Getting annoyed at virtue signalling on Facebook local groups

Ignoring the fussing questions everytime a police helicopter is on patrol or fireworks. Where I live it's usually the same thing. Always along the lines of;

" I've got a lot of old tat but want to donate it to charity"
" I brought the homeless guy on the high street a coffee and had a chat with him"
And, this " how many homeless people are there in town? My (photogenic well dressed) twin daughters want to give out Xmas packages" obviously hoping to appear on the local news or "and finally...' on ITV news. Usually the 'ooooh aren't you wonderful' gushing replies. Gives me the raging arsehole.

Is that a joke post? Use of the word gifting is making it even more nauseous [/quote]
I wish!

And yes, the word gifting bothers me more than anything else in the post 😂

@cobblers123

The air ambulance has just passed over the top of my house , FB will be full of people asking what's happening, hope everyone's OK in a matter of minutes I expect...Hmm
YY to the “I hope everyone’s ok” posts - it’s an ambulance, I suspect ‘everyone’ is not ok, why not just say what you mean and put “I’m a nosey fucker can anyone tell me exactly what’s happening”
lightisnotwhite · 02/01/2022 10:34

@SafeMove I think Facebook is fine to explain to people that you aren’t sending cards especially as postage is so expensive.
However I don’t see why people need to advertise the (unspecified) donation to charity. The two things aren’t connected. You send cards to show people you are thinking of them not because each card donates 10p to a shelter or whatever.

It all kicked off on ours today due to some busybody photographing kids and publicly posting them as "yobs destroying the park". The kids were actually doing a volunteer project to improve the park for all and fully supported by the LA and youth project.

It's all turned really quite nasty

@LindaEllen

I think people online are just a bit nuts in general. We sold something on marketplace (and it wasn't something for 50p haha it was a console) and the woman knocked on the wrong house first - next door but one to us. Apparently she had a 'terrifying encounter' with their dog (it does bark loudly to be fair) - but when she got home, she'd taken a photo of our door, and put a post on the town's Facebook page saying don't buy anything from x and y (our full names) at xxxxx (our full address) because their dog bit me and needs putting down.

She knocked at THE WRONG DOOR so it wasn't our dog.
It didn't bite her, just barked.
How fucking dare she post photos of our house and give our details.

We had so many comments on the post slagging us off, saying call the police, agreeing that our dog (which we don't bloody have) needs to be put down. It took a ridiculous about of time to get the group admins to take it down, and they wouldn't allow us to put a clarification post up.

It was shit.

My condolences, @LindaEllen, We have these posters here. Why do the admin allow these people making slanderous posts?
LouiseLaChain · 02/01/2022 20:16

Photos of them dropping a cheap arse cake into th hospital to cheer 3000 staff members up. Photos of the six shepherds pies they're dropping at the fire station. Selfie with the homeless man they just bought a coffee for.

Fuck me.

@AnyoneForFondue

I live in a pretty safe area where crime is relatively low. However, to read our local FB group you’d think it was South Central. I get that I don’t see everything that goes on but the daily reports of “youths on bikes” in “balaclavas” who are “terrorising the area” are rife. However, never seen a single person fitting that description. There also doesn’t seem to be a lot of reporting of actual crime, rather people who’ve been observed looking like they might commit a crime. I’ve concluded some people just have too much time on their hands to worry about this shit.
Ours is similar, it gives a really interesting insight into a certain segment of human mentality. I swear that some people have a deep inbuilt need to feel under attack and besieged by immoral antisocial people. And if they're not they will fucking well make it up, and fantasise that they are!

This is the same sort of person who reads the Daily Mail, tuts all the way through about "what is the world coming to", "whatever next", but then buys it tomorrow with delight to read more of the same.

Boogaloony · 02/01/2022 21:54

We have a local council/development group for our small but very poor town and the entire populace (420 people) of the group was SCANDALISED to discover that somebody had curled out a turd on one of the local nobhead/gammon/big man's crappy old Mercedes. The car owner took photos of it from all angles, shared photos of the foot prints on the bonnet (and ruler for scale) and actually demanded the culprit come forward for their own safety (?) as the poo was now on ice and would be fully examined for dna. Then actually asked if anybody recognised the turd and if so they could come forward anonymously 😂🤷🏼‍♀️.

It was the highlight of my October, it really was.

@WeDontTalkAboutBruno

Our Next Door currently has an extremely irate woman demanding to know who signed her up for these intrusive emails and that they should stop them immediately! She's very angry. I really want to tell her that the person she should be directing her ire is herself but I might let her rant a bit longer 😂
I think we may be on the same ND, caps on for every post?Grin
SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/01/2022 12:58

@sweetbellyhigh

OK I have to share this.

Someone on my local page has just offered up the leftovers of their fish n chips 🤢

"Won't anyone think of the seagulls!"
Hyenaormeercat · 03/01/2022 13:24

We get the 'white van driving slowly up and down the road, looking in driveways, be careful peeps' posts...yes Kevin and chelle that'll be the Amazon delivery driver

CopperLily · 03/01/2022 20:45

I'm no longer on Next Door as it's terrible. There was a post recently that was a screenshot of something that the police had released asking if there were any known relatives of Mary Jones of 51 Any Street as she'd sadly passed away. Second post was "anyone know what's happening with her house?". Loads of people piled in calling him a heartless bastard but he really didn't see the problem as he was looking to buy a cheap house.

xmaswiththeinlaws · 04/01/2022 23:42

Those people saying hand in lost property to the Police, where we live apparently the Police won't accept lost property so the best option is Facebook (unless there is an address listed), it certainly seems quicker.

CharityDingle · 05/01/2022 00:02

Not a virtue signalling one, but on a book club page...

'I'm reading such and such, finding it very boring, should I continue?' Dunno.

'Recommendations for my 99 year old mother/ ten year old son/ whatever' - well at least give us an idea of what sort of stuff they currently read?

AquaFaba · 05/01/2022 06:59

We live in the countryside and have a public footpath crossing our land. I am forever being slated on the local Facebook by a small group of locals who complain that they can't climb over the fence into the area marked as private land. It's very tedious, especially as the footpath is really well maintained by us at our expense.
