How can people eat fat?

I am willing to accept I may have some kind of issue here!

Some examples -

  • a bacon sandwich which has not had the fat cut off/ been very very well done so it's crispy
  • fat through steak
  • the white bits you get on chicken
  • white bits of fat through a burger/ any meat
  • pork belly 🤢
  • fatty/ jelly bit on a piece of diced chicken/ lamb
  • jelly fatty bits in sausages

I just had a duck spring roll and there was a chewy slimy horrible bit of fat in it - now I feel sick. They were from Waitrose too. 😂

I once asked my friend about this and she said she just eats round it/ ignores it.

But I find it absolutely disgusting and off putting. I rarely eat meat unless I've cooked it myself for this reason. Aibu?

I've tried buying the most expensive sausages/ organic chicken etc but there always seems to be fat in it. Does anyone else feel like this?

I love fat! It’s where all the taste is. Bit of salt… mmmm!

fairislecable · 24/12/2021 17:29

No

TragoCardboardCopper · 24/12/2021 17:29

Yes. It's the texture for me. That rubbery squidgy feel. I also can't eat mushrooms because they feel the same.

lastqueenofscotland · 24/12/2021 17:30

Do you eat anything with oil/butter/cheese? That’s really just fat.

Aprilx · 24/12/2021 17:30

I thought most people avoid eating the fat directly. Unless maybe it is crispy.

dudsville · 24/12/2021 17:30

I don't know if you have food issues, but I don't and it also turns my stomach, alongside skin, like chicken skin, bleurgh! I remember having steaks long ago with someone and u was cutting the fat off whilst one in my company happily chewed it. I've never forgotten this 20 years on!

christmaspombear · 24/12/2021 17:30

Fat on lamb chops or steak is the best but as long as it's been rendered properly

Or the fat underneath crackling or on the top of gammon or bacon fat... mmmm 😂

legalseagull · 24/12/2021 17:31

Agree. It makes me heave.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:34

Queen yes I eat all of that! I think it must be the texture. It's annoying.

The white bits on chicken are tendons arent they? Crispy fat can be really nice, pork crackling, bacon bits, burnt chicken skin. Lumps of white fat, deipping and gristle are gross.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/12/2021 17:35

If it's rendered down properly that is where the flavour is, if it's not it slimy and blerk.

APurpleSquirrel · 24/12/2021 17:36

My brother once said I missed my calling as a surgeon by the amount of precision I use in cutting off fat, sinew & grisle off my food Grin I'm with you - I have to take fat off bacon etc; though I can eat sausages etc.

JuniorMint · 24/12/2021 17:36

I’m a vegetarian and the way you feel about fat is how I feel about all meat.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:36

April Yes I think most people avoid it, however, if they unexpectedly eat/ chew a bit they're normally okay.
I have to stop eating and try to stop myself from being sick/ thinking about it. Really makes me feel so sick.

My Grandad used to take the fat everyone else had cut off e.g. a chop from our plates and eat it. "Waste no want not"

I agree about the texture of a global of fat, but it's actually the fat in most meat that makes it taste good. E.g a skinless (very low fat) chicken breast is fairly tasteless

lljkk · 24/12/2021 17:36

Fat is flavour...
Tbh, I'm not a fan of fatty meat either. But veg cooked in lard, ff yogurt or cheese, crisps, yum!!

Davros · 24/12/2021 17:37

Love a bit of meat fat. The back of a rib of beef, chicken skin, pork scratchings etc

AdaColeman · 24/12/2021 17:38

Do you not eat butter or cream? They are fat too.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/12/2021 17:39

I'm the same as you OP. Can't eat even a little bit.

Was in a sarnie shop a couple of years ago where they do hot roast pork. A woman came in and asked for a sarnie of ONLY THE FAT! They asked her to clarify as it's such an odd request and she wasn't English so they thought they'd misheard.
Nope, she wanted just the fat in a bread cake. Demolished it as soon as they handed it over and ordered another.

Smartiepants79 · 24/12/2021 17:39

Depends how it’s cooked.
But fat is one of the main flavour component in meat dishes.
Gristle is a different thing. That’s the bit that is chewy and gross.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:40

Yes sorry I should have said not fat or fatty food in general - I can eat all the crisps/ chips haha - just actual bits of fat.

Purple - I'm the same with cutting everything off. I end up with more in the bin than on my plate.

I do enjoy the taste of sausages, but I inspect them as i am eating and chew very slowly just in case which removes the enjoyment somewhat. 😂

Ask Mrs Sprat, she was married to Jack...

BananaSpanner · 24/12/2021 17:40

Because pork crackling and roast chicken skin are delicious!

VaguelyInteresting · 24/12/2021 17:40

Fat is flavour- but it does need to either be rendered properly or used during cooking then removed.

You need to watch Salt. Fat. Acid. Heat.

Immaculatemisconception · 24/12/2021 17:40
