How can people eat fat?

I am willing to accept I may have some kind of issue here!

Some examples -

  • a bacon sandwich which has not had the fat cut off/ been very very well done so it's crispy
  • fat through steak
  • the white bits you get on chicken
  • white bits of fat through a burger/ any meat
  • pork belly 🤢
  • fatty/ jelly bit on a piece of diced chicken/ lamb
  • jelly fatty bits in sausages

I just had a duck spring roll and there was a chewy slimy horrible bit of fat in it - now I feel sick. They were from Waitrose too. 😂

I once asked my friend about this and she said she just eats round it/ ignores it.

But I find it absolutely disgusting and off putting. I rarely eat meat unless I've cooked it myself for this reason. Aibu?

I've tried buying the most expensive sausages/ organic chicken etc but there always seems to be fat in it. Does anyone else feel like this?

Haha hi 👯‍♀️ @AngelinaFibres

Yes to the silently gagging. I'd never show it or be impolite but I just can't help it.

Oh god the word "sinews" makes me 🤢

Try frankfurters, they're basically smoothied meat before they are sausages. Never find a blob of fat in those. I don't like gristle or fat lumps but I just spit it out on a tissue and carry on. It doesn't bother me to ruin a meal usually. Meat being tough and chewy though, that can ruin a meal for me.

Xmasprrssiehelp · 24/12/2021 19:25

Don’t come to Yorkshire, we collect the fat from beef roasts and have it on bread. You can’t go to a family gathering without it..

YouKilledOinker · 24/12/2021 19:25

@JohnSmithDrive

My Grandad used to take the fat everyone else had cut off e.g. a chop from our plates and eat it. "Waste no want not"

I agree about the texture of a global of fat, but it's actually the fat in most meat that makes it taste good. E.g a skinless (very low fat) chicken breast is fairly tasteless

I do the same given half a chance. It's where all the flavour is. Generally, meat will be tough and tasteless if there is no fat or skin on it. I would totally become a vegetarian if I felt like that about meat (I'm not being snipey, I would love to become a vegetarian, but I'm an addicted carnivore)
AngelinaFibres · 24/12/2021 19:25

@EishetChayil

Meat fat makes me feel nauseous. Anything to do with meat - gristle, stringy bits, fat, bones.... blergh. I've been a vegetarian since I left home.
Absolutely with you. Can't bear it when you bite down on something and it 'bounces' under your teeth. ShockShockShock

Yes but then the tissue is there and I know it's there and what's hiding in it. EnvyEnvy

Get over yourself fat is delicious! Especially pork belly!

oviraptor21 · 24/12/2021 19:32

Belly pork 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋

TroysMammy · 24/12/2021 19:32

I'll never forget as a child seeing my Auntie scoffing wobbly, pale fat off boiled bacon and saying "this is the best bit". Bleurgh.

godmum56 · 24/12/2021 19:34

why do people eat fat? because they like it.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 19:48

Haha Heart I want to get over myself! I don't want to be so fussy about it 🤪

I don't enjoy meat fat at all. Chicken skin, bacon rind, pork belly, any type of lamb, it's all vile to me. I even drain all the fat away from mince when it is cooked and place sausages/burgers on kitchen roll before eating them to absorb as much grease as possible.

There's some strange reactions in this thread though. Why the need for 'get over yourself'? It's just someone's preference. It's no reflection on your preferences so there's no need to be so defensive.

CountessofWilmington · 24/12/2021 20:58

Depends on the fat.

If it’s a huge lump of springy, jelly-like fat then yeah, horrible.

If it’s well cooked, soft and properly rendered, then it’s beautiful. In fact most pieces of meat would be hideously dry without it.

Also - bread and dripping!

KA30 · 24/12/2021 21:08

Me too op. I can't deal with fatty bits either. When I was younger I did avoid any meat if it had fat. Now I'm older I do try and cut around it a bit more. Growing up my family loved the fatty bits and it just disgusted me!

I spend a long time picking out meats for the leaner cuts 😅

I can eat bacon at home with the fat on if it's practically been burnt and crispy. I will not order anything with bacon outside the home knowing it's never cooked enough for my liking 🤢

frogswimming · 24/12/2021 21:10

Ewww I agree with you I hate claggy slimy fat. Especially when still white like on bacon .

Northernsoullover · 24/12/2021 21:14

@PartyPrawnRingGames

I remember a story by James Herriot from All creatures great and small, about being given a big piece of home cured farmhouse bacon that was basically just a slab of fat which he hated, to avoid being rude he forced it down very thickly smeared in spicy piccalilli. He found it a bit of an ordeal but the farmers wife was very flattered by how much he liked her piccalilli.
I remember this vividly too. Hilarious. Brilliant books.
BrieAndChilli · 24/12/2021 21:21

I’m the same as you OP and can only really enjoy meat in dishes if I have cooked it my self so know I have cut every single speck of fat off it before binging in the curry etc. The second I chew a bit of fat that most people would probably eat it puts me off eating any more of the meat.
DD is a veggie but I can’t stand the meat substitute stuff either!

8dpwoah · 24/12/2021 21:28

Absolutely yes to everyone who won't eat bacon unless they've cooked it (to crunchy level) themselves. "Do you want a bacon sandwich?" No, sorry, can't risk it being squelchy.

But the experience left him hating fat even more...and ruined piccalilli for him too!
ChippyDucks150 · 24/12/2021 21:30

Yip,.I agree. It's vile. I remember refusing to eat minced beef in the 80s (before extra lean mince etc) because of the 'bouncy bits', and I was about 8. I can't stand it.

DogsandCatsB4u · 24/12/2021 21:31

I don’t usually eat it but my dad loves it. Some people just like it.
I don’t mind it on lamb chops though and I love chicken skin

frogswimming · 24/12/2021 21:32

For this reason I buy 5% mince, bacon medallions (even though I'm paying more for less meatGrin) and substitute chicken breasts for thighs. I also buy Irish style sausages which have a smoother texture with no bits of fat in.

I love meat and don't find it dry or tasteless without fat. Luckily my dh is exactly the same.

Another thing I don't like for the same reason is egg white - bleurgh - all that white wobbliness. I do like meringues and scrambled eggs though. But I cut off the white from a fried or poached egg. Boiled not too bad.

I also like turkey whereas most people find it dry and tasteless apparently. So - happy day for me tomorrow!

Pythonesque · 24/12/2021 21:34

Sorry if it's a duplicate, I've only scanned part of hte thread. But has anyone mentioned the nursery rhyme "Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean...."

(I'm with those who enjoy fat, as long as it's appropriately cooked. Melt in the mouth yumminess)

StayingHoHoHome · 24/12/2021 21:39

I was like this, over the years I went off more and more meats. Turns out I only liked it when it wasn't too meaty. I became a veggie and when I have any meat substitutes it's so nice as I enjoy all of it, no worry about a chewy bit or a fatty bit and no animals were harmed, so bonus Smile
