To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

LibbyVonTrap · 01/01/2022 08:30

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

I always feel I'm not "cool" or edgy enough to enjoy the Hootenanny.

Bemused at the thought that anyone could think the Hootenanny is either cool or edgy Confused Grin

To those suggesting that having more tvs in the house would facilitate choice - no matter how many tvs you have, NYE tv in the UK is almost uniformly shite. On the basis, I suspect, that they think most people will not be watching tv on NYE, so they don’t need to bother. I think the BBC especially have lost the ability to read the room.

pictish · 01/01/2022 11:06

We didn’t have the telly on. We watched The Matrix with the kids (they’d not seen it before) till 11 then put some music on. We counted the bells down on the computer, cheered and that was that.
NYE themed tv is fundamentally depressing somehow.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/01/2022 11:06

Dm used to watch it every year. It’s not the main reason we’re nc but it didn’t help.

Eyesofdisarray · 01/01/2022 11:09

Can't stand Hootenanny!
🤣 @therarebear!!!
Agree it's a Cringe fest. And Texas??

LouLou198 · 01/01/2022 11:10

My dh is the same!! Last night was particularly awful, dragging out performances from 20 years ago!! I wanted to watch Kylie and Ollie - might see if I can find them on Iplayer.

Caveofthewinds · 01/01/2022 11:12

Even the word 'Hootenanny' pisses me off.

SufferingJet · 01/01/2022 11:13

@MrsLargeEmbodied

it depends who is on, i really enjoyed Future Islands, some years ago, i was flicking between the channels and gave up last night - but some years it is good
I LOVE them and have to begrudgingly concede that I only know about them because of that insufferable little Holland twerp.
the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 11:13

I like it!
New music is featured and he is a fabulous pianist and person.
Very talented.

nineteensixy · 01/01/2022 11:13

@Boofay

And it's filmed in June or July ffs. Why watches a pre-recorded nye show? I've stopped watching it since I found that out.

I was asleep for new year. Best thing imo!

I've always wondered how JH persuaded celebs to spend NYE working rather than being with families/friends enjoying themselves. It's never occurred to me that it wasn't live - duh!
PennyRoyal · 01/01/2022 11:16

(I quite like it)

It was filmed mid December I believe. Clip of Craig David from 2000/2001 was fab - he looked so young, and made me feel old!

SirChenjins · 01/01/2022 11:17

I realised how old I was when our twenty-somethings asked who the man was fronting that band (it was Sharleen Spiteri and Texas). I really think the head of BBC Scotland needs to rethink its commissioning and bring in some younger talent.

PineappleMojito · 01/01/2022 11:17

YANBU, it’s got really dull

ZenNudist · 01/01/2022 11:20

I'm staying with family and they put JH on at midnight. I was tickled by Jools saying "I've been given the signal" acting like it was live when everyone knows it isn't. Then I was aghast that immediately vic reeves was on looking like gandalf singing a song from 1991. I couldn't believe that how they wanted to see in 2022. What a shit show!

I watched Ed sheeran do his loop thing. I like him but think the looping is a vanity. If you're going to pre record stuff do it in advance.

We marvelled at Lulu. Her voice is awful and Shout is a terrible song but her plastic surgeon is a miracle worker.

Then that rag and bone guy came on and we gave up. Snoresville.

FWIW I think Olly Alexander was good in Its a Sin and Stardust gets a lot of radio play but I think he can't be a good guy to bin off his band but keep the name as a solo act. Saw him on Graham Norton wearing some fabulous PJ'S so I'm guessing the wardrobe was worth a watch even if the singing wasn't up to much.

Clymene · 01/01/2022 11:20

It's dreadful and bbc1 wasn't much better with that bloke who looks like he's off to the Crusades in the morning.

SpringRainbow · 01/01/2022 11:20

You’ve all reminded me why we set an alarm for 11.55pm and just watch whatever we fancy (last night we rewatched Hawkeye), and then once the alarm goes off we put on the BBC and keep an eye out whilst we go to the loo/ get drinks/ send new year messages and then we see in the new year and then we put on something else (last night we put on some music).

mscynical · 01/01/2022 11:21

@UglyModernWindows Same here! Visceral dislike exactly, he’s always given me the creeps. Why is he given the platform at every NY??

Not only every NY but it seems to be as the only presenter for artists promoting their albums/overseas artists on the BBC via Later... and on BBC radio.

Maybe it's because he's a white, middle aged man with an aristocratic wife so moves in the 'right' circles...

phishy · 01/01/2022 11:22

YANBU, i thought it was just me 🤣

Hepzibar · 01/01/2022 11:23

YANBU I can't believe they are still trotting this out. It's had it's day.

There was definitely Nothing On The Telly last nite. Considering many people were staying in out of either choice or necessity a better effort should have been made

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 01/01/2022 11:26

@TheWeeDonkey

Thanks for bringing back that memory *@sushigo* 😱

I really wanted to like Ollie but the live performance especially with the Pet Shop Boys showed his shortcomings.

I have no problems with Olly and like several of his songs but the performance with the pet shop boys was a bit embarrassing. Neil Tennent was great, despite seeming to have had his mic turned down.

BBC didn't do a great job this year, we watched the 80s countdown on channel five in the end 🙄

We missed Graham Norton but why they didn't just run that up to midnight with some extra music for more of a party atmosphere, it would have been much better than the offering on 1 or 2.

The hootenanny needs retiring, we need something a bit like that but it is tired, cliquey, and lacking any excitement. It is the same guests over and over these days with Jools and Vic Reeves indulging in their own unfunny in jokes.

EishetChayil · 01/01/2022 11:28

The word "hootenanny" irritates the living fuck out of me.

UltimateFoole · 01/01/2022 11:29

Word to the wise, BBC Alba. That's all you need. Wink

I see your point Grin Maybe I didn't mean cool and edgy. Just reminds me of a group of kids with in-jokes that I'm not party to. And people used to race about it, but I couldn't see it. My inferiority complex always makes me feel like it's me in the wrong Grin
WildRosie · 01/01/2022 11:33

I'm amazed that the programme is still on. The last time I even saw a glimpse of it was New Year's Day 1997 and it was an instant switch-off then. Can the BBC not come up with anything original after all this time ?

ElftonWednesday · 01/01/2022 11:33

Yes, Graham Norton carried on until the countdown would be better. That was actually quite good.

AnyFucker · 01/01/2022 11:34

I thought Olly Alexander was great. He’s not the most talented singer but there is something about him I find appealing, I think because he reminds me of my son.

He was immense in It’s A Sin and ever since he did a documentary about “growing up gay” I have liked him. What he did last night was a very big ask in the cheap studio they use for all the crappy game shows like The Cube etc

Could have done without the drag queens though. What is the point of them apart to thrust their sexual predilections in my face ? No thanks.
