To think the Christmas Number One has gone tacky and downhill?

I just saw that LadBaby has had its 4th Christmas number one single. Based on what? Tik tok and streaming views on YouTube? I haven’t heard the song and not going to bother but does anyone else think music these days is just low effort, cheap and bland? What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example.

Also saw that they had a rivalry to get to number one with a band called “The Kunts”. Really? I have no problem with the word cunt but I also don’t think this fits in with the whole Christmas theme. Can you imagine a child saying “who reached number one, mummy?” And she replies “it was The Kunts darling”??

You think spice girls is decent music?

Alright then.

Youngatheart00 · 25/12/2021 10:55

I agree. In the days of CD sales (and tapes and records!) it meant something - in this streaming era it means nothing. Those LadBaby songs are just cheap, chavvy and awful.

WheelieBinPrincess · 25/12/2021 10:56

No child is going to say ‘who reached number one mummy?’ Anymore then they’d say ‘let’s take our tea in the drawing room’

It’s no longer very relevant.

It was X factor winners for years and years anyway, I can’t imagine it means much of anything anymore.

itwasntaparty · 25/12/2021 10:56

Completely irrelevant now.

Georgieporgiepuddinandpie · 25/12/2021 10:56

I cannot and I mean cannot ABIDE Ladbaby and their ridiculous videos. Yak yak yak

RedRobin100 · 25/12/2021 10:57

Oh years ago! Hardly new..

Teacupsandtoast · 25/12/2021 10:58

You do know that all the money from the downloads of the Ladbaby songs goes to the Trussell Trust foodbank charity? They've raised a HUGE amount and supported so many families - who cares if the songs are a bit rubbish?

^I agree. Just another thing that has been dumbed down.

LivingOnTheVeg · 25/12/2021 10:59

I’ve never even heard of LadBaby before this year, so I don’t know how I’ve missed the last three years! I agree, it seems cheap and tacky. Don’t think they’re particularly nice people either from what I’ve seen people say on Twitter this week.

The Millennium Prayer was at number one on 1 January 2000.
WheelieBinPrincess · 25/12/2021 11:01

Is Lad Baby that guy who does elaborate things like build forts in his house and the mum comes home and pretends to be outraged/surprised?

Cardboardeaux · 25/12/2021 11:02

Because Mr Blobby was high class?...

Whilst I can't disagree that the songs are often not the best given how much money they have raised for charity over the past 4 years by doing these songs I really don't think anyone can call them not very nice people. Hmm

I believe the upper classes call him Father Blobby, peasant!
x2boys · 25/12/2021 11:07

Got to better than all the sodding X factor Xmas number one and yeah they are doing it for charity so good for them.

No I did not know that. It still doesn’t change my opinion of the songs though.

Not heard the song, don't really listen to the charts anymore with Spotify and Amazon music, but I suppose at least it raises lots of money for the trussell food bank trust. Their hearts are in the right place. I know the mum talks a lot about coming from a place where she didn't know where their next meal was coming from and wants to help others. Can't bash them for that really.

Funnylittlefloozie · 25/12/2021 11:10

Slade and Wizzard were high class?

LemonViolet · 25/12/2021 11:10

YABU, it’s for charity. No one paid to stream the LadBaby song thinking “this is wonderful music”!!! It’s Christmas. It’s for charity. And 2 become 1 is a shit song as well btw.

Although I don’t think I’ve actually been interested in the Christmas number 1 since Killing In The Name Of, which was an ace year. Fab song, raised money for charity and fucked off Simon Cowell, triple score.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 25/12/2021 11:11

No I did not know that. It still doesn’t change my opinion of the songs though.

So what song would you rather have at number one at Christmas if one that's raised absolutely loads of money for charity is tacky? I'd far rather a daft song raising money for people who need help than someone singing a more worthy song making millions to line only their pockets.

LemonViolet · 25/12/2021 11:11

If you didn’t know it’s for charity then you have really missed the whole point!!!

clarepetal · 25/12/2021 11:13

I actually totally disagree. I love LadBaby and his wife, and I think they are doing a great job.

I'm not exactly sure what makes them real christmas songs, but i'd much rather a daft sausage roll song that actually mentions the word Christmas than the crap that is 2 become one. Grin

OldHip · 25/12/2021 11:14

Xmas number one is always shit. Previously was X factor, before that was usually Cliff, before that was jive bunny or frigging black lace. They're always novelty records or things that wouldn't otherwise sell. The only decent Xmas no 1 I can remember is Stay Another Day and I'm probably alone in liking that.
