My in laws came for early lunch at 11:30 and they are still here

AIBU to think it is about time they pushed off?

I've fed them lunch, cheese, cake, mince pies, booze and endless cups of tea. We've 'done' presents. We've had the dull conversations about money (them) and covid (a hoax apparently). I have resisted plunging a knife into one or all of them.

I want a bath and a nice glass of wine and some P&Q. What is the etiquette for getting them gone?

OP is a horrible rude person because she’s tired and exhausted after hosting covid deniers for 5 whole hours. I’d be done after 5 minutes! 😂 OP you need a medal!

Meraas · 27/12/2021 20:41

@Tumbleweed101

One day we might all be the 'inlaws'. I wouldn't care if my sons partner wanted to go and have a bath. Would give me more time to talk to my son in private.
But they’ve got 4 kids. Why wouldn’t you leave them alone after a long day together to get on with baths, bedtime etc?
MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 27/12/2021 20:44

This thread seemed really normal at the beginning, but now it's bonkers!

The Christmas holidays can be pretty boring, I s'pose.

Oh yes. DIL can get up at the crack of dawn, cook and serve dinner, clear up and place out mince pies and drinks and then bugger off so MIL can have a private conversation with her beloved son. Like the DIL is nothing but a maid and a bother once having served her purpose.

Derailing my own thread but I've found a dusty bit for @Notmoresugar

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the dirt round the bath overflow. Gross!

OP perhaps your in laws know you don't like them and are deliberately staying just to wind you up!

Sorry couldn’t be bothered to read all the judgemental posts- just your replies. Hope you had as much fun writing them as I had reading them. Made me chuckle

Enjoy your well deserved bath

Why not post a pic of your own immaculate tub then? Bet you won’t.

YABU in my view. I’m a DIL and neither of us begrudges parents visiting. Yeah sure they can have their little quirks that annoy us and yes it must be ridiculous re. the whole
COVID denying thing but why does it have to turn into this whole negative thing because you can’t articulate your emotions . How about:

“I’m really exhausted and am going for a nap/bath, it’s been hectic over Xmas. Please stay and chat with DH, we’ve really enjoyed you visiting.” And off you go.

Said this loads of times and no one has been remotely offended as families and adults can communicate with each other without being passive aggressive and mean. We’ll all be old (hopefully) soon enough and grateful for the company and to see our families.

For those of you keen to get to the bottom of the dirty overflow thingy mystery it is in fact vintage black goo. Been there since the bath was installed 50+ years ago.

Practically an heirloom.

Could you post a picture of your bathroom bin?

BitterTits · 27/12/2021 21:02

Fucking hell, what a bunch of vacuous pricks the overflow commenters are. I'm looking at you @Notmoresugar and @Mamamia7962

guffaux · 27/12/2021 21:05

This is the 3rd Christmas in a row we've not been able to travel to Ireland to spend Christmas with my in-laws (C-section in 2019, travel restrictions in 2020 and a positive Covid test this year). We know we won't have many more with my lovely father-in-law following a diagnosis a few months ago. I can't muster much sympathy for you I'm afraid.

Almost2022 · 27/12/2021 21:13

Love your sense of humour Op. Grin hope you had a nice bath 🛁

Mamamia7962 · 27/12/2021 21:14

Meraas - My bathroom was cleaned on Christmas Eve so yes it is immaculate thank you.

What's all this about wanting sympathy?Didn't want sympathy. Wanted a bath. Have now had bath (plus some helpful housekeeping pointers for the future) and all is now well.

Thank you

This is very sad for you, I'm sorry. However not everyone has a lovely FIL.

@Meraas an instructional diagram would be more helpful to those of us in the overflow challenged community don't you think?

Haha, yes they can take inspiration to draw it from their spiritual guru, Mrs Hinch.
