To hate the matching PJs trend

Alysskea · 28/12/2021 10:46

Every post on my social media and messages from friends has featured an entire family, usually of primarily grown adults, wearing matching Christmas pyjamas.

Where did this come from???? Why is it suddenly a thing??? Why do we all have to see the pictures?

OP posts:

I agree. Its twee and shit. Seems to be done by people who think they're hi-lar-ious and oh so quirky and unique. Same with that bastard elf.
But it doesn't offend me, I just don't like it.

BobMortimersPetOwl · 29/12/2021 10:39

My SIL suggested we all have matching pjs and was told absolutely not. I'm a grown woman and don't need or want my clothing to be chosen for me.

peaceanddove · 29/12/2021 10:39

Not my style. But our DDs had matching PJs with their boyfriends this Christmas and I think they looked adorable.

phishy · 29/12/2021 10:40

I came on to post live and let live and then realised these PJs are likely only worn a few times as they’ll be too small for the kids next year and thought YANBU, what a huge environmental waste.

aweebitlost · 29/12/2021 10:41

@Exhausteddog

Obviously you can wear Xmas pjs all year but surely within about 4 or 5 years the adults will have multiple pairs of Xmas pjs? (Kids obviously will have grown out of them)
Yes, we normally just do it for the kids. I did buy for me and DH as well this year because we both needed a new pair of pyjamas... I wouldn't buy them if we didn't need them.
gogohm · 29/12/2021 10:42

Yanbu. People do what they want however wasteful to the environment but why post pictures in your nightclothes???

I'm guessing you wouldn't ant to see us, kids tend to wear pjs if they can be bothered/sober enough to remove clothes (young adults) we favour au naterel
@Stellaris22 Get what you mean about crackers but we bought some lovely reusable ones this year. Obviously you don't get the crack etc but still... I wrote my own jokes/quiz question in them and a little gift which suited the person and wouldn't be a waste e.g. new cufflinks for DH. I would have put them in his stocking anyway.
@LuckyAmy1986

You can buy cracker snaps online, if that appeals to you

@crazyjinglist

It's not my thing, but some of the arguments against it on here are ridiculous.

Is there any proof it's actually an American thing, or are you just assuming that because you think everything you sneer at must be an American thing?

Fast fashion is massive anyway. There are probably lots of people who have bought a NYE outfit that they'll wear fewer times than many wear their Christmas pyjamas. Why single out Christmas pyjamas when loads of people are saying they wear them all year round anyway?

As for the kids - they grow out of things pretty quickly regardless of what pattern they've got on them. Summer dresses, worn on the few hot days we get, then don't fit by the following year.

Admit it - it's pure snobbery. If you don't like people who do naff, cheesy (harmless) stuff and post photos of it, maybe you should unfollow them and find yourself some more aspirational middle class FB friends. Hmm

Spot on!!

@scarpa

I agree with you OP. Instant mute on social media (see also: any kind of professional photoshoot where newborn babies are posed with their hand propping their heads up, inspirational quotes, birthday or valentine's or anniversary posts over a few sentences when you live with that person, ugly looking food photos, excessive child photos at all, Elf on the Shelf, holiday photos that are just selfies).

Does that make me a mean spirited killjoy? Probably. But I find them all cringe or really annoying. So whether I'm an intolerant miser or not, that shit gets hidden.

(Basically I just need to delete Facebook, but I keep it for cousins in the US)

Ah yes, the obligatory disingenuous "I only have Facebook for overseas family" poster 🤣. Who conveniently forgets that WhatsApp, zoom, Dropbox etc exists! Amusing.

I literally live as far across the world from my family as it is possible to live and know fine well how easy it is to keep in touch and share things without Facebook. But so do you! Shame you can't be honest that you keep Facebook to nose on people and cast judgement for your amusement/pleasure. Sigh 😌

CheapFoodShits · 29/12/2021 11:11

DS and I had matching PJs for the first time this year and loved it. Luckily, I've lost a lot of weight this year and can fit into clothes for a 12 year old so I didn't have to pay the stupid adult prices everywhere was charging.

Rollmopsrule · 29/12/2021 11:17

Just another shit trend for some people to follow cashing in on consumerism. They'll be a different one next year. Scroll by and ignore

Alright, you sarky shite. It's not the kind of relationship where we'd WhatsApp or Zoom, they're blood relatives but due to an adoption we're not mega close. So yes, I like to nosy at what they're up to via their social media and we exchange the odd like/tag on photos they've dug up of relatives but I wouldn't want, say, a group chat with them.

No disingenuousness there, I absolutely do keep Facebook to be nosy. But only the stuff I find interesting - such as family abroad who don't have e.g. Instagram/other social media - and the things I listed I don't find interesting so I hide them, not sure why that would be so amusing? Are you upset because you post 6-paragraph declarations of love to your husband every half anniversary? Wink

crazyjinglist · 29/12/2021 17:33

Tbf, WhatsApp Zoom etc aren't remotely the same as FB. You can just idly keep up with what people are up to on FB and pop in the odd comment or like. WhatsApp and Zoom are more of a deliberate communication/conversation, which isn't always what you want with distant relatives or old acquaintances. Besides, if FB is the cousins' chosen medium then it seems reasonable to go with that. The vast majority of my FB friends (including family abroad or at the other end of the country) are not people I'd particularly want to Zoom or WhatsApp!

Lennon80 · 29/12/2021 19:39

Environmentally not great and looks pretty stupid imo YANBU

StrongSunglasses · 29/12/2021 20:06

Yanbu it’s like the modern day version of matching family shellsuits in the 90s 😂

Dud people do this? I was a teenager and this was never suggested at our house 😂
IWantMoreStationery · 29/12/2021 22:38

Not done the shell suits or pyjama thing but I think if it makes you laugh & feel nice do it. Post it all over social media as much as you want just to piss other people off.
