To hate the matching PJs trend

Alysskea · 28/12/2021 10:46

Every post on my social media and messages from friends has featured an entire family, usually of primarily grown adults, wearing matching Christmas pyjamas.

Where did this come from???? Why is it suddenly a thing??? Why do we all have to see the pictures?

OP posts:

All done for SM. Look at us in our matching PJs! We're such a perfect, happy family!

Darbs76 · 28/12/2021 23:06

It’s from the same place as the Elf on the shelf, the Christmas Eve boxes and all the other things added to a mums list of stuff to do before Christmas. I didn’t buy into any of it, and sorry to say I think adults in matching PJ’s to their kids look ridiculous (but each to their own).

Darbs76 · 28/12/2021 23:07

I saw something on FB end of November saying ‘here comes the matching PJ posts from those who have been having an affair all year’ - as long as all looks ok on Facebook though

clpsmum · 28/12/2021 23:19

We did it but I didn't post pictures. I mainly did it to piss my grump teen dc off tbh.

If you don't like it don't do it

LagunaBubbles · 28/12/2021 23:22

People can post pictures of anything they like on their own social media even if it does piss some of Mumsnet off.

CallMeNutribullet · 28/12/2021 23:22

Me, DD and the dog all had our matching pj's on this year. DD loved it and I don't care if others don't like it.

Xmasbaby11 · 28/12/2021 23:26

No inclination to do it myself but I think it's cute and hilarious. The only Facebook friend who does it moved to the US a couple of years ago.

Gloriagayn · 28/12/2021 23:28

Every post on SM and every message you get? I think you need to change your friends if this is all you see.

RobinPenguins · 28/12/2021 23:32

I don’t really get the wasteful thing. They’re pyjamas, you don’t wear them in public so you can wear them all year round whatever the design on them, unlike, say, Christmas jumpers where people would think you were mental if you had one on in September. But I don’t see the vitriol directed towards Christmas jumpers.

Basically, it seems like a load of you think matching pyjamas is common, you just don’t want to say that so you’re dressing it up as concern for the environment (while you drive your kids to school in an SUV and wash all your towels after every use).

sweetkitty · 28/12/2021 23:46

I’m still wondering how people get their teenagers to participate - my four DC would rather die than wear matching pyjamas nevermind Christmas pyjamas. They get new non Christmas ones and I’m under strict instructions no Facebook photos.

mightbealittlebitmad · 29/12/2021 00:01

I would love to get my kids to wear matching pyjamas because they would look so cute and I would definitely upload it to social media because of the cuteness factor.

Sadly the 6 year old refuses to wear anything to bed and won't entertain the idea of pyjamas.

If I posted a picture of me and my husband in matching pyjamas people would definitely be wondering what was up, he very rarely appears in my posts let alone gushy stuff.

That being said people do what they want to do and they post it for people to see. I just roll my eyes if it's something obviously attention seeking. Someone posted a picture of them, their boyfriend and dog all in matching pyjamas, I don't know them well enough to think it's all fake so I thought oh cute and went about my day.

Anybody that knows me knows how frustrating I find my kids but I will still post the good times (and some of the bad too!) because we've had a (mostly!) nice time and it's nice to share. I'm not fake on my social media but even I would be more likely to upload a post showing the fun outing you had rather than the argument because someone was misbehaving, it's just normal.

IWantMoreStationery · 29/12/2021 00:27

@DroopyClematis

I just don't understand why people want to spend all day in their pyjamas . Stinky crotches and armpits all round and all food spills get taken back to bed.!
You sound like a right minger. Most people wear clean pyjamas. I wear pants & deodorant and snack without spillage.
maddy68 · 29/12/2021 00:30

I find it so hillarious. Grown adults wearing marching PJ's with their kids for photos 🤣. So utterly depressing trying to represent the perfect family. (my arse )

IWantMoreStationery · 29/12/2021 00:31

Jealous people everywhere.

onanotherday · 29/12/2021 00:47

Yes tacky.. but if you like it fill your boots...but don't for a minute think others will.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 29/12/2021 00:55

we have done Christmas Eve boxes for about 15yrs now, the "elves" drop it off and includes a note with a strong reminder to be in bed nice and early for Santa, marshmallows and sprinkles for hot cocoa, a Christmas story book, (used to also have a naff Christmas dvd before the invention of Netflix etc), lavender bath bombs/bubble bath/shower steamers to help the kids get sleepy, and yes, the dreaded matching Christmas pjs.

All of these things I'd be buying anyway, but it just helps to build the excitement of Christmas Eve, while settling the youngest littlies down well for the night.

My eldest (16&17), love it just as much if not more than the youngest two and we all have a good giggle about how funny/silly we all look matching. (In fact the "elves" were a bit late with the box this year and my 16yo pulled me aside and whispered sadly "are we not doing the jammies box this year mum?" He was visibly relieved when I reassured him that the elves were just running late having come off nightshift that morning 🤣)

Yes we take pictures, I think I've maybe put them on SM about 4 yrs of the 15. We wear the pjs year round, and with 4 boys things are definitely handed down.

Nothing cheap or nasty about it, if people don't like it, meh 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Now what is nasty, is people like @Yerroblemom1923 using classist slurs like "chavvy", now that(!) does make me shudder with second hand embarrassment for someone who is so unashamedly rude and prejudiced. Not families having fun and making nice memories to look back on in years to come.

scarpa · 29/12/2021 02:10

I agree with you OP. Instant mute on social media (see also: any kind of professional photoshoot where newborn babies are posed with their hand propping their heads up, inspirational quotes, birthday or valentine's or anniversary posts over a few sentences when you live with that person, ugly looking food photos, excessive child photos at all, Elf on the Shelf, holiday photos that are just selfies).

Does that make me a mean spirited killjoy? Probably. But I find them all cringe or really annoying. So whether I'm an intolerant miser or not, that shit gets hidden.

(Basically I just need to delete Facebook, but I keep it for cousins in the US)

IncyWincyGrownUp · 29/12/2021 03:09

I’m not a fan of any sort of family matching on the clothes front, and pyjamas seem to be the extreme example.

I just wince a little and scroll on if I see it online. I can still love my friends and family even though I don’t understand them. Thankfully my lot wouldn’t be seen dead matching, though they just about tolerated school uniform.

UsernameInTheTown · 29/12/2021 03:14

I don't see any of these sorts of pearl clutching horrors on my Facebook. Perhaps because I'm only FB 'friends' with real life friends and don't associate with attention seeking types.
Each to their own though and with the state of the world right now, I'm all for whatever brings you joy, as long as you're not harming anyone.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/12/2021 03:47

YABU OP, if I'm going to look at photos on a Christmas, I want them to be easy on the eye. Also my brother's family do it and I get them as hand me downs the following year.

Free PJs are class.Xmas Grin

TheKeatingFive · 29/12/2021 04:24

Yes tacky.. but if you like it fill your boots...but don't for a minute think others will.

Think others will ... what?

crazyjinglist · 29/12/2021 09:03

It's not my thing, but some of the arguments against it on here are ridiculous.

Is there any proof it's actually an American thing, or are you just assuming that because you think everything you sneer at must be an American thing?

Fast fashion is massive anyway. There are probably lots of people who have bought a NYE outfit that they'll wear fewer times than many wear their Christmas pyjamas. Why single out Christmas pyjamas when loads of people are saying they wear them all year round anyway?

As for the kids - they grow out of things pretty quickly regardless of what pattern they've got on them. Summer dresses, worn on the few hot days we get, then don't fit by the following year.

Admit it - it's pure snobbery. If you don't like people who do naff, cheesy (harmless) stuff and post photos of it, maybe you should unfollow them and find yourself some more aspirational middle class FB friends. Hmm

BoredZelda · 29/12/2021 10:11

Some people do reuse pyjamas throughout the year, but I've seen enough threads on MN to realise those aren't the majority.

But you haven’t really, have you.

BoredZelda · 29/12/2021 10:16

I saw something on FB end of November saying ‘here comes the matching PJ posts from those who have been having an affair all year’ - as long as all looks ok on Facebook though

What a ridiculous sentiment. I guess people are really envious of families having fun and feel the need to tear others down to make themselves feel better.

Exhausteddog · 29/12/2021 10:34

Obviously you can wear Xmas pjs all year but surely within about 4 or 5 years the adults will have multiple pairs of Xmas pjs? (Kids obviously will have grown out of them)
