To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

I like Olly Alexander but it was definitely all about him on BBC1. Even the Pet Shop Boys & Kylie were only allowed to perform with him & I would've liked to see them do a few more songs without him really.
Thought the guy on the bridge during the fireworks was very dull as well.
As a 70s Squeeze fan I do like Joel's but not on NYE, boring old format.

ApplesinmyPocket · 01/01/2022 09:19

There used to be a NYE prog we watched every year that was actually FUN, with Irish dancing and a fiddle group (Aly Bain/Boys of the Lough) playing in the New Year as they do in Shetland. I'm going back a good few years though - at least 20!

Nowadays it's utter rubbish isn't it.

MarshmallowFondant · 01/01/2022 09:21

Cannot abide Jools Holland.

Similarly cannot abide the twee Hogmanay-fest they put on telly up here with washed up newsreaders presenting unfunny comedians, children's choirs and some random charity worker from a village nobody's heard of.

LubaLuca · 01/01/2022 09:22

I quite like it! Yes, it might always be Ruby Turner and Gregory Porter, but they're class acts. The Rhythm & Blues Orchestra are so talented too, so you know you'll get something good to have on in the background. Lulu was not pleasant to listen to though, I switched over when she came on.

I didn't like BBC1's offering at all. That lad seemed to be having fun, but he looked and sounded so out of his depth, especially trying to sing with the ever dignified Neil Tennant.

TopTabby · 01/01/2022 09:22

Jools not Joel's!!

ThesecondLEM · 01/01/2022 09:23

My DP is the same, it was so fucking dull, Ed sheeran looked embarrassed. Vic reeves was clearly "medicated" or needed to be. Then duly switched over for the fireworks and DP fucks off outside to watch/listen to the apocalypse that was local peoples fireworks.

Happy New year all

LynetteScavo · 01/01/2022 09:24

It is a bore - I even fell asleep when we went to watch Jools Holland live.

LibbyVonTrap · 01/01/2022 09:25

What was with the Vic Reeves baking tray comment? He said something about rubbing your hands on a baking tray and Jools looked panicked and said “just to add children don’t try this as home” and Vic confirmed that the baking tray shouldn’t be hot?!? I mean, I’d had a drink but I was starting to wonder if I was more pissed than I thought as none of that made any sense.

And yeah the way Ed Sheeran was awkwardly leaned up against the piano in the most unnatural stance ever … Christ get off the telly
@LibbyVonTrap well the half hour or so we watched was all about the guy from Years and Years. Don't know his name. It was basically a Y and y gig with a couple of friends.
Well yes, that's how it was billed. Each year BBC 1 have a different act. One year was Bryan Adams, that was good.
It was literally called 'The Big New Years and Years Party with Kylie and the Pet Shop Boys.'

God yes! DH has dragged me off to stand in the audience twice now. That’s when we met Jools and he was a nob.

I remember us all being herded into the stands like cattle. Liam Gallagher was there once and was gurning away in his parka jacket beside me, his son was sat in front of me looking as bored as I was 😂
We did meet Noel Gallagher at one of these shows though and he was quite nice. Shook DHs hand and made his year bless him. More than what Jools could do who instead, barged past us muttering something about “needing to get on with stuff”

It was something about having magnetic hand and frying pan. I hadn't had a drink and it made no sense, I did wonder if I was drinking if it might have been more amusing!

Leaveitonthefloordrobe · 01/01/2022 09:33

I always feel I'm not "cool" or edgy enough to enjoy the Hootenanny. Just not the cheesy vibe I enjoy I suppose.

MissyB1 · 01/01/2022 09:38

BBC was dreadful too, that awful show off in a dress trying to sing - I was actually embarrassed for him.

We gave up on it all and put Die Hard on!

Lunificent · 01/01/2022 09:39

There’s no excuse for the Hootenanny not to have more guests.
Jim Moir and his wife are his close friends. It just comes across as lazy.
I do like His regular musical guests and his band though.

MyOtherProfile · 01/01/2022 09:42

That may have been how BBC billed it but it was still dull. We only put it on for the countdown but clearly put it on too early.

Oh yeah, the magnetic hands thing … was it supposed to be funny? The whole thing was just cringey and weird!

Can’t stand joules Holland but the years and years bloke is incredibly annoying.
And why did they have to focus on him 2 inches from his face? Literally looking up his nostril? I really didn’t need to get that close.
So many people are watching at 11:30-12 why oh why can’t they have something truly decent and amazing?

tttigress · 01/01/2022 09:45

Yes we watched it and were commenting hold on wasn't that guy on last year, and the year before!!

Jools Holland's show reminds me very much of the late 90s, early 2000s.

@Vegetalienne

Tell your husband you want to watch something else or get a second tv. My friend reckons multiple TVs (and bathrooms) are key to happy relationships. 😬 😂
Seconded 😄

Can't stand Jools Holland, totally banned from my house. Watched the last 27 seconds on BBC, some weird bloke on a bridge reciting something unimaginative and boring 😴

Went back to Netflix

therarebear · 01/01/2022 09:51

I can't watch Jools Holland at all anyway because he looks like the Childcatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - but the Hootenanny is a cheesy cringe fest in any case and I can't cope with it.

KiloWhat · 01/01/2022 09:52

The only bit worth watching on NYE is the fireworks

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/01/2022 09:53

why was vic reeves singing?

DSGR · 01/01/2022 09:53

I love it!!

Well my January goal is to do the spare bedroom out - double bed and a little TV so NYE 2022 should at least be more entertaining 😂
