To think the Christmas Number One has gone tacky and downhill?

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 10:53

I just saw that LadBaby has had its 4th Christmas number one single. Based on what? Tik tok and streaming views on YouTube? I haven’t heard the song and not going to bother but does anyone else think music these days is just low effort, cheap and bland? What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example.

Also saw that they had a rivalry to get to number one with a band called “The Kunts”. Really? I have no problem with the word cunt but I also don’t think this fits in with the whole Christmas theme. Can you imagine a child saying “who reached number one, mummy?” And she replies “it was The Kunts darling”??

Was agreeing until you mentioned the Spice Girls. Awful lol

UserError012345 · 25/12/2021 12:42

I think it's fab and approve much more than lining the pockets of some 'star' that won't ever need to use a food bank.

Tabbacus · 25/12/2021 12:43

I seem to remember loads of Christmas number ones being novelty or cheesy! I find ladbaby incredibly irritating, but their songs have raised a tonne for charity and I don't I don't they're claiming to being serious artists or anything. Good for them, 'serious' artists make plenty of money year round.

FrippEnos · 25/12/2021 12:47

The Christmas number 1 has not meant much since simon cowell devalued it to get his latest money making band from whatever tv "reality" show he devised.

And people forget what dross has been the Christmas number 1.

Stinkywizzleteets · 25/12/2021 12:49

I’m struggling to keep a straight face at the thought of the spice girls being a decent Christmas number one 😂😂😂

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 12:52

Why? It was a Christmassy song.

Is anyone else laughing at the idea 2 Become 1 was a decent Christmas number one?😂

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 25/12/2021 12:54

Ladbaby say all profits go to charity, so after everyone has taken their cut, everything else goes to charity.

The dad's a bit of an insufferable dickhead now tbh, years ago they used to be funny, but not anymore.

I wanted the Kunts to be no.1, I believe Ladbaby started on the Kunts saying "only a certain type of person" would download that song. Yeah me, someone that doesn't have a disconnect as to why we need food banks. And before anyone jumps on me I donate food and toiletries when I can.

I can't remember the last proper Christmas song, admittedly I haven't followed the charts for a long time. What was the last proper Christmas no. 1?

Bollocks2Covid · 25/12/2021 12:54

Cross post! In what way was it Christmassy? Go and listen to it! It was a song about Safe Sex 😂😂😂

MorningStarling · 25/12/2021 12:59

I was rooting for Boris Johnson is STILL a Fucking Cunt by The Kunts but it got stuck at number 5 (as did their effort last years, Boris Johnson is a Fucking Cunt). You can check the video out on their website, it's a parody of Doctorin' the Tardis by the Timelords aka The KLF aka The JAMs aka the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu aka K Foundation aka 2K aka K2 Plant Hire.

The #1 is just the usual so-called charity bollocks, self-serving smarmholes using "charity" to further their own ends and line their own pockets. At least the people behind Boris Johnson is STILL a Fucking Cunt don't use their own charitable donations as a lever to whore their records to the stupid.

The trouble with the charts including streaming is that the same shit floats to the top every Christmas, Mariah Carey et al. Last year Boris Johnson is a Fucking Cunt was the second best selling single but was only fifth in the charts, I imagine it's a similar situation this year.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 25/12/2021 13:13

The Xmas no. 1 has always been dominated by tacky rubbish. It's all just marketing. The public just buy what the industry serves up to them (same with pop charts in general tbf).

shinynewapple21 · 25/12/2021 13:24

I think the Christmas number one is meant to be tacky !!

LotusCheesecake · 25/12/2021 13:46

I'm glad there's another Kunts fan @MorningStarling, I was rooting for it too.

Well just one example:

Candlelight and soul forever
A dream of you and me together

And another:

Set your spirit free, it's the only way to be

OP posts:
SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 14:07

But just the song sounded Christmassy and there was snow in the video

OP posts:
SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 14:07

It’s clearly Christmas themed

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/12/2021 14:09

A non tacky Xmas no 1 is a rare thing. Not sure I can think of any tbh.

EmergencyHydrangea · 25/12/2021 14:12

Yeah, Mr Blobby was proper classy

christmaspombear · 25/12/2021 14:16

This Is why the Kunts single is infinitely better

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/ladbaby-christmas-number-1-the-kunts-b1980789.html%3famp

And the fact they don't use their single to promote and sell merchandise that lines their own pockets

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/12/2021 14:22

I’m not a fan of Ladbaby but they’ve raised thousands for the Trussell trust with their 4 Christmas singles so good for them!

Christmas novelty singles have been around for decades, so YABU to think it’s a recent thing. The Wombles, Mr Blobby, Bob the Builder, South Park etc

Spice Girls are hardly classy but at least are more memorable than the procession of X factor winners who went on to do nothing else with their career.

Christmas is tacky and cheesy and a bit of fun!

* They continued: “We may be vulgar in the language we use to get our point across but we would not be so vulgar as to use food banks to hawk records, increase our profile or sign lucrative sponsorship deals. Let me be clear, we would not stoop to using poverty, hunger and despair to promote our career like we believe LadBaby have done in this year’s Christmas number one campaign.”*

Kshhuxnxk · 25/12/2021 14:31

Spice girls money all went in their pockets which is fine. Ladbabys all goes to charity. I'll take a shitty tacky song in the charts (which I didn't know was still a thing) that makes all that money for charity!

Are the "Kunts" donating anything to charity themselves? Or just pissed off they didn't get to number one ?
RusholmeRuffian · 25/12/2021 14:36

I think you lost the argument at "Spice Girls" 🤣

Er, if that's the statement they've put out then they've absolutely stooped to using poverty, hunger and despair to promote themselves. They just haven't raised any money for them while doing it.
