan Toad - jeez, she was spectacularly awful Shock. Who is she?

SirChenjins · 01/01/2022 16:45

Road!

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/01/2022 16:48

DH used to want to watch Jools at NYE and I was indifferent to it. This year we channel flicked - and kept going. Olly Alexander is a good singer, but I find that Pudding Bowl Haircut of his too distracting.

Back in the 80's, there was a sketch show in Scotland called Scotch & Wry, by a comedian called Rikki Fulton. He did a Hogmanay special every year, and I still miss them. I'd much rather have comedy than music.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/01/2022 16:48

yes raglan road was terrible.

Lillyhatesjaz · 01/01/2022 17:03

I can not bare Jools Holland so I watched bbc1 with my DD I am not the target audience but very much enjoyed watching Ollie Alexander and the backing dancers were brilliant.
I am old enough to remember new years eve with Andy Williams that really was awful

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 01/01/2022 17:09

I've never really forgiven Jools Holland after discovering only a few years ago that it wasn't shown live. I genuinely thought all these stars were having a jolly good party together on NYE. I feel lied to and I've never gotten over it!

AnyFucker · 01/01/2022 17:36

What 'sexual predilections'?

Autogynephilia. To me, that is what drag is and I object to being made part of someone else’s fetish without my consent

Others may feel differently

LittleRoundRobin · 01/01/2022 17:46

@LibbyVonTrap YANBU, it's a load of shit, always has been. I hate it. They need to find something new. DH and I just put a Christmas film on at 10pm.

It finished at 11.50pm, and then we stuck the TV on to see the new year in on the news, see the fireworks, hear Big Ben chime etc.

Then we supped our celebratory sherry, had a quick new year kiss/cuddle, (and wished each other Happy New Year,) texted 7 or 8 people and wished them happy new year, then went to bed at 12.30pm.

Valeriekat · 01/01/2022 17:54

Yes he is a rude man with an over-inflated ego.

Mochudubh · 01/01/2022 17:55

They should repeat Scotch and Wry for a new generation.

At least we no longer have to suffer Bill McHugh and his "Happy Hugmunay" shortbread bollocks.

'Olly Alexander is a good singer, but I find that Pudding Bowl Haircut of his too distracting.'

He is average and not good enough to have carried the whole show, though the Pet Shop Boys improved things massively. His little peggy teeth though, why doesn't one of his friends tell him he desperately needs veneers?!

Because he doesn’t need veneers, no one looks good with instagram hun teeth.

Well it looks like he's had half the prep done then not bothered getting them finished. I'm not one for Rylan style massive knashers but little stumps aren't a good look are they.

Of course they don’t, they look exactly like what they are, natural teeth. Not sure why you’re pretending they’re little stumps.
