To hate DH’s Jools Holland NYE

DH insists on having bloody Jools Holland on every NYE. I never was a fan of him of his shows but we actually met him a few years back and he was rude as fuck which turned me off him completely.

We only have one telly. DH insists we must watch Jools Holland every NYE. I fell asleep last night as the show is so bloody boring! Woke up just in time to watch the fireworks outside and now I’ve realised I missed the London display that would have been on one of the other channels!!

AIBU? (Lighthearted - I’m aware it’s not a massive deal before I get jumped on)

My sis made what i think is a good point. She reckoned that if the gov.t wanted us all to stay home they should have put better stuff on the telly.

UmbilicusProfundus · 01/01/2022 10:14

Those of you sneering at one of the most high profile acts of the year being booked for reasons of ‘wokeness’ may be betraying your prejudice.

ChocolateCakeYum · 01/01/2022 10:16

I always avoid Jools. I have an intense dislike for him. He’s smug and insufferable and walks around with a look of disdain for everyone.

BellaChagall · 01/01/2022 10:17

I normally quite like the Jools Holland show but it was dire last night. The best bits were the flashbacks.

Lulu in glasses so dark I was worried she might fall over. Rag and Bone Man is just dull. A terrible singer called Joy Crookes....she was dire. Even Ed Sheehan looked embarrassed.

Jools randomly shouting Hootenanny like a demented goat.

And then just when I thought it couldn't get any worse we had Vic Reeves murdering a Monkees song. By then I was desperately swigging Baileys from the bottle.

The show format is old, tired and well overdue for replacement. It was once new and alternative - its a parody of that these days. Its not live, everyone knows its recorded in advance and there is no "buzz" of live for new year.

I've also met him, not in the context of being a fan to be snubbed and he was staggeringly and unnecessarily rude.

5foot5 · 01/01/2022 10:19

@TwoLeftSockdWithHoles
NYE is just not the same these days without Andy Stewart singing 'Donald where's your troosers?'

I was about to say that at least it's better than the sort of boring shite they showed when I was a kid. The White Heather Club wasn't it. Groan

Aderyn21 · 01/01/2022 10:20

I won't watch it since I found out it was pre recorded - totally pointless for a NY show.
Not impressed with any of it really - BBC was dire and what was with the ABBA tribute choir? Surely the London celebration should feature British music? Nothing says London quite like a Swedish pop band!

ToastieSnowy · 01/01/2022 10:21

Never been keen on the hootenanny, even less keen on the bloke with the black adder I hairstyle. I thought he’d sing a song or two so kept turning back to catch the next act. Nope. Watched a mix of gogglebox and the 80s countdown until midnight.

I thought the fireworks were cancelled this year so when the bloke on the bridge started I thought that was it and turned it off. Twitter said otherwise so watched them in there instead. What a mix up, 2022 started all confused. It is going to get better right?

TheWeeDonkey · 01/01/2022 10:21

Thanks for bringing back that memory @sushigo 😱

I really wanted to like Ollie but the live performance especially with the Pet Shop Boys showed his shortcomings.

WrappedInRed · 01/01/2022 10:22

@SirChenjins

YANBU - the Hootenanny is one of the worst things about NYE. Who keeps commissioning it??

We had Edith Bowman, who has all the charisma of a dead dog, over on BBC1 Scotland - they wheeled out all the best Scotland has to offer apparently, it was an absolute yawn fest. The lone piper bringing in the New Year was the best bit.

@SirChenjins it's always the token Scottish film eh? 😂 Edith, Sharleen, Emilie.

ForkHandlesplease · 01/01/2022 10:22

DH and I usually watch and enjoy Jools at new year but this year was absolutely awful.

CharityDingle · 01/01/2022 10:23

I watched a bit.
Confirming once more, for myself, that I can't understand why Ed Sheeran is so popular.

TheFive · 01/01/2022 10:26

YANBI.

Jools’ ‘Hootenanny’ just adds to the depressive feeling of doom I get on NYE, to be honest. I’d rather not watch TV at all and just turn it on for the fireworks at midnight bit. (Love staying in on NYE, but watching telly makes me feel like I’m in the Royle family).

I went to the recording of Hootenanny once years ago (in about September I think?!) and it was even worse in the flesh 🤣

TheWeeDonkey · 01/01/2022 10:26

We watched Death to 2021 on Netflix too. That was funny.

Floralnomad · 01/01/2022 10:27

I’ve actually no opinion about Olly Alexander ( never heard him sing)but I can’t abide Kylie so we watched Andre Rieu on Sky Arts - it was very entertaining , even my husband stayed awake which is most unusual .

pictish · 01/01/2022 10:29

I think the fact that it’s pre-recorded put me off. I can’t stand the fabricated jollity of it.
Plus, he always seems to have some, fatuous, self-important relic of old on, who talks shit at length to an apparently enraptured audience before smashing out some racket out on a piano. That bit is always dull as fuck.

JohnStonesMissus · 01/01/2022 10:32

@MarshmallowFondant

Cannot abide Jools Holland.

Similarly cannot abide the twee Hogmanay-fest they put on telly up here with washed up newsreaders presenting unfunny comedians, children's choirs and some random charity worker from a village nobody's heard of.

Same here, I can't stand NYE tv, from 10pm onwards it gets steadily worse, I'd rather have normal TV right up until 23.55, watch fireworks then back to normal telly..the BBC was utter shine last night.
Bollocks2Covid · 01/01/2022 10:32

My Dad watches it religiously every year, but I’m with you OP I think it’s shit. It’s not even filmed live is it? So what’s the bloody point?

mscynical · 01/01/2022 10:33

He's been doing it for over 25 years and I am sick of it. He must know where the BBC bodies are buried Angry

There are many artists/bands who I would love to see but, because I cannot stand his smug face, I never watch. Interesting that when he is on Celebrity Gogglebox he comes across as utterly charmless, unfunny and boring.

Come on BBC shake it up and give some other interesting, younger presenters a chance to work with some of these artists/musicians.

iklboo · 01/01/2022 10:33

DH is upset Hootenanny isn't a child minder with big boobs.

MrsMadderRose · 01/01/2022 10:35

We were switching between Bbc Hogmanay (with some great music), jools and the channel 5 cheesy songs stuff which was great. It was a lot of fun introducing my teen DC to Black Lace and MC Hammer :o

I agree the Jools Holland show is depressing and cheesy. It shouldn’t be - it can have some amazing music and Jools is great when he’s playing songs with guests - he just needs a more relaxed co-host to do interviews and keep it rolling. Also the fact it’s prerecorded on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in October or something always makes it more depressing. And yet it’s a key part of NYE with its unique blend of world-class talent and shonky awkwardness.

However I wouldn’t be standing for a DH who lords it over the TV Angry you should take turns each year or he can watch it on a laptop or iPad.

flowersforbrains · 01/01/2022 10:35

All channels were rubbish last night.

Vic Reeves was doing the embarassing Dad stuff last night. We did have a laugh when he almost tripped over one of the amps.

Will make a note to organise a decent film next year.

Ellie56 · 01/01/2022 10:35

I feel your pain OP. I hate Jools Holland too and my DH insisted on watching it for part of last night too. Olly Alexander on the other channel was much better.

piefacedClique · 01/01/2022 10:36

I hate it! The last time it was any good was when Amy wine house and Lily Allen were on it! About 15 years ago! I cringe for the entire time! My husband bloody loved it and even he’s losing enthusiasm for it
