Getting annoyed at virtue signalling on Facebook local groups

Ignoring the fussing questions everytime a police helicopter is on patrol or fireworks. Where I live it's usually the same thing. Always along the lines of;

" I've got a lot of old tat but want to donate it to charity"
" I brought the homeless guy on the high street a coffee and had a chat with him"
And, this " how many homeless people are there in town? My (photogenic well dressed) twin daughters want to give out Xmas packages" obviously hoping to appear on the local news or "and finally...' on ITV news. Usually the 'ooooh aren't you wonderful' gushing replies. Gives me the raging arsehole.

Where my friend lives, there is a well known homeless man, who has always aspired to a healthy lifestyle, and discusses this with anyone who stops to listen. Poor man had a Facebook page set up on his behalf, the "Organic (his name) Appreciation page". It has over 2000 members

They could all literally put their money where their mouth is and club together to put few months rent up front. No too practical

@Floogal

I was clumsy describing him as homeless. It appears that he does actually have a tenancy, but for complex reasons, prefers to live on the streets

My point was more about the lack of respect for his privacy

But yes agree with your sentiment

ellyeth · 31/12/2021 19:53

Absolutely agree. It isn't necessary to advertise one's good deeds and, although I hate the liberal and sometimes unfair use of the term "virtue signalling", I tend to think in these sorts of instances it is very appropriate.

Redglitter · 31/12/2021 20:10

The fireworks threads have started 😂🙄

@Lollypop701

Someone has cleared out their cupboards on local fb, trying to giv away fray bentos pies…. No takers so far….
During the first lockdown our local council distributed food packages to vulnerable people. Many people in my area received these. I worked for a charity which supported young people who were living on their own and so were vulnerable in a different way. The charity asked for food donations so I asked my community. What ended up happening was older people didn't like some of the more instant or convenience items in the food packages but they went down a storm with the young people. Particularly, funnily enough, the Fray Bentos pies! So basically I did a food donations swap service between vulnerable old people and vulnerable young people! (Yes I did need to post about it on SM to start with but once I got my flow going we had a collection system that ran like clockwork!)

Sometimes though, it can help inspire others to do good too.
ellyeth · 31/12/2021 21:17

I'm not sure it does inspire other people. If people want to give, they give, but possibly you are right.

sweetbellyhigh · 31/12/2021 21:29

OK I have to share this.

Someone on my local page has just offered up the leftovers of their fish n chips 🤢

User135644 · 31/12/2021 23:25

I'm not on Facebook now but I remember a couple of years ago on one of these local groups you'd always get cranks on there, acting like the secret police.

I remember one particular incident someone posted a picture of someone's face with something like "I've seen this man hanging around the park a few times and he's always alone, you know the type, looks like he might be a paedophile - please BEWARE". Loads of people merrily shared it, working themselves into a frenzy, until someone pointed out that he was the fucking park ranger!

The accuser in question defended themselves with "well how was I supposed to know? He looked very suspicious".

I live in a pretty safe area where crime is relatively low. However, to read our local FB group you’d think it was South Central. I get that I don’t see everything that goes on but the daily reports of “youths on bikes” in “balaclavas” who are “terrorising the area” are rife. However, never seen a single person fitting that description. There also doesn’t seem to be a lot of reporting of actual crime, rather people who’ve been observed looking like they might commit a crime. I’ve concluded some people just have too much time on their hands to worry about this shit.

JustJustWhy · 01/01/2022 09:07

@LittleBearPad. Because I want to. Every year I donate to a personal cause. One year was a local holistic centre that helped my Mum's recovery. This led to some donations from friends who didn't realise they relied upon funding.

That takes off every so often around here too.

'OMG, this place is getting worse, I'm moving etc.' They never specify where the utopia is that they are moving to. And guess what they will be back to comment next time. Hmm

There's an utter rag of a media outlet which publishes rubbish online, mostly completely invented, or lifted off some half arsed story on Facebook.
Someone shared a story from it recently, which didn't make an ounce of sense. In fairness to her, I think she is quite new to the area. I pointed out that that particular media outlet would publish the same shock horror story in a few weeks, claiming it happened in another town.
She subsequently deleted her post.

I live in a really quiet council estate the most you anti social things round here are people smoking weed and the odd person revving their engine. But if you read the groups from the posher part of my town you would think we were all from the cast of shameless. I've even seen a post where someone suggests everyone who lives on this estate should have been drowned at birth. Which was nice.

There is a lot of that here too. An alley leads from the council estate to the private one and they have campaigned for years to get it closed as that's where the 'gangs of youths' food in. They really don't like it when you point out most of those youths live on their precious estate.

One poster was moaning about anti social behaviour from a a house in the street s as few weeks ago and one of the first replies was ‘oh, do you mean the people that rent’. You could almost hear the sneering.

My late father used to say, long before the advent of these groups proved him right, that these people would have signs at the estate entrance to ‘please wear slippers’ if they thought they could get away with it. He had the measure of them.

blessedbethechocolate · 01/01/2022 11:47

@WeDontTalkAboutBruno I didn't realise this existed until I moved here. I came from a bit of a snobby area but after running from dv got a council place here. I was really nervous after hearing all the rumours but honestly it's lovely and the people are so kind and friendly.

I swear some people would like to see council estates burned down. They do forget half the houses are now owned as well.

I am going to use that for a parent from my son's school who regularly sends me WhatsApp's asking me questions about the school that she could find on their website.
icelolly12 · 01/01/2022 12:54

I don't think I've ever found one genuinely useful piece of information on ours. It's a constant stream of "I've found a bank card" just hand it into a branch of that bank then. "I've found a driving licence, anybody know who's it is" ... the bloody address is on it ffs! I think maybe its time to leave it!

Is that a joke post? Use of the word gifting is making it even more nauseous
