Getting annoyed at virtue signalling on Facebook local groups

Ignoring the fussing questions everytime a police helicopter is on patrol or fireworks. Where I live it's usually the same thing. Always along the lines of;

" I've got a lot of old tat but want to donate it to charity"
" I brought the homeless guy on the high street a coffee and had a chat with him"
And, this " how many homeless people are there in town? My (photogenic well dressed) twin daughters want to give out Xmas packages" obviously hoping to appear on the local news or "and finally...' on ITV news. Usually the 'ooooh aren't you wonderful' gushing replies. Gives me the raging arsehole.

@PasstheBucket89

oh

there's a notorious dogging area that's discussed on mine,
some real depraved loonys frequent there who like to flash in broad daylight etc etc

but it's always a, lively debate as to how to deal with it Hmm

Postcode please

@rubyandbel

After a road traffic accident - "does anyone know who the person is? / what happened to them? Hope not too serious? " Eff off and leave it to the emergency services you nosey fecker!
Yeah, they always want to know every detail.
thaegumathteth · 29/12/2021 01:15

Also 'I helped a lady who was injured / faint / lost their purse etc' and just wondered how she is now?

Translation : I'd expected a public thank you on here so I'll tell everyone myself how amazing I am since one has not been forthcoming

Fatarseflanagan09 · 29/12/2021 01:16

We have a group in our village who collect and distribute food parcels to people in the area who are needy or just unfortunate, all well and good and a worthy, but they also post photos on social media of themselves handing out the parcels to the people that rely on them, they don’t seem to realize how fucking embarrassing it must be for people who have to resort to charity, it’s a small village, most people know each other, the last thing you want is your face all over Facebook accepting donated food from some gurning twat playing lady or lord bountiful for a day.

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2021 01:18

YANBU but Mumsnet is no different at times, except those who want a pat on the back try to shoehorn their post into an 'AIBU'? question.

"I saw an old lady crying in the street and I stopped to ask what's wrong. A friend said I should've ignored her and now I'm doubting myself. AIBU?"

Yes, you should've kicked her in the fanny instead 🙄🙄

We had this on our local FB group this year, when someone called an ambulance for someone else and then gave chapter and verse on it on the FB page. There was also much drama about anyone admiring a dog not belonging to them, and a particularly memorable post from a lady about calling the Police as two youths in the street rang her doorbell!

My DH runs a business that only deals with a very specialised, industrial element of a trade. Let's say it's plumbing. He originally trained as a plumber. One woman that I vaguely know from the kids' school has got wind of the fact that DH originally qualified in this trade and literally tags me in any post that anyone makes wanting a tiny plumbing job done in their home such as a new tap putting on. DH's company doesn't do those jobs as a)they don't do domestic work and b) people on the local group usually want those things done for free.

It annoys me so much as she tags me constantly no matter how much I tell her that DH doesn't do those types of jobs.

Mine's full of cats being accosted for doing cat things and the local six dinners Sid and his fat arse with the crazy cat ladies desperately hoping theyre strays so they can steal them. It's pathetic.

ShaneTheThird · 29/12/2021 01:29

Hahha yes op! My local free cycle pages are full of them! "I have this nearly brand new top of the range toy and my child has selflessly decided they want to donate it to someone extremely in need who will have no presents at all for Christmas. Please only ask to be considered if you know someone with nothing."

Jog on. Whoever gives the best sob story is an Oscar worthy liar Grin

Yep, and then lots of comments about how "cats choose their owners" and similar crap.
Slowfoxfast · 29/12/2021 01:34

My Next Door is full of people claiming that a cat seen in their garden must be lost/starving/injured and then trying to catch them to take them to the local cat shelter. Usually accompanied by a picture of a perfectly healthy looking cat and no understanding that cats can and will roam their area and if you feed them they will eat the food just because it's offered not because they are starving. Don't feed cats that aren't your own, people.

The other one that drives me mad is the postman has delivered a letter meant for number 42 to their house and does anyone know them. Just walk to No 42 and stick it through their letter box like anyone else would.

Nobody mentioned the ‘thanks to Al at X taxi firm for the free ride home …’

Thanks to June for opening up ballon shop during lockdown and saved DD’s birthday’

Thanks to Mark at large coffee chain for not charging us for the extra coffee …’

All destined to get people into trouble at work!!! No brains at all.

Bouncer500 · 29/12/2021 01:40

Yes, someone on my fb recently put up 'my wonderful and blessed son has so many toys he has kindly decided to give some excess ones he doesn't use any more to a less fortunate child. Please contact me if you are unable to give your child much at Christmas and you can have them for free. I really want them to go to a needy child. '
Fuck off.

tcjotm · 29/12/2021 01:43

@Xmasgetaway

Yes and the ‘I have XYZ things to give away. Contact me if you are needy’. Ffs………
Exactly, let’s be realistic, they just can’t be arsed going to the charity shop/tip.

When I’m decluttering stuff I don’t particularly care if it goes to a deprived orphan or a rich spoiled 40 year old living in his parents home. I just want someone to take it and use it because I don’t want it anymore!

UnRavellingFast · 29/12/2021 01:44

I came off FB a while ago bc it’s vitriolic bollocks. Life much better without it.

To be fair, 99% of taxi drivers are self employed, even if they work as part of a taxi firm. They just pay for the jobs the company sends through to them. It's usually their own vehicle.
immersivereader · 29/12/2021 01:51

I know. Cue SIL, pictured packaging up food for 'our aged parents, who need help'.

Yawn.

ShaneTheThird · 29/12/2021 01:52

Oh there was murder on my local lost and found page and people went mad at me but praised the woman in question.

Basically she found a mobile/wallet in the supermarket and instead of taking it to customer service or security she decided to take it home. She then looked up the name on Facebook. Guy didn't have Facebook eventually he managed to make contact via the phone and he was really angry that she had taken it from the shop as he must have called the shop to be told it hadn't been handed in. He then had to make a trip out of his way to collect it from her.

Everyone was calling him selfish and disgusting and telling the woman to damage his phone etc. I told her she was wrong for stealing someone's property from shop premises when customer service is literally right by the door and she made him go to her for it. Apparently I'm also a selfish cunt and everyone hoped I lost my stuff and had it never returned to me Confused

ghostmouse · 29/12/2021 01:53

Bank cards that get posted on our local fb pages do pretty much find their way back to the owner pretty quickly. It’s a good way of finding someone. Even if that person isn’t on fb chances are someone else will know that person anyway.

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2021 01:56

Someone offered a beautifully decorated Xmas tree in my local group yesterday, but said in uppercase letters "PLEASE NOTE DECORATIONS AND LIGHTS ARE NOT INCLUDED!"

First reply was, "So you want someone to take your old shit away for nothing?" 🤣🤣

Kona84 · 29/12/2021 02:02

My Nextdoor community is in uproar after a lady who was begging for toys/ books for her 3 autistic children as she could not afford to buy them any for Christmas, then came back on 2 days after Christmas advertising 2 puppies for sale that her child wasn’t getting along with advising she had spent over £1000 on the puppies.
The community felt duped- I’ve just been laughing as no one ever asked her why times were hard and she couldn’t afford presents.
If they had she may have told them about the puppies.
Apparently one of the people who donated says she has as a big house and fancy car.
The community have now vowed not to help any more begging posts

whereislittleroo · 29/12/2021 02:41

Haha. I feel like a cynical grump but I 100% agree. Just do the good deed. No need to advertise- in fact doing so just proves to me that it's about getting the cudos, not about genuinely caring.
