To think the Guardian is a joke re: JK Rowling?

So, the Guardian was running a 'person of the year' poll, and I voted for JK Rowling for her bravery in standing up to the extremist wing of the trans lobby.

I went to have a look to see when the results were out, and they've deactivated the poll! According to Twitter, it's because JK Rowling was the out and out winner.

If this is the case, this is PATHETIC.

Guardian publish a selection of responses on "Person of the Year" - and JKR is included! www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/30/guardian-readers-nominate-their-person-of-the-year

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 30/12/2021 19:23

She’s definitely on the list in the article below. Bit embarrassing for many PPs isn’t it?

Ahahaahahah

That's fucking hilarious.

gobbynorthernbird · 30/12/2021 20:05

Superb

Gumbomambo · 30/12/2021 20:14

Good for you guardian and JKR!

Waitwhat23 · 30/12/2021 20:21

That's brilliant news. I particularly like that the submission they quoted specifically mentions how supportive she is of women's rights and of the backlash she has received -

'JK Rowling. Superb writer and it’s her way of writing that has/still does, encourage children to read. Despite having experienced domestic abuse in her personal life, she uses her experiences and voice to centre women and children so that a wide audience is aware of the vulnerabilities children and women can face in today’s society. She donates to charities so is aware of her hard earned position and wants to give back to those in need. She is very inspiring for women and is supportive of women’s rights, despite people trying to drag her down. Michelle, 45, Wiltshire'

Thing is, as much as you recognise her contribution to childrens books, those books aren't exactly new.

Compare that to recent contributions of Greta and frontline workers ....

Books dont have to be new for them to have a profound and continuing effect on those they were written for. And actually, if you're going to award people for the effect they have, it really should be those who continue to have an impact year on year.

But that's all moot since this isnt about her writing. Lots of people wrote in about her due to her contribution to the debate on sex based rights.

Waitwhat23 · 30/12/2021 21:10

It may be more to do with her huge charitable donations over the last couple of years to charities dealing with the covid 19 crisis, her involvement in the charities Lumos and Volent, the latter of which is providing funding to organisations affected by the covid 19 crisis, and her stauch defence of women's rights in the face of sustained abuse and threats.

Can we start polls on how many PPs change their votes from YANBU to YABU now it’s confirmed this thread was complete fake news and for the OP to request the thread’s taken down as it’s too identifying or some such bollocks to distance themselves from it?

yellowtwo · 30/12/2021 22:48

Here is the outcome of the, not a poll but kindof a poll!

And in a sign of the ongoing debate over gender issues, many readers also nominated the author JK Rowling.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 22:57

Wasn't a poll.

They didn't take it off because JK won.

Some posters frothing over nothing.

Great she got so many nominations

Lots of great people in the article

yellowtwo · 30/12/2021 23:26

JohnHuffam1812

She got a mention and they said many people nominated her, would be great if they would do a tally of nominations, but even so, great to see her listed.

Publishing a tally would be silly because it’s only JK Rowling’s fans that appeared to mistake this for being a vote, and campaigned over social media.

Rhannion · 30/12/2021 23:51

I’ll say it again, I can’t wait for JK to be made a dame. I’m amazed she isn’t already.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 23:53

But they didn't do a tally of nominations it was a readers contribution thing.

It wasn't supposed to select an over all person of the year.

Its strange how this has gone from the Guardian doing a poll (they didn't) and pulling it because JK Rowling was winning (they didn't) to requesting that they turn it into a poll.

In the end the Guardian can't win

Gumbomambo · 31/12/2021 00:27

They made a form and asked you to nominate your person of the year and your reasons. There were some fantastic people who were mentioned in it but the very fact they mentioned JKR was astounding to me. She has been person non grata for a considerable time and unfortunately just the mere mention of her in a positive light brings on a maelstrom of vitriol. So well done the guardian for having the balls to mention her at all.

She should be in the House of Lords.

I am a simple person. If a national newspaper asks me to nominate my person of the year on a special form on their own website, with reasons, I see that as very akin to a poll. Of course things like this are very easily manipulated, so I can see why they haven't said how many nominations each person got.

Am absolutely delighted that The Guardian still has enough integrity to include JKR in the article. I bet some of their US staff are very upset.

JohnHuffam1812 · 31/12/2021 09:53

It wasn't a poll. It was clear.

Absolutely agree
