Sick of my family panicking.

Covid It's all My family talk about. Think about. I have a cold and I'm happy to stay away from everyone. My sisters saying I should get a test so I can go see my parents. My parents are fully jabbed and getting some flow tests today just because. I have no fever. No dry cough. I have a runny nose and a tickly throat. I have 3 family members texting me today. Sister thinks I should get a test as she presumes I wanna see my parents over Christmas. Adult niece has been testing all week and says maybe I should test but would I like to go walk with her and her dog aswel. Mum's saying I need to stay home and keep away and get a test yet asking me what I was doing and she heard I was in bed early. Now my niece is asking me if I have any tests here.

I am so sick of people panicking when I'm not even going near them. I have a mild runny nose and a tickle in my throat when I lie down..why can't I just keep away from them if they don't want to take risks?

@Confiscatedpopit

All this panic and guilt-tripping on here about something which now you admit ‘gives you a mild cold’ and ‘no symptoms’. Oh and something we were all celebrating ending in January due to the vaccines.

Absolutely pathetic- we need to move on with life and get a grip. And before anyone starts about this being quoted regularly let me just say… ‘protect the NHS’ ‘if you can’t breathe in a mask you wouldn’t like a ventilator’, ‘get boosted now’… yes it works both ways.

Some people are just loving this in my opinion and others are seriously brainwashed. Terrified of living life because of a cold. Flu has the same effect every year, no one behaves like this.

Where are you seeing panic or terror? I'm not sure we're reading the same thread.
bedheadedzombie · 27/12/2021 14:06

@MrsLargeEmbodied

my lateral flows take more than 5 minutes out of my day!
How? It's 5 seconds per nose, and a 15 minute wait (while you just go on with your daily tasks till you check)
Pollymollydolly · 27/12/2021 14:07

Some people are breathtakingly stupid. Covid, in all it’s mutations, has always been relatively mild for most people. For some people it is much more serious or even fatal.

astoundedgoat · 27/12/2021 14:20

@MrsLargeEmbodied

How? The actual twizzling bit = about 20 seconds, swizzling it in the fluid about 30 seconds, squeeze it into the cassette, 5 seconds. Come back in 15 minutes, look at it.

My Dad is elderly and I swear to God it takes his whole morning, because he probably lays everything out on his table at perfect right angles, and re-reads the instructions 8 times, watches a youtube video on it, makes himself a cup of tea, reads on of his mad right wing websites to catch up on whatever lunacy he follows these days, rearranges the gubbins, re-reads the instructions and THEN starts (maybe) but for a normal human being it's under a minute.

Christinatherabbit · 27/12/2021 14:27

Your describing symptoms of the new variant. Why would you not just take a Lf? I don't understand your issue?

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 27/12/2021 14:30

Op I’m not panicking about covid and I haven’t been vaccinated, but I would have done a test if I were going to see family members, especially with a slight sore throat and runny nose. I’ve had covid and that’s how it started for me.

I thought people were doing lateral flows regularly?

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 27/12/2021 14:31

And a lateral flow test takes about 20 seconds for a normal person. Stop being such a wimp.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 27/12/2021 14:33

I had your symptoms, did a LFT and it was positive, PCR the same. Just get a test done

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 27/12/2021 14:36

@WonderfulYou

Oh fgs enough of this now. I am 'getting on with my life' (going to work, kids at school, meeting friends, going to the cinema, just booked a holiday). I'm also taking 5 minutes out of my week to lateral flow test every couple of days, to make sure I don't inadvertently stop other people getting on with their lives.

👏👏👏
Well said!!

LakieLady · 27/12/2021 14:48

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

We (triple jabbed) are doing LTF tests before meeting up with anyone, whether we have symptoms or not. I wouldn’t want it on my conscience to have infected anyone because I couldn’t BA. I know LTFs are not 100% reliable but they’re a lot better than nothing, and it’s absolutely no big deal to do one.

If you don’t actually want to meet up with whoever, that’s a bit different.

Same here.

My SIL (triple jabbed), BIL (triple jabbed) and DNiece (double jabbed) all had Covid a couple of weeks before Christmas. They all tested positive even before they got symptoms, and caught it from someone who was asymptomatic at the time.

I now do an LFT before I go and visit anyone, and before anyone visits me.

potoforchids · 27/12/2021 14:51

Runny nose and tickly throat were my initial symptoms too. Developed a cough later.

You need to get a test. Testing when you don't feel well isn't 'covid panicking', surely?

Confiscatedpopit · 27/12/2021 14:57

@Pollymollydolly

So is the flu. Do we stop life for that? Cars prove fatal for a few people every day, we don’t clear all the roads and ban cars. What is stupid are the brainwashed like yourself and the overreaction from a few scientists who are clearly enjoying the power given a bit too much.

It’s akin to burning down the house after finding a wasps’ nest.

cherryonthecakes · 27/12/2021 15:00

OP - PCR are for fever, loss of smell etc
LFT are for catching cases where people don't have the main symptoms. It's not obvious if you are seeing people or not but the 7 day isolation rather than 10 is if you produce a negative lateral flow on 2 consecutive days.

LFT have allowed many people to continue with their normal Christmas this year. Quick test on the day and people can enjoy their day as much as possible during a pandemic. It is ridiculous that a quick test is seen as an imposition when it made gatherings safer as the positive cases stayed away to protect their loved ones.

Secondary school children have been doing them 2 to 5 times a week depending on how high case rates are locally. Funny that they can cope but grown adults find it a "ball ache" or too uncomfortable to do despite their loved ones health being on the line.

It's great news that Omicron is mild in many but it's not mild for all. I have it right now and it's only now on day 4 that I might not need to go to sleep before bedtime.

Dorismargaret · 27/12/2021 15:06

@Russelhobskettle

You need to go and get a PCR test. Or stay at home.
No she doesnt. She's not eligible for a PCR because...

"You are eligible to get a PCR test if you have any coronavirus symptoms.

WarningIf you have a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or loss or change to your sense of smell or taste, you should stay at home. You can leave home to get or post a test. "

She doesn't have any of the symptoms

TortolaParadise · 27/12/2021 15:10

Concern, panic, empathy, fussing, flapping.... you can not control their behaviour / reaction to news that you shared with them. I do not think their responses are disproportionate. I can however see how it from your perspective.

Just an aside - I work with a major 'flapper' I have learned to dial said person down over the years.

ButterfliesandMoths · 27/12/2021 15:13

The symptoms you describe were the symptoms I had and I tested to positive. So I think you should test just to be sure.

ravenmum · 27/12/2021 15:19

It’s akin to burning down the house after finding a wasps’ nest
OK, I'll bite Grin I'm stuck at home with Covid, why not?
In your view, what would be the equivalent of calling in a wasp expert and having the wasps safely removed without doing any damage?

CityCommuter · 27/12/2021 15:19

@Strawbz8988 a runny nose combined with a thickly throat are the classic Omicron symptoms... you most likely have it as it's extremely contagious... most of my children's friends had these symptoms before they got a confirmed positive PCR test within the last few days... surely you'd like to know for your own peace of mind whether you have Covid or not regardless of you not planning on going out anyway? Are you afraid of the test or do you suffer from health anxiety?

CityCommuter · 27/12/2021 15:20

Tickly not thickly btw!

lifeinlimbo2020 · 27/12/2021 15:29

@RonaLisa

They were reporting most colds in london were covid

People seem to be forgetting that the common cold is also a coronavirus. We need to stop the hysteria about variants, testing, etc, etc.

Refusing to do something simple for no reason is the epitome of drama.

Pollymollydolly · 27/12/2021 15:40

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

I am not brainwashed, nor am I a fan of lockdowns and ongoing restrictions. However I am clearly able to see that the purpose of all the restrictions is to avoid overwhelming the health service - something that neither the annual flu nor road traffic accidents have ever come close to doing.

Signs are positive that omicron, although more contagious, is milder in severity. It will likely continue to pose a higher risk to vulnerable groups and the huge numbers of people testing positive is concerning in that, even if only a small percentage require hospitalisation, it could overwhelm the health service. Particularly considering the amount of hospital staff out with with covid or isolating.

In the longer term there are new more effective treatments for covid as well as vaccines being tweaked and developed. The huge number of people getting covid should also provide good natural immunity. I do not believe that Covid restrictions will be needed for very much longer. At the moment it makes sense for people to err on the side of caution.

Siameasy · 27/12/2021 16:06

Over and over I’m reading here “it typically presents like a cold”
So we can agree that for the majority of people it is like a cold.
Isolating for 7-10 days with a cold (or less) is not tenable going forward in terms of the impact on services, retail etc. Its impractical to have otherwise well people off sick and to pay them for it.

Lavender24 · 27/12/2021 16:18

YANBU but you won't get sensible responses on Mumsnet.

ravenmum · 27/12/2021 16:19

So we can agree that for the majority of people it is like a cold
I'd recommend reading up on the ways in which it is not like a cold.
If the similarities were the relevant factor, then Boris wouldn't be as sweaty-looking as he is.
