To hate the matching PJs trend

Every post on my social media and messages from friends has featured an entire family, usually of primarily grown adults, wearing matching Christmas pyjamas.

Where did this come from???? Why is it suddenly a thing??? Why do we all have to see the pictures?

OP posts:

Don't wear them then, no one's arsed.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 28/12/2021 13:35
@clarepetal I'm with you. Why do we have to take in the Americans baggage?
We don't have to do anything of the sort. But if some people like the idea then that's their choice.

RobinPenguins · 28/12/2021 13:38

@Lamerexo

Literally it makes me feel ill. 'Mummy elf', 'daddy elf', 'little elf 1' and 'little elf 2' 🤕
It’s unfortunate you have such a weak constitution that this literally makes you feel ill.
MrsSkylerWhite · 28/12/2021 13:40

You don’t have to see the pictures. Just don’t look.
Not something we do but why would we care what other people want to wear in their homes?
Odd complaint.

@NerrSnerr

What is the problem with things being from America? Why the America hate?
I've been noticing people really hate America!! It gets casually thrown in. I caught myself complaining about American accent on Thomas the tank as I didn't want it to confuse my toddler Blush

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

For me, it slightly rams hope the whole “you’re a single parent you won’t have this” - as it’s always pictures of two parent, heterosexual parent families.

However I think that’s just marketing and it’s probably my issue!

So YABU as it’s not really my issue what other people do and wear to feel festive

I think this is it. Now I’ve got my lovely family it all feels so much better. Back in the day I would have hated it.
Exhausteddog · 28/12/2021 13:51

I wouldn't do it and I think DH would look at me in complete bewilderment if I suggested it, and neither of my DC want to be on social media.
However if other people have the money or inclination to do this, and everyone consents to it, it's no skin off my nose. A few of my friends do.

Josette77 · 28/12/2021 13:53

I'm a single parent and me and 10 yo ds wear matching pjs. It would never occur to me that this is a sad thing to do with just the two of us.

We wear the pjs all winter.

And further more naff or not, I post a pic and I think we look bloody adorable. I'm not bothered if others find it nauseating. I think we are cute. 💗

GoodMorningMillicent · 28/12/2021 13:53

Matching family pjs are cringey.
But it’s grown men in reindeer/snowman/Christmas pudding PJs that really turns my stomach.

funinthesun19 · 28/12/2021 14:11

My kids had matching ones this year and looked lovely. Meh, each to their own really isn’t it? I loved seeing other people’s pictures on Facebook.

HunterGatherer · 28/12/2021 14:14

It's always 2 parent, heterosexual families
Really? Is that because your social media is full of these types of families?
Mine is very mixed and I can confirm that a very diverse bunch are wearing matching PJ'S this year!

yetanotherunicorn · 28/12/2021 14:16

Obviously people can do whatever they want, but those pics always make me think "well, the sex has definitely gone in that marriage"

Good for you and I bet you did look cute Xmas Smile.

Judgy people are so annoying and sad.

HereticFanjo · 28/12/2021 14:35

It's a wasteful American thing for people wanting their lives to look perfect even when they're not. But if it makes them happy let them get on with it. It's not like they're sitting about with matching crack pipes or something.

NerrSnerr · 28/12/2021 14:51

If it was a Swedish, Chinese or Australian thing would that be ok? Or do we only accept traditions that started in the UK?

Is anything from America acceptable?

Nope.
Stellaris22 · 28/12/2021 15:28

Only reason it bothers me is from an environmentalist perspective. These tend to be Christmassy pyjamas worn a few times a year. I wouldn't be surprised if they were then just thrown in the bin and new sets bought each year.

It's a cute idea and family fun, but I'd be surprised if any of these pyjamas are reused each year.

elp30 · 28/12/2021 15:32

What?

I'm American and I've never done "Elf on the Shelf" or had my family wear matching pajamas and a host of other "American" things. But if my fellow citizens want to do it because it makes them happy and they're not forcing me to partake, it's fine by me.

edwinbear · 28/12/2021 15:34

It’s not for me and my family, but if it makes my friends happy then good for them. It certainly doesn’t offend me Smile

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 28/12/2021 15:38

We have matching pjs on christmas eve because the kids asked if we could after seeing friends doing it and they love it. I cant say i care either way to be honest and we wear them all year so i dont consider it a waste of money.

Maybe some people do treat them as disposable but the people I know who do the matching pj's wear them throughout the season.

Can I mention the British Christmas cracker?

That is environmentally wasteful but people still buy them. This was the first year my family (husband is English) didn't have them at our Christmas table in the 17 years of living in the US as they can no longer be imported. I'll admit that I missed it but I certainly didn't miss throwing all that paper and the shit little gifts away.

DillonPanthersTexas · 28/12/2021 15:40

I just thought all these people were lumberjacks??

aweebitlost · 28/12/2021 15:50

We wear ours all year and they're also passed through the DCs so the youngest has quite a few pairs! Those that aren't completely worn out will in turn will get passed to younger cousins, friends etc. I don't use SM so no pictures on there.

I'm sure there are people that buy and then bin straight after Christmas but I imagine those people act in many other environmentally unfriendly ways. Christmas itself has the potential to be horrendously environmentally unfriendly - or less so, depending on how you do it.

SlashBeef · 28/12/2021 15:55

Some people aren't so bitter and mean it seems to ooze from their comments!
I don't understand how it's wasteful. My kids have new matching Christmas pyjamas and then wear them all year round.
I don't buy adult ones because I don't like pyjamas so that would be wasteful just for a photo.

Stellaris22 · 28/12/2021 15:57

Maybe I'm just remembering an old thread where someone said they bought brand new school uniform as soon as a shirt got a pen mark or stain, and threw the clothes into landfill. That's the attitude towards this trend I worry about.

If the pyjamas are getting worn throughout the year then I don't see the issue. It's a bit of fun and you'd be buying pyjamas anyway. I just worry about the wastefulness of these trends.

We don't buy crackers as I find them pointless, but that's a different issue.
