To hate the matching PJs trend

Every post on my social media and messages from friends has featured an entire family, usually of primarily grown adults, wearing matching Christmas pyjamas.

Where did this come from???? Why is it suddenly a thing??? Why do we all have to see the pictures?

I'm with you, OP- it's toe-curling.

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/12/2021 12:15

If they’re still in good condition after then they’ll go to a friend or charity. I’ve never seen a comment on here about how wasteful Halloween costumes are which literally do only get worn once a year

Halloween costumes are definitely wasteful. As are the school Victorian day/evacuee etc costumes.

Dd1s stuff gets passed to dd2. Dd2 usually kills everything Hmm i used to take stufff to one if those pre loved places until they got super fussy. Charity shops round here often have signs up saying we don't want any more donations right now as people just constantly dump their crap in a bin bag outside all the time.

I've literally no where to take the very few items that do survive.

Plus tbh I find the quality shocking these days. Items I had 10 years ago that had been thru 2 kids before they got to mine were always in better nick than stuff I'd bought new that had only been worn by 1 child.

I've literally nowhere to pass thus stuff onto

mistermagpie · 28/12/2021 12:17

I think it's cute, it's not hurting anyone and we've had a really shit year, so if it cheers my kids up then so what?

We do wear them all year, my kids are still wearing last years and so am I!

IWantMoreStationery · 28/12/2021 12:19

I do find it hilarious how people get worked up about what people post on their social media.

Just delete them. You are not forced to follow them.

NerrSnerr · 28/12/2021 12:23

@Whatwouldscullydo is their a FB selling or free site locally? I put things on there for free and they're usually picked up really quickly.

We've also left things out on the pavement out the front with a 'please help yourself' sign and they go really quick.

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/12/2021 12:25

I quite like it. It’s another cute festive thing ‘to do’. What grates me is the standard comment alongside “Merry Christmas from our family to yours”

All very picture perfect! I can imagine it being a bit vomit worthy if things aren’t going well in your own life.

Northernsoullover · 28/12/2021 12:26

Oh come on it IS the height of naff! You can imagine that one family member commandeering the whole family into their pj's and lining them up for the SM photo. I feel second hand embarrassment when I see them.

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/12/2021 12:26

And people do it all over instagram (especially American big families)

GTAlogic · 28/12/2021 12:28

Stop moaning OP. You'll do your blood pressure no good!

We didn't get them Xmas PJs this year but my dc wear their PJs all year round regardless of the theme. They last ages too.

No-one is forcing you to see their images; you do have the choice to hide or unfriend them. People can post what they like to their own page. To those saying they're clearly spending more time taking photos than with their family: don't be daft, it takes a minute or two to take a quick phone snap!

If you wouldn't do it, fine, but stop trying to inflict your miserable views onto everyone else.

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/12/2021 12:29

nerr I've left stuff out before and it's not been taken. Kicked down the road maybe..taken no.

I hadn't thought of face book sites tbh I don't post much I just nose Blush

I could well join up next time I need to get rid. Mostly it's not fit for much these days. With the shocking quality.

DeepaBeesKit · 28/12/2021 12:40

My kids loved it the one year I had matching ones with them. I wear pyjamas anyway and was due a pair so didnt mind buying them. I haven't bought another pair though.

The kids love matching each other so I do often get them matching ones when they outgrow a pair.

Lamerexo · 28/12/2021 12:43

Literally it makes me feel ill. 'Mummy elf', 'daddy elf', 'little elf 1' and 'little elf 2' 🤕

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/12/2021 12:44

For me, it slightly rams hope the whole “you’re a single parent you won’t have this” - as it’s always pictures of two parent, heterosexual parent families.

However I think that’s just marketing and it’s probably my issue!

So YABU as it’s not really my issue what other people do and wear to feel festive

RobinPenguins · 28/12/2021 12:44

I love our matching PJs. I deliberately buy styles that are only Christmas adjacent (e.g. bears and a pine forest) so we wear them all year. I don’t put photos on social media so don’t really care what other people think of it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/12/2021 12:45

And you’d never get my extended family in them in a month of Sundays

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/12/2021 12:46

(Although saying that, I’ve have been known to buy a “theme” like all have chequered/ tartan ones so probably can’t complain!)

stitchinguru · 28/12/2021 12:46

I agree.
Cringe, with a capital C.
Only thing that makes them interesting is the embarrassed look on the adult male faces - they’ve clearly had their arms twisted - maybe with the promise of a Christmas shag when the PJs get boring!
Come on girls, no need!

Alysskea · 28/12/2021 13:01

@clarepetal I'm with you. Why do we have to take in the Americans baggage?

OP posts:
Notwithittoday · 28/12/2021 13:02

Let’s face it a lot of people are not going out and socialising as much as they used to so whatever keeps you and yours entertained. Ours were gifts and proceeds went to charity so I was quite happy to wear ours. I was surprised how amused the dc were. Probably is an American idea. There’s a lot done now that’s over the top… baby showers, Christmas Eve boxes, proms for Y6s…

Yerroblemom1923 · 28/12/2021 13:12

Naff, cheap, chavvy. Thought people had wised up to this nonsense by now. Like we need more poor quality tat going into landfill. Buy mindfully, folks. #those memories will last longer

Darkstar4855 · 28/12/2021 13:17

YANBU just on the grounds of the environmental and social impact of encouraging people to buy cheap poor quality clothing that they don’t really need.

AgeingDoc · 28/12/2021 13:22

Some of my extended family do this. The grandparents always look very awkward. Each to their own and all that, but there's clearly some coercion going on in some families which is unfair. I've told my children that there's only one word they need to remember if they ever try any such crap on me, and that's "disinherited".

StFrancisdeCompostela · 28/12/2021 13:27

It is truly naff imo but if people want to make idiots of themselves by posting cringe instagram pictures of awkward-looking dads and mothers with rictus grins in some tasteless, flammable jammies that will no doubt be binned by new year it’s not really any skin off my nose.

TheStickMan · 28/12/2021 13:27

I have bought them every year since DS first Christmas 4 years ago. Me and DP love it and it's something we will continue every year hopefully. Me and DP still have all 4 pairs and wear them on a regular basis (sometimes even on the same night) unfortunately DS don't fit him the next year (shock horror children grow) but they get donated either on Facebook or charity shops.

TheStickMan · 28/12/2021 13:29

Oh and yes I do post a photo on social media just like I post various other things on social media
