Sick of my family panicking.

Covid It's all My family talk about. Think about. I have a cold and I'm happy to stay away from everyone. My sisters saying I should get a test so I can go see my parents. My parents are fully jabbed and getting some flow tests today just because. I have no fever. No dry cough. I have a runny nose and a tickly throat. I have 3 family members texting me today. Sister thinks I should get a test as she presumes I wanna see my parents over Christmas. Adult niece has been testing all week and says maybe I should test but would I like to go walk with her and her dog aswel. Mum's saying I need to stay home and keep away and get a test yet asking me what I was doing and she heard I was in bed early. Now my niece is asking me if I have any tests here.

I am so sick of people panicking when I'm not even going near them. I have a mild runny nose and a tickle in my throat when I lie down..why can't I just keep away from them if they don't want to take risks?

Your post is all over the place OP but you do have symptoms that match the omicron variant so you should really test

Having no symptoms at all matches the omicron variant too, however the testable symptoms for a PCR are the ones the OP listed. There's a reason - because whilst they may well be the symptoms, they are also the symptoms to loads of other things and the likelihood is they are other things - hence wasting a test delaying other people from getting their results etc. who are more likely to be covid.

Of course, with the prevalence of omicron being so high because the vaccine is useless at preventing spread, it's more likely that you have covid. But if it's so likely that you have covid, simply act as if you do and isolate, and you don't even need a test at all.

Eatingsoupwithafork · 27/12/2021 11:46

I got a runny, stuffy nose Christmas night and tested positive yesterday with a lateral flow. Took a PCR yesterday which is also positive. I have none of the three main symptoms. This new variant does not present like the other strains. At the very least take a lateral flow but I’d recommend a PCR.

5128gap · 27/12/2021 11:47

I too get very frustrated by people who want to run their entire lives around covid and expect others to do the same. Fortunately in RL I don't know many of them. That said, you are showing symptoms that suggest you may actually have covid, so in that situation I would test as its a bit more than theoretical.

LadyCatStark · 27/12/2021 11:48

Covid felt exactly like a mild cold to me so yes, you should test. Then maybe your family will stop stressing anyway.

SpanielsAreMyLife · 27/12/2021 11:50

What a load of fuss about nothing.

Do an LFT then everyone will chill out.

ravenmum · 27/12/2021 11:50

@auberginefrog

For what it’s worth the nhs site currently still says cough/fever/loss of smell as a reason to test and if everyone gets a PCR for cold symptoms then the system will grind to a halt as it’s over-run. That being said LFTs are not sensitive enough to definitely rule it out and should not be used if symptomatic. I think this thread neatly demonstrates the complete lack of knowledge people still have about when to test and which test to use…
But you are saying that OP is not symptomatic for Covid?
BeLessMe · 27/12/2021 11:51

🙄

LFT can give false negatives. You need to PCR.

You have Omicron and sound very ignorant.

Babyroobs · 27/12/2021 11:53

As the two symptoms you have described are the two main symptoms of Omnicron, then of course you need to stay in until you've done a test.

ApolloandDaphne · 27/12/2021 11:54

Your family are right. You need to do a test.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/12/2021 11:55

@CriminalOrator

Just get a bloody test. Any cold-like symptoms should be tested just so you can rule out the highly infectious latest strain of Covid. Christ almighty.
I have permanent cold like symptoms, I can't test every time I blow my bloody nose!
Cocomarine · 27/12/2021 11:55

None of what your family has said is “panicking” 🙄
You have symptoms that are reasonably likely to be Covid (Omicron) and you’re clearly behind the times on that and should actually listen to them.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/12/2021 11:56

We (triple jabbed) are doing LTF tests before meeting up with anyone, whether we have symptoms or not. I wouldn’t want it on my conscience to have infected anyone because I couldn’t BA.
I know LTFs are not 100% reliable but they’re a lot better than nothing, and it’s absolutely no big deal to do one.

If you don’t actually want to meet up with whoever, that’s a bit different.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/12/2021 11:56

@R0tational

She may also have a cold, they do still exist
MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/12/2021 11:58

the guidelines should have been updated

dont people listen to/read the news?

ddl1 · 27/12/2021 11:58

People who have been vaccinated often merely experience cold-like symptoms if they do get Covid; and this is especially true of the Omicron variant. I'm not saying that you definitely have it (colds haven't disappeared from the world!); but it would make sense to take a test if you are visiting friends or family. Alternatively, you could just choose to self-isolate if you don't have to be at work, and if you aren't planning to 'mix' over the holiday season.

Cornettoninja · 27/12/2021 11:59

I have permanent cold like symptoms, I can't test every time I blow my bloody nose

@PinkSparklyPussyCat the guidance covers this, if existing symptoms worsen or you get other ones then you test (PCR that is, LFT’s are for anytime really).

Xmasishere10 · 27/12/2021 12:00

Fair enough there’s a lot of panic around that can be frustrating to be on the receiving end of but given your symptoms I would do a PCR or at least a LTF unless you’re planning to isolate for the next 7ish days or unless you’ve not seen anyone you could have caught it from in the last week.

I tested negative on a Monday evening developed the mildest scratchy throat on Tuesday and by the Tuesday my LTF was positive. That was initially the only symptom I had (I had omicron) and I was so surprised. I test regularly due to work and have to register the results otherwise like you I might have dismissed it. Learned my lesson.

Pinkyxx · 27/12/2021 12:02

You've created the drama through refusing to test. If you plan to see your parents (your post isn't clear) take an LFT, it takes 5 mins..

JuergenSchwarzwald · 27/12/2021 12:03

You have Omicron and sound very ignorant

why so many personal attacks on this thread. If the OP isn't going to see anyone why does she need to test? She's not a pre teen who may need to show she's recovered for travel.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/12/2021 12:03

That's what I'm doing @Cornettoninja, the problem being some days are worse than others.

I've had a PCR when symptoms have been bad but I struggle with LFTs as for some reason they make my nose very sore. I've just done 6 days in a row as I was a close contact last Monday and my nostrils are so sore. I'll do them if I'm meeting someone but not just as a regular thing.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 27/12/2021 12:04

@SpanielsAreMyLife

What a load of fuss about nothing.

Do an LFT then everyone will chill out.

no they won't because "LFTs don't work" and "the NHS list of symptoms is out of date" so they'll still go on and on about getting a PCR.
DontTellThemYourNamePike · 27/12/2021 12:05

We have anti testers in our family. They are amazing with their clairvoyant ability to just know whether they have Covid or a cold. Getting a test has become very, very easy.

My eldest started off with cold symptoms. He had Covid. How do I know? A fecking test. Simple.

User2638483 · 27/12/2021 12:06

Aren’t you curious? I’d do it for that reason if nothing else!
