Getting annoyed at virtue signalling on Facebook local groups

Ignoring the fussing questions everytime a police helicopter is on patrol or fireworks. Where I live it's usually the same thing. Always along the lines of;

" I've got a lot of old tat but want to donate it to charity"
" I brought the homeless guy on the high street a coffee and had a chat with him"
And, this " how many homeless people are there in town? My (photogenic well dressed) twin daughters want to give out Xmas packages" obviously hoping to appear on the local news or "and finally...' on ITV news. Usually the 'ooooh aren't you wonderful' gushing replies. Gives me the raging arsehole.

OP posts:

I have to admit I find our local fb group quite helpful most of the time but occassionally (although less so recently) you get passive aggressive rants about parking/driving unsociably/or having a minor prang in waitrose carpark.
They always start ..."to the person who......"
...as if the offending person us going to comment or apologiseHmm

Offmyfence · 29/12/2021 08:27

We had one (I got banned from it Grin) the witch running it was a self appointed vigilante for fireworks, dog shit, anything she didn't like.

She suggested we got cameras fitted at the e tea ceremony to the estate, to see who was coming in and out. She of course would monitor this. No thanks, if I want my illicit lover visiting me at 3 in the morning. I don't want you monitoring it.

starfishofbethlehem · 29/12/2021 08:27

@ghostmouse

Bank cards that get posted on our local fb pages do pretty much find their way back to the owner pretty quickly. It’s a good way of finding someone. Even if that person isn’t on fb chances are someone else will know that person anyway.
If I lost my bank card my first thought would be to ring the bank to get it cancelled. If someone found it I wouldn't care about going round to get it back!
StrapOnSallyChasedMeDownTheAli · 29/12/2021 08:29

One of the reasons I deleted Face ache.

A couple of years ago a 'friend' gushed with pride all over Faceache that her 3yo DD wanted to donate all of her Christmas present money to charity, about £200 in total that were a collection of gifts from friends and family. The money was donated and the obligatory photos everywhere.

It just felt, off...I'm not really sure why, it seemed a bit exploitative of their child, and giving away something that was meant for her. £200 is a lot of money for a few likes and gushy replies, but I guess when the money wasn't yours in the first place...🤷‍♀️

AngelinaFibres · 29/12/2021 08:34

@Glitterblue

"Gives me the raging arsehole" 🤣🤣🤣

I'm with you, OP.

We had lots of " I've got so much Christmas food leftover from Christmas day. Who would like a plate of food. " Cue a million messages of "Oh hun you are so thoughtful/kind / amazing" Bleurch

If you want a real laugh, download & join NextDoor.
Hihihihi. Yes.

The "fur baby" posts are particularly good.

I'm so selfless, here, have a plate of leftover salmonella.

@Janeisalion

Ah I can go one better than that OP.

We have a Transwomen who uses our local Facebook page as a personal blog. They are autistic, tried killing himself last year by lying in the road and waiting to be run over - some poor soul spotted them just before the wheels went over them ( which would have been fucking traumatic for the driver)

They have learning disabilities and mental health issues, lives in a one bed flat and has SS help. I know all this as they posts about it frequently.I would say they are about 40 but some times filters the pictures to make themselves look like a 15 year old girl. They are clearly a very unwell person.

They wears their hair in pig tails and wears gaudy make up and posts pictures in skimpy outfits. There is always around 50 - 80 women saying.

'you go girl'
'what a babe'
'living your best life
'Gorgeous hun'
'all women xxx'
'fuck the haterzz'
ect ect.....

I know this person causes so much upset and trouble for their family behind the scenes because they are not well yet because people are so eager to be 'woke' or virtue signal' they continue this egg on this person and encourage them.

Maybe they are just trying to support somebody with mental illness

My sister in law changed her profile picture to the French flag after the Bataclan shootings . She has literally never left the small market town she was born In but for a week she was practically French and a total flaming grief thief. She reeeeeeally felt their pain.; mainly so her Facebook friends could all say "Oh hun you are so amazing". After a couple of weeks she was bitching and moaning on the same Facebook page that she couldn't change "the bloody flag picture" and could someone tell her how to. Thick as mince.

macon · 29/12/2021 08:44

@Thewiseoneincognito

I have one on FB whose kids are constantly ill, she has 3 and almost daily it’s X is having a duvet day today high temperature, Y is at A&E waiting been here for 4 hours, Z is in bed hasn’t eaten for 3 days. Often describing sensitive inappropriate details about the symptoms to.

She’s also an MLM so the comments are always filled with a mix of up lines, down lines, sidelines, friends and family of ‘awww hugzxxxx’ ‘hope lil mans betta soon’

It intrigues me to the point that I can’t unfriend her because it’s a never ending saga, but still infuriating/ very weird.

I've got one of these, too. She posts endlessly about her children's "health conditions" in needless and extremely inappropriate detail. The children are all teenagers. I am surprised they haven't died of embarrassment.
starfishofbethlehem · 29/12/2021 08:44

During first lockdown people were putting boxes if unwanted books kids toys outside their homes. Unfortunately there were a lot of people who did not get the message about the unwritten etiquette surrounding these. Cue lots of rants about people taking something and not leaving something in return, and heaven help anyone who was spotted removing more than one item and even, shock horror, taking the tatty cardboard box away as well.

They took over a local bench as a book swap site. Never mind that there are elderly or disabled people who might need to actually sit on it!!

I was told off by a friend for not changing my profile pic to “help” France/Manchester/other place where white people got bombed. I pointed out it wouldn’t help the people who actually needed it and what about the other places where bombings happen and people are dying on a daily basis. You funnily enough don’t see people changing their profiles with the Afghanistan flag re taliban take overs?
EnjoyingTheSilence · 29/12/2021 09:05

I lost some keys a few years ago, through the power of Facebook I was out in touch with someone who’d found the keys. But the bloody idiot didn’t hand them in to the pub or restaurant nearby or even take them home. No she left them in a fucking wall so of course they were gone by the time I’d got there.

I would have changed the locks anyway but there were a couple of key rings that were very special to me that I was more upset about.

Whitefire · 29/12/2021 09:05

When I’m decluttering stuff I don’t particularly care if it goes to a deprived orphan or a rich spoiled 40 year old living in his parents home. I just want someone to take it and use it because I don’t want it anymore!

I'm on a few local free pages, the one page is busy but is very much only those in absolute dire straits should have anything, as it is busy I do often use it to give stuff away, but it annoys me that I am made to feel that I shouldn't ask for anything but yet they will happily accept my stuff.

flowersforbrains · 29/12/2021 09:08

I was on Nextdoor for a few weeks.

There are a lot of morons on there........ Confused

TrickyD · 29/12/2021 09:09

When I read the OP’s post, what with the helicopter and fireworks, I was going to ask if she lived in a town beginning with B.
Then I read all the other posts and realised FB and Next Door are the same everywhere.
(The helicopter was a bit of a pain here last night)

Someone left their Christmas presents on a train platform. Someone else found them. Facebook reunited them. The local news paper that's not even on the same area (Manchester
Evening news when the area is in Derbyshire) published it. Slow news days clearly!

Lots of posts about Covid and how it's made local businesses close and how 'Covid has reached our village' Hmm

NeedAHoliday2021 · 29/12/2021 09:16

A few times a year we have claims about deliberate dog poisonings in one of our country parks saying dog died/very ill and very warned they’ve seen this a lot recently. Dh’s job means he’s responsible for these areas so he asks on the thread for the name of the vet. Often they refuse to say or do but it’s always “my friend’s neighbours dog”, never their own dog. He calls round all the local vets and they all say “nope, not seen that”. It’s the same people making the claim - attention seeking scaremongering!

It developed into kidnapping in the parks with photos of “gangs” of foreigners speaking Romanian and they were apparently “clearly planning how to kidnap my dc”… so the parents walked up into the top fields (away from the busy play park and cafe) and were followed. The fact that is a nice walk and the guys were all cleaners at the local hospital where staff V were encouraged to meet outside re covid was annoying facts that got in the way of the kidnapping gang story that’s much more interesting!

LittleBearPad · 29/12/2021 09:17

Can I add local WhatsApp groups too….

NeedAHoliday2021 · 29/12/2021 09:18

Oh and the helicopter ones! We live in a town that has an airfield in the middle where they manufacture helicopters! They do night flights twice a fucking year and post info on their fb page.

Dontletthemuggglesgetyoudown · 29/12/2021 09:20

Previous place I lived had hundreds of posts about how they want a bypass and simultaneously don't want to pay the clean air charge of Manchester. Plus loads of posts between Christmas and new year about how awful the parking is on the road around the local national trust house and how there will be an accident. There was an accident recently and someone died, but the only posts were about how awful the traffic was.

They also had a massive issue about an apple core being thrown out of a car, 100s of posts, comments and memes about it and people got banned. It caused a huge issue 😂

MakingTheBestOfIt · 29/12/2021 09:20

I wonder if I’m on the same FB group as @TequilaStories. Our community has just installed a lovely little book shed outside the village hall. 50% smug ‘aren’t we great’ posts and selfies of people donating and exchanging books, 50% ‘I saw a local teenager in a hoodie/van with forrin number plates/person of possible lower social economic status near it, should we review the CCTV?’

Deviating from the thread a bit - a quick by-the-by on real Christmas trees: Providing they are locally sourced and later composted, they are likely to have a far lower carbon footprint than artificial trees. They’re grown as a crop and take up to 10 years to reach full size then, being a crop, are replaced with new saplings as and when they are felled to ensure a continual supply. These are trees that wouldn’t exist in the first place were it not for the Christmas tree trade. All very sustainable.
