How can people eat fat?

I am willing to accept I may have some kind of issue here!

Some examples -

  • a bacon sandwich which has not had the fat cut off/ been very very well done so it's crispy
  • fat through steak
  • the white bits you get on chicken
  • white bits of fat through a burger/ any meat
  • pork belly 🤢
  • fatty/ jelly bit on a piece of diced chicken/ lamb
  • jelly fatty bits in sausages

I just had a duck spring roll and there was a chewy slimy horrible bit of fat in it - now I feel sick. They were from Waitrose too. 😂

I once asked my friend about this and she said she just eats round it/ ignores it.

But I find it absolutely disgusting and off putting. I rarely eat meat unless I've cooked it myself for this reason. Aibu?

I've tried buying the most expensive sausages/ organic chicken etc but there always seems to be fat in it. Does anyone else feel like this?

@JuniorMint

I’m a vegetarian and the way you feel about fat is how I feel about all meat.
no one asked
Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:42

Smartie yes, that makes sense. Even the smallest piece of gristle will put me off a whole meal.

wobbly fat
or even worse stringy sinewy bits.
chicken wings or feet

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:42

@PissedOffNeighbour22

I'm the same as you OP. Can't eat even a little bit.

Was in a sarnie shop a couple of years ago where they do hot roast pork. A woman came in and asked for a sarnie of ONLY THE FAT! They asked her to clarify as it's such an odd request and she wasn't English so they thought they'd misheard.
Nope, she wanted just the fat in a bread cake. Demolished it as soon as they handed it over and ordered another.

Oh god 🤢🤢🤢😂

The best bit on a pork chop is the fatty bit at the end.

As long as fat is rendered off properly, it's delicious.

Don't like fatty steak though, no matter how rendered it is, and only like crispy duck in pancakes.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/12/2021 17:43

Do you not eat olive oil or any other oil? That's fat too.

Chocolate? Fat.

Ice cream? Fat again.

itwasntaparty · 24/12/2021 17:43

Jack sprat could eat no fat...

I can't bear it, it has to be properly crispy and delicious for me to eat it. My mum would eat bacon rinds for fun.

WorraLiberty · 24/12/2021 17:43

I love fat, especially steak fat.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 24/12/2021 17:43

I love fat on meat. It's the best bit. I dislike lean meat. It's normally dry and flavourless. I can't bear chicken breasts for that reason. It's like chewing a rubber sponge.

Sadly I have high blood pressure so have to watch my diet so my days of slicing some juicy cooked fat off a joint of lamb or pork and eating it with a bit of salt (cooks perks) are far behind me but I remember them fondly.

GemmaRuby · 24/12/2021 17:44

YANBU.
Crispy bacon fat - yes. Flabby white animal fat in any form no.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:44

When you say "rendered off" what does that actually mean? Well cooked so it's not chewy/ slimy? Would it not just taste burnt?

I don’t eat any meat but I agree, the fat is the worst part of a rancid package! I find the whole concept of eating flesh repulsive.

ufucoffee · 24/12/2021 17:45

I love fat. I love raw bacon fat.

CatsOperatingInGangs · 24/12/2021 17:45

It depends on the fat OP.

Every Christmas I treat myself to a pot of old fashioned pork dripping. It’s delicious spread in good white bread with salt and pepper.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 24/12/2021 17:48

crispy fat = ✓
(bacon rind, pork crackling, chicken skin)
wobbly fat = x

bantuknots73 · 24/12/2021 17:48

The fat on bacon is😍😍

When I was pregnant, DP made me a bacon and egg sandwich. The first thing I said is, 'where's the fat?!' Turns out he dropped both bits of fat on the floor when he was picking up the bacon from the pan🙃 I was livid. I honestly live for the fat on bacon

Georgeskitchen · 24/12/2021 17:49

I don't eat much meat but when I do I remove any fat for my eagerly awaiting feline friend 😆

YenniferOfVengaBus · 24/12/2021 17:50

It tastes good.

I do think that to an extent it depends on the quality of the meat though.

It’s a delicacy in some cuisines. In Italy they cure strips of fatback with herbs and spices and slice it thinly to serve.

It’s called Lardo and one of the most famous and prized types is called Lardo di Colonnata. Guinciale is mostly fat too.

How do you feel about things like salami or pepperoni on pizza? They have a pretty high fat content.

Pedalpushers · 24/12/2021 17:53

I'd prefer not to but I don't have this strong a reaction to it. It's just another part of my food.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:56

Yennifer I actually do enjoy a pepperoni pizza. However, once I ate a bit of pepperoni that had a larger than normal piece of fat in it that got stuck in my teeth and that was it, couldn't eat the rest. Now I am extra careful and inspect every slice.

To pps yes the wobbly fat is the worst.

Bacon rolls in restaurants - they're never cooked properly - there's always white wobbly fat and people seem to eat and enjoy it. I almost wish I could too!!

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 17:57

Pedal Yes, that's what I mean. I wish I could be like that and not let it ruin my meal.

hm1610 · 24/12/2021 17:57

YABU - it's the best bit!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/12/2021 18:01

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Chocolate? Fat.

Ice cream? Fat again.

Do you like black pudding? Well then you'll obviously like drinking a gallon of warm pig blood.out

It's. Not. The. Same!

LrrrRulerOfOmicronPerceI8 · 24/12/2021 18:01

I think it's more of a sensory problem with it, I've been told probably a hundred times "fat is flavour" but I genuinely struggle to not be sick if I touch beef fat or chicken skin etc so really can't say how it tastes tbh but then I also can't stomach bananas because of their texture 🤮
Although why does it offend people that others don't like it?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/12/2021 18:02

You might like chocolate, cake or biscuits. Or really soft pasta. Or a chocolate freakshake, made with oreos, bars of chocolate, sweetened whipped cream, syrup, marshmallows and other shite on top.

I'd be sick if I had to eat any of those. So I don't. But I don't expect everybody to be like me because people like different things.
