To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

I like it

Goatsaregreat · 01/01/2022 11:39

We switched between Jules and BBC1. Some of the concerts have been brilliant in past years (even when not my choice of music) but last night's was dire. And as for the dismal drag queens Xmas Sad Even the fireworks were disappointing - drawn out, tedious 'narratives' that obscured what wow factor there was.

Such a missed opportunity.

MilduraS · 01/01/2022 11:41

I quite enjoyed it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I remember DH suggesting we watch it a few years ago and the line up was awful but last night was good. Perhaps expecting not to enjoy it was the trick.

eagerlywaitingfor · 01/01/2022 11:41

DH was out playing with his band thank goodness, so I didn't have to suffer Jools this year. I watched a documentary about Elton John instead, which was great.

Omicrone · 01/01/2022 11:44

FWIW I think Olly Alexander was good in Its a Sin and Stardust gets a lot of radio play but I think he can't be a good guy to bin off his band but keep the name as a solo act.

I was thinking about this last night - they split in March 2021, and I was wondering if its because Olly became much more famous in his own right after Its a Sin. Apparently one of the other guys still plays some live shows though, I think he might have been on the keyboard last night? I like to think he is a good guy as he comes across as so lovely and sweet!

The drag queens were so bad it was just cringe. I really hope drag is on its way out.

FWIW I think Olly Alexander was good in Its a Sin and Stardust gets a lot of radio play but I think he can't be a good guy to bin off his band but keep the name as a solo act. Saw him on Graham Norton wearing some fabulous PJ'S so I'm guessing the wardrobe was worth a watch even if the singing wasn't up to much.

Stardust is not a years and years song. Emre chose to leave as he has a toddler and baby so longer wants to tour, Mikey no longer wants to be part of the writing process so now is solely performing live shows.

zen1 · 01/01/2022 11:46

I like Olly and thought he injected some energy and fun into the evening (agree with the point about the drag queens though; didn’t think they were necessary). Also a fan of the Pet Shop Boys, so watched for them too.

Hootenanny is dull as ditchwater and past its sell-by date. It was okay thirty odd years ago when it was a new concept.

L0uby1 · 01/01/2022 11:47

Utter horseshit!! Time it was put out to pasture, along with JH. Can't stand the man! Same old faces! Was Lenny Henry there as usual?

baggies · 01/01/2022 11:47

Guess I'm in the minority then. I enjoyed it!Smile

Omicrone · 01/01/2022 11:48

Starstruck is the Years and Years song isn't it?

Feelingoood · 01/01/2022 11:49

Yes it used to be so refreshing compared to awful andy Stewart!
N y Eve tv is always crap. And somehow depressing! Surely it’s not that hard for al lot of highly paid tv types to Chuck a few ideas around.
We watched cobra Kai which was brilliant!🥳🥳🥳🥳

HunkyPunk · 01/01/2022 11:50

No, @Leaveitonthefloordrobe it’s definitely not you! Grin

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 11:51

I love hearing him play the ' boogie woogie' piano !

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/01/2022 11:56

Haven’t watched it for ages. Always found it pretty boring TBH.

Roselilly36 · 01/01/2022 11:56

Can’t believe Jools still has the gig, like a never ending story. I would not put up with watching that show every NYE, really unfair.

Sugaris · 01/01/2022 12:02

I’ve never watched it because I turned it on once about 20 years ago and was so surprised and put off by how high his voice is, I switched over immediately. His voice just didn’t match his appearance and I couldn’t watch/listen. Weird and silly of me, I know.

The thought of him rushing around saying he needs to get on with stuff in an arrogant little squeak is very funny though. I’m imagining a self important mouse.😂

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 12:04

I've loved him since the Squeeze days too

kissmelittleass · 01/01/2022 12:06

Dh loves it wanted it on again last night but I can't bloody stand it!! As boring as watching paint dry! So I put the the pre recorded soaps on and after a few minutes of emmerdale he left lol where as I've endured Jules Holland shite for donkeys years!!

iklboo · 01/01/2022 12:08

Could have done without the drag queens though. What is the point of them apart to thrust their sexual predilections in my face ? No thanks.

What 'sexual predilections'?

frogswimming · 01/01/2022 12:11

Yeah every bloody year Jools Holland. They need to shake it up a bit with something new.

ShepherdMoons · 01/01/2022 12:16

It used to be quite good, about 20 years ago. Last night's offering was quite poor. Ruby Turner again, an old video of Lily Allen singing fro 2006 (clearly not enough performers to go round) and the only act worth seeing was Ed Sheeran. Had to wait until 12.30 to see that.

Other side was pretty poor as well. Kylie singing down her nose and Olly Whoosit from Years and Years.

Cattenberg · 01/01/2022 12:17

I was at a relative’s house last night and they were watching this. I didn’t realise it was pre-recorded. That explains why Jools just went by his own watch and seemed remarkably laid-back about timings.

I was sad to miss the Big Ben bongs. We turned over, but it was too late. I don’t think there were many fireworks this year, either.

iklboo · 01/01/2022 12:18

To be honest, we watched Suicide Squad & Doom Patrol up to about 11:55 then switched the fireworks on. Much better NYE.

Cattenberg · 01/01/2022 12:19

Does anyone else miss Clive James? I used to enjoy his NYE show, admittedly I was quite young then.

AstroBunny · 01/01/2022 12:20

What a load of old pony it was

I should always go by Jez from peep show’s advice, “not the Hootenanny. Never the Hootenanny. We're better than that”
