Getting annoyed at virtue signalling on Facebook local groups

Ignoring the fussing questions everytime a police helicopter is on patrol or fireworks. Where I live it's usually the same thing. Always along the lines of;

" I've got a lot of old tat but want to donate it to charity"
" I brought the homeless guy on the high street a coffee and had a chat with him"
And, this " how many homeless people are there in town? My (photogenic well dressed) twin daughters want to give out Xmas packages" obviously hoping to appear on the local news or "and finally...' on ITV news. Usually the 'ooooh aren't you wonderful' gushing replies. Gives me the raging arsehole.

OP posts:

Loads of “I want to donate a Christmas lunch to someone in need” on ours.
Donate to a food bank didn’t go down well, but then if a good deed isn’t posted on Facebook did it really happen?

Ive asked in the past how they ascertain genuine need and will folk be required to produce a bank statement.

Xmasgetaway · 28/12/2021 23:19

Yes and the ‘I have XYZ things to give away. Contact me if you are needy’.
Ffs………

CoffeeRunner · 28/12/2021 23:19

May I also add the "I haven't sent Christmas cards this year, I have donated the money to the local foodbank/cat rescue etc".

a) why tell anyone? Cards are not obligatory.
b) it's possible to send cards & also give to charity.

Firesidefox · 28/12/2021 23:21

Our NextDoor is like this too. I used to like the occasional one when they popped up rarely but now it's endless and very irritating.

Glitterblue · 28/12/2021 23:23

"Gives me the raging arsehole" 🤣🤣🤣

I'm with you, OP.

ELM8 · 28/12/2021 23:40

Agree 100%.. the kids that have apparently come up with these ideas to help the needy and you can just see the pushy parent behind them hoping to get on the sofa with holly and phil Angry

XenoBitch · 28/12/2021 23:43

Haha, you read my mind. I was thinking of starting the same thread.

CrapDrawer · 28/12/2021 23:47

I get annoyed by similar posts and also posts where someone has found a phone/ bank card/ jewellery and posts on FB to find the owner. What if they’re not on FB. Really annoys me. Take to local police station or send bank card to the bank! Always seems to be someone wanting a bit of glory for doing a good deed but not thinking of the best way to actually get an item back to its owner.

Or a driving license! It has their address on it.. if not a total ballache, go and pop it through their letter box! I found a wallet and went to the person's house and handed it over in person.

Tbf on our local group it usually gets back to the owner within am hour or so (small community) but the rest I absolutely agree with! I bet 90% of the time these people don't actually want to help others, they just have crap they want rid of and too lazy to take it to the tip.

oh

there's a notorious dogging area that's discussed on mine,
some real depraved loonys frequent there who like to flash in broad daylight etc etc

but it's always a, lively debate as to how to deal with it Hmm

The people posting about it must have been there Wink

‘Is there a charity I can volunteer with on Christmas Day?’

Because they don’t need them the other 364 days of the year.

WeDontTalkAboutBruno · 29/12/2021 00:09

We have had a few where Christmas cards have been pushed though incorrectly (I’m in an area affected by delays so assumed it was temp posties new to routes)
Rather than reading the envelope and pushing it through the correct address that’s written on the front and only in the next street we have “does anyone know Mrs Jones?” Followed by someone tagging every poor sod with the same surname in the group.

Just push it though. It’s not fucking difficult is it?

emsmar · 29/12/2021 00:13

Is Tesco open today?

Is the tip open?

What time does the x19 bus come at?

Google it ffs!

The virtue signalling is desperate too.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 29/12/2021 00:13

Heck yes Coffeerunner. That is definitely something that boils my piss.
‘I have chosen to donate to charity rather than send cards this year’. So that’s two quid fifty for the cat rescue then? Great, they’ll live large on that. Crazy virtue signalling that only comes from people who could easily afford to send cards and donate to charity.

QueefofSheena · 29/12/2021 00:14

We have someone on ours who is antivax/anti 5G etc. She was gloating the other week about only 5 children in her DC’s class having the nasal flu immunisation because of her ‘advice’ as a HCP. She’s some sort of quack therapist with bugger all qualifications

Cheersto2022 · 29/12/2021 00:15

Ah the egging on of posters who are clearly only telling a weird one sided version of events or it clearly isn't healthy/abusive drives me barmy.

It isn't a bad thing to support someone by gently raising the possibility of accessing help or gently challenging their ideas. There is a way to do it that isn't offensive/harmful but also not disillusioning someone even more

lightisnotwhite · 29/12/2021 00:16

We have a Lost and Found page that can be shared so dogs, keys and wallets can be reunited. Works well.

However we have a particular woman on the main site who annoys me. Years ago she was the Buying and Selling page moderator. I posted something to which a friend tagged her in and the next person asked for it. I let it go to the person who posted and then DM’d me. The moderator got arsey sent me a post about it going to the “first person” ( which I did) and then threw me off the site leaving me no way of replying to stuff I was selling
During lockdown a different fantastic young lady opened her garage as a free giving site and posted the stuff coming in. No fuss, people could walk up her drive and help themselves. She was incredibly popular and people voluntarily gave her money for her troubles, all of which she gave to charity. She asked for nothing and literally posted the 3k she raised as an end note when she stopped.

First lady in contrast decided to do free giving for charity also. Made a big fuss with lots of posts everyday about what she was doing and suggested donations.. Halfway through the year it then apparently became her daughters site. Cue lots of photo’s of the girl handing cheques over and handshakes every few weeks. Made slightly less then the first woman.

Oh I left that after encountering the thickest bloke in the world who wanted to stand outside Tesco and confront anyone not wearing a mask. He couldn’t get it through his simple little skull that it was none of his bloody business. Odious little twerp.
Smokeahontas · 29/12/2021 00:24

@WeDontTalkAboutBruno Mine is currently awash with posts about a dog shit vigilante. Someone is graffitiing doors, in the dead of night, alleging that the people who live there don’t pick up their dogs shit. Most of them don’t even own a dog.

Babyfg · 29/12/2021 00:29

Ooooh I love our local Facebook group because of the nutters!

My absolute favourite was a mum saying what she could do as her child was been hurt at school by another child. The other mum found out and ripped her apart (in fairness the second mum did make a good case but who knows!)
Apparently the second mum had been complaining to the school about the first child for months for pushing/hitting. The first child would wait at the toilets to trip over the second child etc. The second child has had one incident of hitting between them and the other had 10+.

The first mums reply was I think the best place to discuss this is at school as there's no need to make it public 😳
