To hate the matching PJs trend

Every post on my social media and messages from friends has featured an entire family, usually of primarily grown adults, wearing matching Christmas pyjamas.

Where did this come from???? Why is it suddenly a thing??? Why do we all have to see the pictures?

It seem to be an American idea that’s become a thing over here.

Sure. Because the Brits have no history of families wearing matching stuff. None whatsoever.

backonceagain79 · 28/12/2021 18:36

@gunnersgold

It's for the likes 🙄.. insecure women trying to prove they are good parents . Crack oh I say ! I work in retail and I had a husband in on Xmas eve hunting down matching pjs . I asked him why and he said his wife needs them to take pics for social media . We had a little laugh together at the fact this cost him £150! 🙈

Exactly this! It's for the likes. They wouldn't buy them and not put pics on social media

babouchette · 28/12/2021 18:37

I agree. It is naff AF.

🙋‍♀️ I bought them, we wore them, none of us even use social media. Didn’t spend £150 either. I have insecurities as I imagine most women do but they’re not connected to my bedtime attire.

RobinPenguins · 28/12/2021 18:57

I did take a photo to send to my mum though, so that probably makes me part of the insecure/wasteful/naff/common/chavvy/choose slur of your choice crew. She liked them. But then she has dementia so what the fuck does she know.

NutcrackerBuster · 28/12/2021 18:59

If anything I think it's weirder to get matching PJs for the entire family and NOT to be doing it for the purpose of taking pictures for social media. Why even do it, if not for the cringe pics? Do you just sit in your house on Christmas Eve with the curtains closed, putting on your five pairs of tartan reindeer PJs and chanting "one of us, one of us"?

IWantMoreStationery · 28/12/2021 19:00

RobinPenguins

I suspect you did it to have fun with your family.

People saying it's for Likes are just bitchy. People put many things on SM, some people don't. I think it's really sad that people get wound up over this.

Enjoy your bedtime attire.

Yes, that’s exactly what we do. We’re definitely not doing it because my 4 year old enjoys being “samesies” or because I buy new pyjamas for all 3 of us for Christmas anyway so it’s no more or less waste or expense if they’re matching or different. It’s definitely a cult. That’s the only thing it could be.
Lavender24 · 28/12/2021 19:03

I agree. Just another way for people to show off on social media and I bet the pjs barely get worn after the obligatory Facebook post.

They’re in the wash tonight so we’ll have to cope with being non-matching. Not sure how I’ll cope with that, what with being so desperate and insecure Grin According to the logic of previous posters non-matching pyjamas means DH is less likely to be cheating on me so I have that to console myself with Xmas Wink
Createdjustforthis · 28/12/2021 19:04

I wouldn’t myself as an adult but I love matchy matchy jammies for my children at Christmas. They wear them all year around though.

snapsieplopp · 28/12/2021 19:06

Does anyone ever admit to positing for likes?

bigbeachedwales · 28/12/2021 19:08

You bunch of snobs. It's fun. Let people do what makes them happy. Stop judging in your superior middle class way. Snobs.

Kdubs1981 · 28/12/2021 19:21

It makes me
Cringe too

Stellaris22 · 28/12/2021 19:34

I don't think there's anything middle class or snobby in being wary that this could be a bad thing in terms of the environment.

A lot of people are saying here that they use the pyjamas year round, or every year and pass them on to younger siblings. That's great.

But there are other threads where people say they throw into landfill uniform that has tiny stains, and buy brand new to replace.

This is the attitude that's worrying with these trends, the disposable view on clothing.

Agree 100%. It doesn’t have to be a wasteful activity but am fairly sure it is for the local families I know that do it.
WeatherwaxOn · 28/12/2021 19:37

I like to see how fast I can scroll past.

Mackmama · 28/12/2021 19:37

Backfired for me this year, my littlest refused to wear his! I’ll not be doing it again next year, they’ll get pyjamas but not Christmas ones x

KCee30 · 28/12/2021 19:38

I wanted to post this myself and thought I'd get flamed so thank you op 😅 I think it's hideous and it really makes me cringe! Siblings are fine but whole familes is cringe. I send a video where the whole extended families - about 20 of them were in matching pjs! 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I have two dc and I always buy them Christmas pjs. They have never matched 😅

ghostmouse · 28/12/2021 19:41

Ahh each to their own, it’s not my cup of tea and my kids would be wtf mum if I tried this 😂
But seeing other families do this what the harm

Except to the environment of course. I get that

TheStickMan · 28/12/2021 19:47

Honestly though why is it cringe?

It's a few photos on their own social media page, no different to posting a family picture at any other time of the year. Just in this one they happen to be wearing the same? So what, delete them, block them, unfollow them but what someone posts on their social media and what they get up to on Christmas Eve as a family is none of your business.

I post mine on social media every year as I want to, I don't do it for likes or to keep up with everyone else and I certainly don't do I to look like I'm a good parent. I don't need social media for that, I know I'm a good mum but part of that makes me want to post our family photos online for friends/family who we don't often see and just for me. It doesn't bother me if no one comments or likes it literally couldn't give two fucks but honestly just get a grip of yourselves if you think this is cringe.

StrawberrySanta · 28/12/2021 19:54

I'm not against it (wouldn't do it myself as it's a waste of money) but it's clearly for social media purpose only, like does anyone wear matching family PJs and not take a group selfie to post online? Bet they don't

TheNinny · 28/12/2021 19:57

I got cute scandi design ones that aren’t strictly speaking xmas ones so can re-use. My DD loved the fact I was dressed the same as her. I won’t do it every year probably but thought it was cute. Hell would freeze over before DH joined in so was just me and her

Puremule · 28/12/2021 20:00

Total cringe. All for the picture perfect social media shot. Merry Christmas from The Kelly’s!!!!
143 photo’s later…we have a winner! Post this one! Everyone looks cheesily happy all at the same time.
Ughhh false as fuck.

NutcrackerBuster · 28/12/2021 20:01

Actually yes, I freely admit to being a snob about this. PJs made by exploited underpaid workers in a sweatshop somewhere, probably out of polyester that will never degrade, to be thrown into landfill after Christmas, just for smug Western adults to make a point about what an amazingly close and connected family they are? So festive and fun.

Yes, I do judge the grown-ups who do it.
