To think the Christmas Number One has gone tacky and downhill?

I just saw that LadBaby has had its 4th Christmas number one single. Based on what? Tik tok and streaming views on YouTube? I haven’t heard the song and not going to bother but does anyone else think music these days is just low effort, cheap and bland? What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example.

Also saw that they had a rivalry to get to number one with a band called “The Kunts”. Really? I have no problem with the word cunt but I also don’t think this fits in with the whole Christmas theme. Can you imagine a child saying “who reached number one, mummy?” And she replies “it was The Kunts darling”??

Nowt wrong with Mariah. Mariah never hurt anyone. Unlike StabBaby

Was watching a Christmas special last night from 1996 (OFAH). 2 Become 1 was on the radio in the background which made me feel all nostalgic.

We've lost that now.

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 11:54

@Sagaris

At least the LadBaby proceeds goes to food banks - which is more than can be said for the many X Factor winners that always got to number 1. The only beneficiary there was Simon Cowell!
They were all charity singles Confused

Agree with PP, Mr. Blobby by Noel Edmonds was the nadir, I don't think anything will manage to sink to those depths again....Grin

MonicaGellerBing · 25/12/2021 11:55

I can't abide LabBaby either. All their videos consist of her dancing like a twat in the background while the dad stares at the camera with faux shock. They are pathetic

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 11:55

But you said What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example That doesn't mention Christmas. confused

The video itself was Christmas themed and the song sounded Christmassy

The sausage roll song mentions Christmas a lot. You're arguing about something you haven't even listened to.

I’ve heard the other ones, it’s too shouty and tacky for a Christmas song imo

@Teacupsandtoast

You do know that all the money from the downloads of the Ladbaby songs goes to the Trussell Trust foodbank charity? They've raised a HUGE amount and supported so many families - who cares if the songs are a bit rubbish?
Exactly.

Better the money from a shit song goes where it will do some good instead of lining Simon Cowells pockets.

OldHip · 25/12/2021 11:57

StabBaby makes a lot of money for himself tho.

Pedalpushers · 25/12/2021 11:58

I think a charity novelty song reaching Xmas number one is very much the spirit of Christmas. Your issue about children hearing the Kunts is amusing as well considering the lyrics to 2 become 1 are extremely sexual.

Appalonia · 25/12/2021 11:58

Agree, they're rubbish. Fun fact tho, the best selling single of all time is Bing Crosby 's White Christmas!

OldHip · 25/12/2021 11:58

... which was never number one!!! 🤪🤪🤪

IsolaPribby · 25/12/2021 12:00

I don't particularly like the Lad Baby songs, but they are funny, and for charity. This year they are doing it with Ed Sheeran and Elton John, who have massively gone up in my estimations for not taking themselves too seriously!

2 Become 1 isn't a great piece of music but it's a nice, catchy pop song (remember them?) and it takes you back to that year when you hear it.

It's why Stay Another Day is always played now (another mid-90s Christmas number 1) because just having a nice, catchy song top of the charts around Christmas is a by-gone era now.

User135644 · 25/12/2021 12:01

At least it's got something in common then with today's music.

MrsDThomas · 25/12/2021 12:01

Charities or not. Its piss taking.

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 25/12/2021 12:03

I don’t like the songs but I love that they’re raising money for the Trussell Trust. Better than lining Cowell’s pockets.

Hendersonsisnotrelish · 25/12/2021 12:03

Why are people calling him stab baby? Has he stabbed someone?

OldHip · 25/12/2021 12:04

Ask Proudboomer. I don't make the rules!

HarrisonStickle · 25/12/2021 12:08

Whilst I can't disagree that the songs are often not the best given how much money they have raised for charity over the past 4 years by doing these songs I really don't think anyone can call them not very nice people.

I don't think you can necessarily equate raising lots of money for charity with being a nice person. People do these things for a variety of reasons.

elbea · 25/12/2021 12:09

In the news it said that the proceeds raised fund Christmas food parcels for 7,000 families. I’d rather something silly like that rather than another Simon cowell song.

I’m almost certain Bob the Builder was the Christmas number one in the 2000s, is it really much worse?

cherryonthecakes · 25/12/2021 12:11

Only people our age talk about Christmas number one now. I have teenagers and they wouldn't have a clue

JingleJangleJenny · 25/12/2021 12:18

It’s ironic that they say they’re donating proceeds to a foodbank when the song is about sausage rolls. I can’t stand the pair of them.

drpet49 · 25/12/2021 12:26

By saying they are doing it for charity guarantees them Christmas no.1 year after year. They can’t even be bothered to come up with new songs. Just talking about sausages rolls every year. Quite cynical really.

Tal45 · 25/12/2021 12:34

I prefer Ladbaby to X factor - or Mr Blobby, wasn't there even Bob the Builder one year??
Tinsel is chavvy though, in case anyone wasn't sure, it's right up there with those foil garlands and foil ceiling stars that everyone had in the 70's/80's and my son still loves.

Tal45 · 25/12/2021 12:37

Jimmy Saville for one......not that I'm suggesting they're anything like JS!! Just agreeing that raising money for charity isn't always a selfless act of kindness.
