To think the Christmas Number One has gone tacky and downhill?

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 10:53

I just saw that LadBaby has had its 4th Christmas number one single. Based on what? Tik tok and streaming views on YouTube? I haven’t heard the song and not going to bother but does anyone else think music these days is just low effort, cheap and bland? What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example.

Also saw that they had a rivalry to get to number one with a band called “The Kunts”. Really? I have no problem with the word cunt but I also don’t think this fits in with the whole Christmas theme. Can you imagine a child saying “who reached number one, mummy?” And she replies “it was The Kunts darling”??

I mean there has always been novelty songs, it’s nothing new. However I really can’t stand songs about sausage rolls.

RocketPanda · 25/12/2021 11:15

I'd rather a silly song that has meant millions will eat than a rich band/singer making yet more money.

WildRosie · 25/12/2021 11:16

The days of relevant Christmas number ones were over at least two decades ago. The decline will carry on relentlessly into deeper banality.

SituationCritical · 25/12/2021 11:17

The Spice Girls Grin

LubaLuca · 25/12/2021 11:20

It's never been the pinnacle of chart music sophistication Grin. What year was Bob the Builder Xmas number one?

I'm glad it's a charity record that has captured people's attention again. Good for them, they're doing a grand job of raising awareness.

Lemonysherbet · 25/12/2021 11:20

It's for charity!

Abraxan · 25/12/2021 11:21

Charity records have always been big sellers haven't they. Not sure this is much different.
I doubt most people actually sit and listen to them much, but pay to download them as part of their charity donation.

@DrSbaitso
*Cardboardeaux

Because Mr Blobby was high class?...

I believe the upper classes call him Father Blobby, peasant!*

Is calling him 'Mr' not an Americanism DrS ? Xmas Grin am sure they brought that term over. So vulgar and over familiar. Tish tosh!

CandyCaneLane0 · 25/12/2021 11:26

It's better than the X Factor getting it every year, and it's for charity

OldHip · 25/12/2021 11:26

Ok I have just looked up the list of Xmas number ones and the following are the only decent songs during the last 50 years:

  1. Rockabye
  2. Stay Another Day
  3. Don't You Want Me
  4. Another Brick In The Wall
  5. Merry Christmas Everybody
  6. Long Haired Lover From Liverpool*

*Hated/slated at the time, arguably due a rehabilitation

Echobelly · 25/12/2021 11:27

Xmas number 1s were always shite, but now it's always going to be novelty stuff because barely anyone is buying singles in any format, so the Xmas no1 will just always be an in-joke I think.

Ladbaby is cringe though it's true.

DailyMailHater · 25/12/2021 11:28

The lad baby songs have raised an amazing amount of money for The Trussel Trust in the last 4 years…..money that is then distributed to food banks all over the uk to help millions of people - it may be tacky and awful but I would rather a charity song than one that is lining the pockets of “pop stars” and record producers

Horst · 25/12/2021 11:36

I used to like lad baby when it was the Mrs wanted a stair gate so I chopped the door in have haha. Mrs wanted a baby Walker so I made one from plumbing pipe hahaha

Now they have a net worth over a million and make crappy sausage roll songs once a year to stay in the limelight they don’t do it for charity form the good of their hearts it keeps them relevant. I mean parents of year awards and all that rubbish for a couple of you tubers really.

Proudboomer · 25/12/2021 11:41

What is wrong with a bit of tat as Christmas?
It’s fun, raises money for The Trussle trust along with awareness that for many are still living in poverty.
You openly admit that you haven’t heard the song nor did you know it is 100% for charity.
Many you should get off your tinsel thrown and stop stabbing things you don’t know anthing about. or is tinsel to tacky for you as well?

I don’t understand the stabbing and the tinsel parts

The massive difference between now and even 20 years ago is that now it’s based on Spotify plays.

Back in the old days you had to actually go into a shop and buy the single. Now it’s just that something is played on your Spotify not that you have specifically asked for it but that it has come up. Look at the rest of the top ten, it’s mostly old Christmas songs that come up on Christmas playlists.

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 11:48

Even Maria Carey would be more preferable! At least it’s actually a Christmas themed song!

Precisely this.
Proudboomer · 25/12/2021 11:49

Stabbing should be slagging but my iPad doesn’t like that and auto corrected.

PriamFarrl · 25/12/2021 11:50

And thrown should be throne.

Sagaris · 25/12/2021 11:50

At least the LadBaby proceeds goes to food banks - which is more than can be said for the many X Factor winners that always got to number 1. The only beneficiary there was Simon Cowell!

Whinge · 25/12/2021 11:50

But you said What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example That doesn't mention Christmas. Confused

The sausage roll song mentions Christmas a lot. You're arguing about something you haven't even listened to. 🤦‍♀️

User135644 · 25/12/2021 11:51

It went that way about 20 years ago. Bob the Builder was Christmas number 1 in 2000. Soon enough it was X Factor every year.
