How can people eat fat?

I am willing to accept I may have some kind of issue here!

Some examples -

  • a bacon sandwich which has not had the fat cut off/ been very very well done so it's crispy
  • fat through steak
  • the white bits you get on chicken
  • white bits of fat through a burger/ any meat
  • pork belly 🤢
  • fatty/ jelly bit on a piece of diced chicken/ lamb
  • jelly fatty bits in sausages

I just had a duck spring roll and there was a chewy slimy horrible bit of fat in it - now I feel sick. They were from Waitrose too. 😂

I once asked my friend about this and she said she just eats round it/ ignores it.

But I find it absolutely disgusting and off putting. I rarely eat meat unless I've cooked it myself for this reason. Aibu?

I've tried buying the most expensive sausages/ organic chicken etc but there always seems to be fat in it. Does anyone else feel like this?

@PissedOffNeighbour22

I'm the same as you OP. Can't eat even a little bit.

Was in a sarnie shop a couple of years ago where they do hot roast pork. A woman came in and asked for a sarnie of ONLY THE FAT! They asked her to clarify as it's such an odd request and she wasn't English so they thought they'd misheard.
Nope, she wanted just the fat in a bread cake. Demolished it as soon as they handed it over and ordered another.

Was she from Eastern Europe? Quite common there. My Russian friends made me eat slices of raw bacon, just the fatty part, on bread along with raw onion. Definitely an acquired taste but with good quality meat (just think Hungarian mangalitsa pig) can be surprisingly tasty. My dad says these were considered foresters lunches where he grew up in East Prussia.
8dpwoah · 24/12/2021 18:41

Totally with you OP. Fat, gristle etc all really put me off the rest of my food if I accidentally chomp on any. No issue if I notice it and cut it off/out, and I leave it on for cooking, but if it's not crispy crackling or bacon rind I'm repulsed by it. I think this is why I don't eat much meat tbh.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 24/12/2021 18:43

I've always avoided meat sandwiches since the time (decades ago) when I bit into one and my teeth bounced on the gristle...

CounsellorTroi · 24/12/2021 18:44

Bacon rolls in restaurants - they're never cooked properly - there's always white wobbly fat and people seem to eat and enjoy it. I almost wish I could too!!

The bacon in hotel breakfasts is never properly cooked either and always too thickly sliced for my liking. I only eat bacon I’ve bought and cooked myself.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 18:45

Aghhhhhhh @ProfessionalWeirdo don't!! 😂😂😂 that's my worst nightmare.

I only ever buy cheese sandwiches if I need a pre packed one. Boring I know.

CounsellorTroi · 24/12/2021 18:48

Yes I only buy cheese sandwiches. Or egg mayo.

PraiseTheSunshine · 24/12/2021 18:48

I'm exactly the same, the idea of eating it turns my stomach.

Agreed. I think I cook bacon about 10x longer than most hotels/ restaurants!

I take it you never had a dripping butty OP Grin

God I LOVED my nannas Sunday roast dripping butty....

Luxembourgmama · 24/12/2021 18:50

I agree wobbly fat is horrific

NigellaBangBangTurkey · 24/12/2021 18:53

Yanbu, its gooey, slimy grossness, like eating giant snotty bogeys. Bleh!!

Won't eat meat off the bone for all the shitty bits.

Felicit1 · 24/12/2021 18:53

I'm so glad I'm not as alone as I thought I was 😆🤪

@LrrrRulerOfOmicronPerceI8

I think it's more of a sensory problem with it, I've been told probably a hundred times "fat is flavour" but I genuinely struggle to not be sick if I touch beef fat or chicken skin etc so really can't say how it tastes tbh but then I also can't stomach bananas because of their texture 🤮 Although why does it offend people that others don't like it?
It doesn't offend me that people don't like it - I don't eat any meat at all - but I do really hate seeing people dissect their meat, pulling off the fast and digging out tiny bits of gristle. I find it really stomach-churning. So while it doesn't offend me, I do wish that everyone who ate meat ate all of it.
BurntO · 24/12/2021 18:54

I dunno OP. I find it gross but I find eating meat gross so I can’t offer any rationale. Some people like it 🤷🏼‍♀️

nordica · 24/12/2021 18:55

This is one of the reasons I'm vegetarian, there's nothing like that in vegetarian food.

Titsywoo · 24/12/2021 18:55

I love fat if it is well rendered. A well cooked piece of pork belly is amazing. It isn't chewy at all just melts in your mouth.

BetsyBigNose · 24/12/2021 18:57

I feel exactly the same as you @Felicit1. Luckily (?) my DH loves things like crackling and bacon fat, so he's always happy to claim it from my plate after I've removed every visible scrap!

I'd never eat a bacon sandwich anyone other than me had cooked, as I'd be embarrassed my the lengths I go to in the 'removal process'. I used to get told off as a child for "wasting food" when I'd remove all the fat on a pork chop - there's simply no way I could put it in my mouth, let alone chew and swallow it! Envy(not envy)

MrsBerthaRochester · 24/12/2021 19:05

Yabvu. I love fat, its where all the taste is. My friend takes the fat off her bacon and lamb chops and gives it to me. Yum.

You are my twin. Hello. Can't bear fat. Never order meat when eating out. Would never have a bacon sandwich that I hadn't made myself. Other people eating fat makes me silently gag.
EishetChayil · 24/12/2021 19:11

Meat fat makes me feel nauseous. Anything to do with meat - gristle, stringy bits, fat, bones.... blergh. I've been a vegetarian since I left home.

mingetout · 24/12/2021 19:12

Yanbu, it’s disgusting

Holothane · 24/12/2021 19:15

Due to days being forced to eat grisly fatty stew at boarding school my bacon must be crispy any that isn’t is cut off, example on a steak gristle mince doesn’t exist in our house. Used to buy the leanest.

AngelinaFibres · 24/12/2021 19:15

So many TV chefs/cooks do recipes with chicken thighs. Oh god they are disgusting. Can't watch people eating them when the sinews bounce back. The only purpose of a chicken leg is to transport the living chicken from point A to point B
