to ask how much wine you’d buy in this situation

NB - this is a LIGHTHEARTED thread

DH went to do the Christmas food shop today. I told him what I needed for the pudding and said ‘can you get a fair bit of wine as I want a drink tonight, tomorrow and we need for Christmas Day’.

On CD we’re having PIL. So 4 adults. FIL will have one glass of bubbles. MIL, DH and I all drink but not to excess.

I like a drink but don’t drink masses or that but I do like it and DH drinks rarely.

Given this information how much sparkling wine would you buy?

As reminder sparkling wine for:

Me tonight
Me tomorrow
4 adults on CD

Once I’ve had a few answers I’ll divulge how many DH bought.

Between 6 and 12 ... nothing worse than running out of wine when people are having a good time, depends how early you start on CD really, if starting mid-morning CD then at least 2 bottles per person

I'll be on my own and don't really drink, but I still got two bottles of wine and a bottle of prosecco,

So I would say probably 12. At least.

Like you, OP, I’d have bought 8. I wouldn’t have expected to drink them all, but I’d rather over cater than run out.

I’d put 6 in my trolley then worry it wasn’t enough and go back for another 2, start to walk away then think actually 6 will be plenty so go to put two back, then think actually seeing as I’m here I’ll keep one extra bottle. Then on the way to the till I’d be berating myself for putting that 1 bottle back and end up running back for it and an extra one for my troubles/luck. So in answer to your question in your situation I would buy 9 bottles of wine.

Who drinks half a bottle of wine between two? Are these people the same ones who write into magazines suggesting you freeze the last remnants of a bottle in an ice cube tray for stock cubes?

It’s Christmas. It should have been 12 bottles. I account for people dropping in for drinks and to have a spare for people I’ve forgot to buy bought for.

Xmas day we have 10 adults who all drink and no one is driving. I got 6 bottles champagne, 24 bottles of red and 12 of white! Panicked I didn't have enough so got another 12 today! It will not go off and New Year is next week.

I would have got 8.
But I asked my DP for fun, and he said 3. Half each day for you, and half for every one else for CD.
He obvs thinks like your DP.

Sainsbury's have (I think) 25% off 6 bottles so if that was an option the right answer here would be 12 because it's 9 but with 3 free? Merry Christmas

For those of you saying fizz has to be drunk the same day it's opened, not true. You can get fizz stoppers or a teaspoon in the bottle works well. I know this from experience

This thread made me laugh...we had weekend drinks...only 7 of us drink wine....I bought 24,, there were 6 left after it...it won't go off in the fridge 🤪

I’d have bought 2 mini bottles - one for today and one for tomorrow - plus 2 full size ones for Christmas Day. So probably a similar amount to your husband.

I can't really drink fizzy things so maybe 2 Prosecco for CD and at least 6-8 bottles of red or other wine.

To be honest we've accidentally over ordered and have 3 bottles of Prosecco up the cupboard plus at least 20 bottles of red and there's only 2 of us that drink. It should last us through January but we'll see.
