How can people eat fat?

I am willing to accept I may have some kind of issue here!

Some examples -

  • a bacon sandwich which has not had the fat cut off/ been very very well done so it's crispy
  • fat through steak
  • the white bits you get on chicken
  • white bits of fat through a burger/ any meat
  • pork belly 🤢
  • fatty/ jelly bit on a piece of diced chicken/ lamb
  • jelly fatty bits in sausages

I just had a duck spring roll and there was a chewy slimy horrible bit of fat in it - now I feel sick. They were from Waitrose too. 😂

I once asked my friend about this and she said she just eats round it/ ignores it.

But I find it absolutely disgusting and off putting. I rarely eat meat unless I've cooked it myself for this reason. Aibu?

I've tried buying the most expensive sausages/ organic chicken etc but there always seems to be fat in it. Does anyone else feel like this?

I'm the same. It makes me heave.

As a child my parents nicknamed me Quincy (remember that?) due to the level of dissection of my meals.

HedyPrism · 24/12/2021 18:05

The fat is the BEST. Lardo... mmmm

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 24/12/2021 18:08

I’m with you OP I hate any fat it makes me feel sick if I eat some by mistake and really puts me off eating the rest of my meal. My Dad loves it and my Grandpa lived on it. He always used to have dripping on toast for breakfast.

Suzi888 · 24/12/2021 18:08

Are you expecting an totally fat free animal? I’d consider going vegan. Animals usually have fat! Or buy free range- skinnier.

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 24/12/2021 18:15

I'm the same op and too wish I wasn't. I wish I could order a bacon roll without asking for it to be extra crispy then still end up ripping half of it out haha. Takes the ease and enjoyment out of it for me personally.

Comedycook · 24/12/2021 18:18

Gristle and sinew and chewy bits are rank. Proper fat is gorgeous and full of flavour. If I buy very expensive good quality steak I cut off a bit of raw fat and eat it! Blush

DrSbaitso · 24/12/2021 18:18

I feel that way about meat. I guess it's just that some things repel me and don't repel other people.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/12/2021 18:20

Fat is the best bit, BUT needs cooked properly.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 18:22

Hahahah @Comedycook is it not really chewy though? Or is it all about the flavour? Maybe I should try that 😂
@OmgIThinkILikeYou** yes, exactly!!! Even when you ask for it VERY VERY well done it never is.

I was in a fancy hotel last year and asked for the bacon on my breakfast to be very well cooked. They must have thought I'd said the opposite (how and why?!?!) and it came out barely cooked. I couldn't even look at the plate. 😭

I feel the same about meat in general. Maybe try being vegetarian, the you won't have this problem.

PivotPivotPivottt · 24/12/2021 18:22

I hate pigs in blankets for this reason 🤮

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 18:23

I actually was veggie for 10 years. Maybe that's partly why, I've just never really got used to it.

Beef dripping on toast with salt. Lush

Comedycook · 24/12/2021 18:25

On very expensive good quality steak, it's not chewy...It's waxy and tastes like cream. I love it! I won't recommend anyone else does it as I have no idea of its safe or not...!

AnnieAreYouOkHun · 24/12/2021 18:28

It's gross but delicious!

Offmyfence · 24/12/2021 18:32

@ThoseFestiveLights

I love fat! It’s where all the taste is. Bit of salt… mmmm!
Agreed
chocolateorangeinhaler · 24/12/2021 18:32

Yuk no I hate fat. I once craved a rib of beef as it is supposed to be such an expensive cut. It was awful I spent so long cutttevery tiny bit of fat away from the meat it went cold. Ditto ham and bacon I would heave at eating the rubbery slimy fat.

PartyPrawnRingGames · 24/12/2021 18:33

I remember a story by James Herriot from All creatures great and small, about being given a big piece of home cured farmhouse bacon that was basically just a slab of fat which he hated, to avoid being rude he forced it down very thickly smeared in spicy piccalilli. He found it a bit of an ordeal but the farmers wife was very flattered by how much he liked her piccalilli.

Justkeeppedaling · 24/12/2021 18:34

Meat isn't nearly so tasty now they've bred all the fat out of pigs and cows.

BelieveInRainbows · 24/12/2021 18:36

I'm with you OP. Love bacon fat as long as it is super crispy but that's all. DH takes all the chewy fatty bits that I reject Grin

Wrongkindofovercoat · 24/12/2021 18:36

I am a Mrs Sprat, I love the fat from bacon, chops and steak, but it has to be rendered properly, not just a chunk of flacid white stuff.

KohlaParasaurus · 24/12/2021 18:37

I have a problem with the texture of fat in meat, and also with spongy meat products like sausage (including some veggie sausages) and meatballs, and it really, really annoys me because I don't want to be the sort of person who leaves a pile of fat at the side of their plate or pulls a bacon sandwich apart to remove the fat from the bacon. Fortunately, my DH is like, "I'll have the fat if you don't want it."

Blackmagicqueen · 24/12/2021 18:38

I’m with you op, it’s disgusting and precisely why I can’t eat a bacon sandwich I haven’t personally made. I buy the leanest bacon I can find and then cut all the fat off before cooking it; that’s the only way I can eat it.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 18:39

Kohla yes, it's that "spongy" texture. I also hate leaving the fat at the side of the plate - especially in a restaurant. So, now I just don't risk it.

Grimchmas · 24/12/2021 18:39

Mm bacon cooked until it's so crispy it snaps, you can only do that with the rind on Xmas Grin

I can't understand the attraction of pork belly. It's mainly wobby fat! I completely accept that some people think it's delicious, but it's one of the very few foods I can't bring myself to even try!
