To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

LibbyVonTrap · 01/01/2022 08:30

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

I totally agree. It has had its moments in the past but nobody of any significance ever plays on there nowadays & it's been like that for many years.

I remember watching the manics & pulp at their peak on the show.

Also seeing Jeff Beck play on the show made me buy a guitar & play for about 10 years.

coodawoodashooda · 01/01/2022 09:56

@LanaDelBoy

We have a saying in our house. "Not the Hootenanny, never the Hootenanny!"
That's so funny.
WrappedInRed · 01/01/2022 09:57

Used to love watching this every year but as PPs have said, it’s always the same people (old friends) and I agree since I’ve known it was pre recorded it has made it even worse.

PS Love Jeff Beck.

AutumnAlmanack · 01/01/2022 09:58

I preferred it when we had Scottish dancers and bagpipes, etc. I think the host was Kenneth McKellar (that ages me!).

cherrypie66 · 01/01/2022 09:59

@RuthW

I really enjoyed BBC with Years and Years. Much better than previous years.
We loved it so entertaining
TheWeeDonkey · 01/01/2022 09:59

Bless that lad on BBC, he looked great but he can't sing, the performance reminded me of a 6th form end of year show.

Like PP have said I don't find Jools particularly offensive, just a but boring.

Luckily Queen at Wembley was on Sky, now they knew how to put on a show

AlwaysLatte · 01/01/2022 10:00

We love Jools!

Mouk · 01/01/2022 10:00

I channel hopped and caught a few minutes of it. Yawn fest.

OopsadayZ · 01/01/2022 10:01

Oh it was such a bore fest. I did think the snobby boring BBC was too try hard and have an LGBTQ+ person....so woke. Nope - dull actually as he's rubbish.

DustyMaiden · 01/01/2022 10:02

I’m glad you say he’s horrible. It gives me some justification for the visceral dislike I have always had of him. It is quite strong.

SirChenjins · 01/01/2022 10:05

YANBU - the Hootenanny is one of the worst things about NYE. Who keeps commissioning it??

We had Edith Bowman, who has all the charisma of a dead dog, over on BBC1 Scotland - they wheeled out all the best Scotland has to offer apparently, it was an absolute yawn fest. The lone piper bringing in the New Year was the best bit.

lollipoprainbow · 01/01/2022 10:05

I miss the old days when the tv went live to Big Ben for the countdown that doesn't seem to happen anymore. The music accompanying the fireworks was shit too!

crossstitchingnana · 01/01/2022 10:05

BBC 1 was awful. Why is this Olly suddenly all over the place?? We were saying you need a "favourite" to host something like that. Michael McIntyre for eg or Adele. We only watched to see the fireworks but as my DH said "men in dresses ticks lots of woke boxes."

Riverlee · 01/01/2022 10:08

I really enjoyed the music on the show.

AgnesNaismith · 01/01/2022 10:09

Jools Holland’s NYE show (I refuse to type the word) makes me feel queasy and like I’m in a library and a history lesson combined. It’s a strange feeling and Jools has obvious disdain for his audience, urgh, no.

I loved Years and Years - good as the dc enjoyed it and we could too.

SushiGo · 01/01/2022 10:09

Really? Years & Years are an extremely successful band with new music out and Olly Alexander has won multiple awards this year for his acting in It's a Sin.

It wasn't a strange choice at all. It was a current option for people who didn't want to listen to music from 1964 on BBC2

And anyone saying Olly can't sing has clearly blotted out the memory of the year we got an hour of Robbie Williams 'singing'

PuppyMonkey · 01/01/2022 10:09

You lot missed a treat on Channel 5 - a countdown of the best party songs and then straight onto the best 80s videos, bloody marvellous. We had a great disco in the living room.

Can’t bear the Hootenanny, it makes me depressed the same old acts every year and Jools awkwardly interviewing people and insisting on playing piano.Grin

I am laughing at pp calling him Joules Holland though Grin

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 01/01/2022 10:10

I live localish to Jools and he is an utter dick so for that reason i would never watch him i actually turn the tv off if he pops up on the 1 show. He is an ignorant arrogant arse Angry

Cherryblossoms85 · 01/01/2022 10:11

I did enjoy spotting that the backing band for Supergrass in 1995 still had one of the same guys in it last night though!

lollipoprainbow · 01/01/2022 10:12

It was always Jimmy Shand when I was growing up !!

AgnesNaismith · 01/01/2022 10:12

And I fully support Olly and his clothes - why not?? The more men wearing skirts as actual fashion the better.

When the drag queens came on my 9yo dd asked what they were. I explained they were men dressed as women for entertainment….a long pause followed because funnily enough that’s quite offensive when you see the world from a child’s point of view. Having the contrast between Olly and them made them look a bit odd…and talentless

Squeekyturtle · 01/01/2022 10:12

Does anyone remember when Clive James used to do a years round up - funny family viewing ! Margarita Pragatan was a firm favourite.

Dara O'Brain we need you !

Seymour5 · 01/01/2022 10:12

The musicians in the R&B Orchestra are brilliant. But the ambience of the show is cheesy. I find Gregory Porter quite pretentious, Jim Moir, not funny, but I do like the pipes and drums at NY. We switched channels for the fireworks, but I couldn’t have stood to watch Years and Years.

playinthedarkness · 01/01/2022 10:13

I gave up on nye programs years ago, instead we binged the newest season of cobra Kai, paused it to go stand outside watching the local fireworks at midnight then back to watch another half hour before going to bed. Too many good things to watch rather than JH

Seymour5 · 01/01/2022 10:13

@lollipoprainbow

It was always Jimmy Shand when I was growing up !!
And me! Or Andy Stewart and the White Heather Club.
