To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

@FitAt50

BBC One was also appalling last night and was just Olly Alexander singing in a dress for an hour. Even Kylie Minogue and the Drag Race Queens couldn't make it any better.

I completely agree. Both mainstream NYE shows (BBC & Hootenanny) were utter shite. Why can't the UK ever seem to have anything decent to watch. I was so bored last night.

dumphies21 · 01/01/2022 10:36

@LanaDelBoy excellent Peep Show reference, we say the same in here 😂

Dearblossom · 01/01/2022 10:36

@MrsLargeEmbodied

it depends who is on, i really enjoyed Future Islands, some years ago, i was flicking between the channels and gave up last night - but some years it is good
Oh my yesss, that NYE Future Islands performance where he does the crazy dancing, I fell hook line and sinker ha ha. There's a clip on u tube I may of watched an obsessive amount of times, actually, bbl....!
JohnStonesMissus · 01/01/2022 10:37

shite bloody auto correct!

If you only have one telly, try watching something else on tablet/phone - with ear phones if you want to be in the same room - (lots on iPlayer/ITV Hub or the paid tv streaming services if you can afford them).

Feel your pain, went to bed with the laptop to watch the other side.Every year we’re stuck with JH.

LadyGAgain · 01/01/2022 10:37

I agree OP. It's utter shite.

gingercat02 · 01/01/2022 10:38

We both love JH and have been to see him live which is brilliant. The tv show has been going downhill for a while now and last nights was dreadful. All old clips and Ed yawn Sheeran

WeDontTalkAboutBruno · 01/01/2022 10:38

It’s a standing joke in this house that there are two people that have me diving for TV remote because i cannot bear to watch them, Jools Holland and Danny Sebastian from bargain hunt.

MrsMadderRose · 01/01/2022 10:39

I like Edith Bowman but I don’t think she has the right personality for hosting Hogmanay. Bring back Jackie Bird!

delightly · 01/01/2022 10:39

We've watched it every year since 2017 since, what's known as, The Worst Christmas Ever. Our eldest had a sickness bug that started in the early hours of Christmas morning, we had to cancel our 15 guests for that day and sent my baby away to the grandparents on his first Christmas.

Then the baby got it on Hogmanay Hmm We watched Jools while feeling sorry for ourselves until Gregory Porter came on and the baby pulled himself up at the TV unit and started dancing for the first time, to Don't Lose your Steam. The kids have grown up loving Gregory Porter and that is one of their favourite songs.

I love the show although some of the guests last night were, um, not great. But Jools and the orchestra always wow me.

We switch in time for the bells and go back and watch the rest of Jools.

Scottish NYE TV is utter rubbish. It's embarrassing. Bring back the Scottish fiddlers, Scotch & Wry and Only an Excuse!

Nandakanda · 01/01/2022 10:41

JH is unbearable.

There was some lad singing in a skirt on the other side.

ElftonWednesday · 01/01/2022 10:41

I thought some of the musical performances were pretty good, but it doesn't hang together as a programme somehow and especially without the audience.

And Vic Reeves is just awful and quite creepy. Never been a fan of him on his own.

TheGlobesTheThing · 01/01/2022 10:42

There were fireworks?
DH was constantly flicking around the channels 'looking for something actually watchable' so I may have missed them.
I saw a couple of Roman candles on the top of a building in London - was there more than that? Did I miss something?

MrsMadderRose · 01/01/2022 10:42

But the folk band and emeli sande were good (on bbc Hogmanay) and even Texas were compelling to watch though I don’t like them.

SpindleSpangle · 01/01/2022 10:48

The Last Leg on C4 is awful these days as well.

Totally overhyped and overexposed people on TV:

Ed Sheeran - sick of the sight and sound of him
Olly Alexander - ditto
Maisie Adam - her agent must know where the bodies are buried

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/01/2022 10:48

@Dearblossom
i watched the clip too, around 2 am this morning Grin

Omicrone · 01/01/2022 10:53

I really like Olly Alexander and he seemed genuinely chuffed to be doing the show last night, so I didn't mind him at all. It was certainly better than the dull fest that was Alicia Keyes just sat at a piano last year - I quite like her generally, but you would have thought for a year when literally the entire country was going to be at home they could have got in someone a bit more upbeat.

The best year in recent times was Adam Lambert.

The drag queens were absolutely awful. Four mediocre blokes awkwardly lip syncing whilst an actually talented woman does the singing off camera. But it's great entertainment because.....drag queens! Hmm

midnight90 · 01/01/2022 10:53

Totally boring tv show, my ex and his family watched this every year on NYE and I never understood the program myself, I hate his catch phrase Hootanny no idea what that means. The guy himself makes me want to punch him in the face, he should just give it up now.

My now DH (been together for 7years now) last night we just played games and he had a drink or two (im 18+6 weeks) so only had soft drinks but we stayed up till just gone midnight watched a few fireworks and then went to bed nice and quiet (wont be at the end of 2022 :-D)

Happy New year OP and everyone else

tigger1001 · 01/01/2022 10:56

We watched films then put the bbc Hogmanay show on for the bells and watched the rest of that. Did quite enjoy the music on that.

Not a jools Holland fan - find it a bit forced and false.

MeredithGreyishblue · 01/01/2022 10:56

It's a load of pretentious, self indulgent drivel.

MrsToothyBitch · 01/01/2022 10:59

We switched on at about 11:45 to be in time for the countdown & fireworks and enjoyed the Kylie and Pet Shop boys performances more than the Years & Years ones. Olly seems really lovely though. He came across as a sweet boy!

We liked the light show but found the narration quite earnest. Could've done without the Strangled Cat Choir too.

MrsToothyBitch · 01/01/2022 11:01

Used to quite enjoy Hootenanny but can't bear it now! So fake and forced and so bloody repetitive. And the dancer with the clock face mask is creepy! Agree with Pp who said it still feels like the early 00s.

pictish · 01/01/2022 11:02

“Scottish NYE TV is utter rubbish. It's embarrassing.”

Couldn’t agree more. Ugh. Dire dire dire.

UglyModernWindows · 01/01/2022 11:03

@DustyMaiden

I’m glad you say he’s horrible. It gives me some justification for the visceral dislike I have always had of him. It is quite strong.
Same here! Visceral dislike exactly, he’s always given me the creeps. Why is he given the platform at every NY??
