To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

LibbyVonTrap · 01/01/2022 08:30

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

We stopped paying for a TV licence well over a year ago and never watch live tv only Amazon Prime and Netflix. From what I hear we've not missed anything which would have been remotely of interest to us.

Cocoabutterformula · 01/01/2022 12:23

I loved BBC! Olly Alexander was great, do wonder what the older licence paying viewers made of all the LGTB slant though. I loved it I have to say!

It’s ok not to like something, what I don’t understand is the pathological need to have people pile in with like minded hate. You’re on MN which means you have access to an internet enabled device, how difficult would it have been for you to watch what you wanted to watch on said internet enabled device?

Oh and your ‘lighthearted’ disclaimer doesn’t neutralise your negativity and somehow make it amusing.

Again, it’s ok not to like something that other people like but you had options and one of those options is to not be negative for the sake of being negative.

pictish · 01/01/2022 12:28

Don’t worry about it. Click off the thread and participate in something more to your liking.

Jools, is that you? 😆
NoNotMeNoSiree · 01/01/2022 12:31

YANBU, should have been watching BBC like us, much more fun with Olly Alexander, Pet Shop Boys and Kylie Smile

pastypirate · 01/01/2022 12:32

@RuthW

I really enjoyed BBC with Years and Years. Much better than previous years.
Us too it was great! I love Olly Alexander and my heart swelled seeing him perform with not just Kylie but the pet shop boys!! Must have been the holy grail for him! Kids loved it great show
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 01/01/2022 12:33

Jules Holland is absolute shit. So I turned over to bbc 1 and there was some guy singing, he had a horrendous bowl haircut. Who is he? I've never seen him before but will never forget the hair!!!!

Go away Jools! You’re past your sell by date!

Given a choice between Hootenanny and no TV at all, no TV would triumph. Even the word riles and depresses me in equal measure.

If I were Ollie A's management team I'd be advising him very carefully about over-exposure. I find him a breath of fresh air, but TV executives see that as an excuse to crowbar such talent into every show of every size and shape until the viewing public is sick of the sight of them.

Ollie, if you're reading, the minute you're offered The Wheel or similar you'll understand what I'm talking about.

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 12:40

Ahh, I like Olly too but he is everywhere at moment ! Bless him
Years and years have been around a while now , Communion is a great album
Also love the PSB's too , great pop tunes that have stood the test of time !
Love a bit of pop.

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 12:44

There is a bit more diversity on tv generally lately. , only a good thing I think ?
But then I am a live and let live person most of the time anyway , although certain celebs do wind me up of course !
I'm sure that many don't like it though :(

Cocoabutterformula · 01/01/2022 12:44

PSB's are national treasures

twilightermummy · 01/01/2022 12:46

Argh! Didn’t realise it was pre-recorded. How shit is that! Almost feels like, what’s the sodding point?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/01/2022 12:50

“Scottish NYE TV is utter rubbish. It's embarrassing.”

It was good until a few years ago. Phil & Aly WERE Hogmanay, but then they got rid of them, got rid of Jackie Bird, now Only An Excuse has finished for good and it's all just quite desperate now. I gather they had a new head/controller who saw a very popular winning formula and decided that it must therefore be changed. Probably trying to attract a much younger audience who are (usually) out partying and not watching TV anyway.

Oh, Clive James was fantastic - I always got an actual buzz when his NYE programme was about to start, because I knew it was going to be hilarious and really something special.

No idea what has happened to BBC1 (England) in the past few years. Whichever artist they choose, they always seem to massively over-promote them - like an ultra-proud parent desperately trying to get their child a part in the local pantomime, by insisting that the producer will not have ever seen somebody as talented as they are.

I only caught a few minutes of Olly where's your troosers and he seemed.... OK, but nowhere near the amazing, dazzling star that the BBC had bigged him up to be. Alicia Keys the other year was awfully flat, too (although she usually is, even on her recordings).

Maybe they should just get a decent pub singer/group (sorry, Robbie - I said decent) with the sole intention of giving everybody a good old entertaining time, without any delusions of personal stardom or unachievably stratospheric talent.

SirChenjins · 01/01/2022 12:55

Phil & Aly WERE Hogmanay

But not in a good way.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/01/2022 13:01

But not in a good way.

Have to agree to disagree there!

SirChenjins · 01/01/2022 13:07

Definitely have to agree to disagree. Two middle aged men playing an accordion and a fiddle didn’t really scream the best of Scottish New Year entertainment to me.

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 13:13

@Cocoabutterformula

PSB's are national treasures
They really are !
KiloWhat · 01/01/2022 13:16

Worse than Nick Knowles

Aderyn21 · 01/01/2022 13:26

The BBC seem to have forgotten that it's the mums and dads paying the tv licence and we'd quite like some decent telly that isn't aimed at teenagers.
Olly whatsit did okay but it was hardly star studded NY Eve worthy entertainment (although I did miss Pet Shop Boys who I'm sure were fabulous as ever).
Jools Holland's show is an embarrassment

IndigoApple · 01/01/2022 13:42

We channel hopped between best 80s songs, Hootenanny and Scottish Hogmanay. It’s the only way! Also turned over to BBC England to see the PSBs after friend texted.

I’m sure Jools not actually being live was outed (in our house anyway!) when Kylie was ‘performing live’ but also playing at Edinburgh Hogmanay on another channel some years ago.

Cocoabutterformula · 01/01/2022 13:56

Aderyn21

We are mid 50's 'mums and dads' paying the licence and loved it!

anungratefulwretch · 01/01/2022 13:59

I can't stand smug twat JH and his tedious NYE show. It's the same every bloody year.

We watched Yellowjackets on Netflix until 11.30pm and then wandered down to the beach with a bottle of champagne to see the fireworks. Much better!

Aderyn21 · 01/01/2022 14:01

Glad someone did cocoa. I think he did alright but NY telly should be much better than alright. Especially in a year when most people have been discouraged from going out or mixing too much with others.
