To hate the matching PJs trend

Every post on my social media and messages from friends has featured an entire family, usually of primarily grown adults, wearing matching Christmas pyjamas.

Where did this come from???? Why is it suddenly a thing??? Why do we all have to see the pictures?

OP posts:

In South Korea, newly married couples wearing matching outfits on honeymoon! It's adorable but always made me do a double take when I saw someone doing this.

snapsieplopp · 28/12/2021 11:41

@Onlinedilema 😉

NeedAHoliday2021 · 28/12/2021 11:41

I find it odd because I have 3 dds and they all have such different styles and colour preferences we’d never find any we’d agree on so it would be worn for the photo then never again. I guess some siblings like being dressed the same? I have identical twins and at age 10 it’s a definite nope! Grin I treated myself to some lovely pjs … not planning to post a photo of me in nightwear though!

SushiGo · 28/12/2021 11:44

@WhatScratch

With all the bile, racism, misogyny and dangerous anti vaxx misinformation on social media I just can’t get worked up about matching pjs.
Same.

It's cute, and I imagine most do get worn again - how man people would actually throw out 4+ pairs of pjs just becauseit wasn't December anymore?

Although we don't do it because I too can't be arsed with sorting them in the laundry.

MrsTophamHat · 28/12/2021 11:44

The best thing I've done in the last few weeks is hidden all my social media apps (except Mumsnet!). I've spent too long mindlessly scrolling through this sort of stuff and allowing myself to feel inadequate.

I have no idea what anybody else did for Christmas, and my life isn't any poorer for it.

IKissedSantaClaus · 28/12/2021 11:47

I don't think people throw them immediately in the landfill on Boxing Day so I'm not sure how it's wasteful.

We love doing it as a family, it makes the kids happy so it makes us happy. Don't really give a fuck what others think. Don't have social media so have no idea what others are doing but I hope they're happy and had a nice Christmas.

I am also married to an American and can confirm that some wonderful things have been imported from there. Wink

Makes my teeth itch! So twee and annoying.

MrsToothyBitch · 28/12/2021 11:52

Not my taste tbh although if people like it and want to do it for themselves, that's perfectly ok; as long as the PJs get worn again and it's not wasteful. Pointless here as we match in being equally naked in bed & I don't think anyone wants or needs to see that. Grin

On SM, I reckon behind 90% of smiley, calm, insta-trend-tasteful matchy-match pj festive family photos, there's one very stressed, angry mum who has made it all happen to her EXACT specification. A bit like being the general in charge of a Soviet era parade...

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/12/2021 11:53

I find pyjamas quite wasteful with small children at the best if times. But that's because dd2 has grown alot over the oast 2 ir 3 years. Having bought pyjamas one Xmas only fir them.not to fit very soon.after I jusy carried on using hamd me downs from.dd1 or leggings and t shirts that r not fit to be win outside the house but fine fir sleeping in. It's made more use of the stuff we already had

Madness, isn’t it? I was going to comment something similar after reading a comment someone posted calling it ‘dreadful’. I’ve just watched a clip on Fb about the parents of those 12 kids that were found starving and chained to their beds. THATS fucking dreadful. How hateful of a person do you have to be to have such vile opinions about matching pj’s?
HunterGatherer · 28/12/2021 11:56

Oh FGS, it's naff but just a bit of fun. I can't get worked up over it and if the kids enjoy it so what?
I think I'd get on better with the folk in the matching PJ's than the ones sneering at them.

snapsieplopp · 28/12/2021 11:58

Slight overreaction! I think most of us are capable of disliking trivial things & condemning child abuse 🙄

shrunkenhead · 28/12/2021 11:59

Naff as hell, same goes for xmas eve boxes and that creepy elf that "gets up to mischief" every night....who can be bothered?! Well, we all know the "type" that can...but for the rest of us we'll all just crack on with xmas without the #making memories shit! Hmm

Prescottdanni123 · 28/12/2021 12:00

Matching pyjamas aren't my thing, not least because finding somewhere that has the same pyjama set in everybody's size sounds like a pain in the backside. But seeing other people do it doesn't bother me, if that's what they want to do.

HunterGatherer · 28/12/2021 12:01

Nothing annoys me more than the phrase "Makes my teeth itch". Grin Guess we are all different.
NerrSnerr · 28/12/2021 12:02

I think some people need to remember they just because they do things differently to others does not make them superior in any way.

You're not a better person because you make different pyjama or social media choices to others.

opinionminion · 28/12/2021 12:03

I agree - it's naff, cheap and looks ridiculous !

Thepineapplemystery · 28/12/2021 12:03

We've done it for the last few years, but a) they get worn year round and b) I've yet to get a photo of us all in them, let alone post it to any social media.

snapsieplopp · 28/12/2021 12:04

I certainly make better choices than Trump with regards to social media & I'm definitely a better person!
😆

No, the people calling parents who buy their kids matching pj’s ‘stupid, foolish, vile and dreadful’ are over reacting. And I don’t get all the people commenting that what’s the point because they’re going to grow out of them soon. Do they not buy their children clothes then because they’re just going to grow out of them? They still need pj’s no matter how little or long they last. I don’t know anyone immediately throwing their Xmas pj’s in the bin after it’s over. I always go at least one size up (2 if I’ve got onesies) to try and get more wear out of them. If they’re still in good condition after then they’ll go to a friend or charity. I’ve never seen a comment on here about how wasteful Halloween costumes are which literally do only get worn once a year.
IWantMoreStationery · 28/12/2021 12:08

I find threads like this bizarre. We don't do the matching pyjama thing but I think if people want to do it and they think it's fun then it is none of your business and you shouldn't give it a second thought.

snapsieplopp · 28/12/2021 12:09

Yeah you're overreacting, you don't have to read the thread if you don't like it. It's fine for people to love matching pjs & fine for people to dislike them.

IWantMoreStationery · 28/12/2021 12:10

@opinionminion

Other people might think you look Naff, cheap & ridiculous
BasicDad · 28/12/2021 12:11

Ok Ebenezer, some people enjoy it and like to share their happiness.

snapsieplopp · 28/12/2021 12:12

You're overreacting because you posted this I’ve just watched a clip on Fb about the parents of those 12 kids that were found starving and chained to their beds. THATS fucking dreadful"

Which had nothing to do with matching pjs. Me thinks you're a fan of virtue signalling though 😜
