To think the Christmas Number One has gone tacky and downhill?

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 10:53

I just saw that LadBaby has had its 4th Christmas number one single. Based on what? Tik tok and streaming views on YouTube? I haven’t heard the song and not going to bother but does anyone else think music these days is just low effort, cheap and bland? What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example.

Also saw that they had a rivalry to get to number one with a band called “The Kunts”. Really? I have no problem with the word cunt but I also don’t think this fits in with the whole Christmas theme. Can you imagine a child saying “who reached number one, mummy?” And she replies “it was The Kunts darling”??

In a statement shared with The Independent, The Kunts confirmed that they had made large donations to MIND and Cardiac Risk in the Young following the success of their song “Boris Johnson is a Fing C” in last year’s Christmas No 1 race. They said that they chose to donate like this rather than releasing a “charity single” to cut out “the large percentage accrued by record companies, sales platforms like Amazon and Apple, management, marketing and PR”.

@x2boys

Well that's fair enough .
x2boys · 25/12/2021 14:44

But to be fair ,Do they know it's Xmas ,didn't do Bob Geldofs career any harm ,but it also raised a hell of a lot of money ( and continues to raise money ) and publicity for the famine victims in Ethiopia .

youvegottenminuteslynn · 25/12/2021 14:44

@MrsDThomas

Charities or not. Its piss taking.
What is?
youvegottenminuteslynn · 25/12/2021 14:45

@drpet49

By saying they are doing it for charity guarantees them Christmas no.1 year after year. They can’t even be bothered to come up with new songs. Just talking about sausages rolls every year. Quite cynical really.
Elton John and Ed Sheeran's own song was also for charity and heavily promoted.
bunnyboilerx · 25/12/2021 14:46

Your right. Mr blobbys number one was so much better!

It's for charity and all the money goes to food banks rather than someone's bank account. Give them a break. I do think maybe next year they should do something else though. Wink

DrSbaitso · 25/12/2021 14:51

I'm not sure public mud slinging about who's the best at giving to charity is more edifying than just putting out a charity single. Anyone who bought the single COULD have just donated the money in full. And all of us COULD have just given all our unnecessary Christmas shopping money to charity. It's very nice to make a direct donation, but you'll never know how much more you COULD have potentially made through a charity single even if it had meant a cut going to all the people who had a hand in upping its sales. Any charity has people on its payroll.

Presumably they'd have received no criticism at all if they'd just made it a normal release?

Everyone who wanted to be a part of it has indirectly made a charity donation. Everyone who thinks it's vulgar and immoral has presumably made their own donation so as not to be outdone. Result, everyone feels virtuous and charities get money. Merry Christmas.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 25/12/2021 14:57

@IsolaPribby

I don't particularly like the Lad Baby songs, but they are funny, and for charity. This year they are doing it with Ed Sheeran and Elton John, who have massively gone up in my estimations for not taking themselves too seriously!

Especially as it made their original version drop to Number 2.

Don't understand the hate. It's a fun Christmas song for charity and love Ed Sheeran.

kokoalemon · 25/12/2021 15:04
Confused

Why does anyone feel strongly about LadBaby?

They’ve helped raise lots of money for food banks, great. If you don’t like their other content, fine.

Why so passionate about disliking them though?! They’ve obviously got an audience and if it isn’t you, so be it.

(I am in no way connected to LadBaby Grin I just don’t understand the strength of feeling against them…)

insancerre · 25/12/2021 15:06

Up the kunts!
I’m that certain sort of person who downloaded it last year
And he’s still a cunt this year

DrSbaitso · 25/12/2021 15:11

There were quite a few, I think.

ChrimboGateauxCatto · 25/12/2021 15:13

I don't care how tacky. I care they raise money for the Trussell trust.

antisocialsocialclub · 25/12/2021 15:23

There hasn’t been a decent Christmas song since the Darkness imo

thepeopleversuswork · 25/12/2021 15:39

I find it hilarious that people say LadBaby is tacky but the Spice Girls are the epitome of class.

I’m no massive fan of LadBaby but seriously they are much of a muchness: manufactured commercial pop. The idea that the Spice Girls represent some hallmark of quality made me spit my tea out.

Ilovesandwiches · 25/12/2021 15:52

Not unreasonable to dislike the music everyone has their own preference, but I don’t think it’s fair to slate them as people. They do so much to raise money for an amazing cause, and in my book doing a good deed which means people can eat is enough for me.

There is a WORLD of difference between the quality of the two songs, and I doubt you spat your tea out.

I’d rather LadBaby have number 1 singles and donate money to charity than the constant stream of shit X Factor winners we used to have.

You can only imagine my delight when KITN reached number 1!

whywouldntyou · 25/12/2021 16:54

@OldHip

Ok I have just looked up the list of Xmas number ones and the following are the only decent songs during the last 50 years:
  1. Rockabye
  2. Stay Another Day
  3. Don't You Want Me
  4. Another Brick In The Wall
  5. Merry Christmas Everybody
  6. Long Haired Lover From Liverpool*

*Hated/slated at the time, arguably due a rehabilitation

And I think the most recent was Stay Another Day which was 1994, 27 years ago. 😳 70s was the best era!
LampLighter414 · 25/12/2021 17:09

I don't like Ladbaby, their social media/YouTube content is complete dross. Fair play to them on doing charity songs although I can't help but think the motivation is to increase awareness of them and therefore their online followers and income streams.

Also its important to note that you'll actually do a lot more for a food bank by donating a few quid cash or food directly than streaming their awful song say 500 times (whilst driving yourself mad) or buying it for 99p from amazon

WhatScratch · 25/12/2021 17:15

’What about real Christmas number ones, like Spice Girls 2 Become 1 for example.’

You lost me there.

santaclothes · 25/12/2021 17:24

@Funnylittlefloozie

Slade and Wizzard were high class?

No, not as with OP example of the spice girls, they were musicians. Bands. Singers. Whether you like the music or not. Who on earth are 'Ladbaby' Hmm

SuperSange · 25/12/2021 17:35

I give you Christmas 1971; Ernie , the fastest milkman in the west.

😂😂😂

PlanetNormal · 25/12/2021 17:44

I have no idea who or what ‘LadBaby’ is but I do know that the last decent Christmas number one was Killing in the Name by Rage Against The Machine in 2009. Since then, it has been a procession of unlistenable dross.

Pawprintpaper · 25/12/2021 18:10

I was also impressed with Elton/Ed sheeran parodying their own song for charity.

I hated the X factor years, except for Alexandra Burke singing hallelujah.

MorningStarling · 25/12/2021 18:32

"I was also impressed with Elton/Ed Sheeran parodying their own song to flog more copies of it" would be more accurate.
