to ask how much wine you’d buy in this situation

NB - this is a LIGHTHEARTED thread

DH went to do the Christmas food shop today. I told him what I needed for the pudding and said ‘can you get a fair bit of wine as I want a drink tonight, tomorrow and we need for Christmas Day’.

On CD we’re having PIL. So 4 adults. FIL will have one glass of bubbles. MIL, DH and I all drink but not to excess.

I like a drink but don’t drink masses or that but I do like it and DH drinks rarely.

Given this information how much sparkling wine would you buy?

As reminder sparkling wine for:

Me tonight
Me tomorrow
4 adults on CD

Once I’ve had a few answers I’ll divulge how many DH bought.

Me tonight 0.5
Me tomorrow 0.5
4 adults on CD 4×0.5=2

So I'd say 3

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 24/12/2021 19:29

@Merryoldgoat depends how much cheese you've got to eat with it... an evening ? 😂

More seriously it does last well if you treat it carefully. It doesn't really spoil

Merryoldgoat · 24/12/2021 19:31

@DaphneDeloresMoorhead

If it was open last Christmas and not open since can I risk it?

doadeer · 24/12/2021 19:32

I would have got 4. But then we live just off a high street so never without.

Scottsy100 · 24/12/2021 19:34

3 😳 yeah he’s definitely booze blind, does he not drink? I’d get through a bottle in a night just me, let alone Xmas day drinking 😂

Bunnyfuller · 24/12/2021 19:46

A LOT.

(Is my answer, regardless of the situation).

Bleachmycloths · 24/12/2021 19:49

6 bottles minimum. There might be some left over but it’s awful when you run out

Owl55 · 24/12/2021 19:56

It used to drive me mad when I asked my husband to do the same , he would but 24 lagers and 1 bottle of wine and 2 bottles of coke for the kids !!! 😱

NeverEndingFireworks · 24/12/2021 20:01

forgot. parsnips. OMG

I bought spares of parsnips and sprouts - just in case 🤣

Mylittlepea · 24/12/2021 20:02

I’d go for a case - 12 bottles. Nothing worse than running out of wine or fizz. It has no sell by date😉

Merryoldgoat · 24/12/2021 20:08

@NeverEndingFireworks

I honestly couldn’t believe it. Thank god there were some left!

He has, however, done all the prep for dinner tomorrow already, bathed the kids and passed me a box of Lindor

Case of 6 As it’s cheaper but is probably have a small bottle of fancy gin and some tonic in too to mix it up as don’t like just doing Prosecco /cava

TiredyMcTired · 24/12/2021 21:27

Fucking hell, I feel like a right old lush now I’ve read what other people think is reasonable booze to have in stock for Christmas. We’ve got 1 expensive champagne, 5 bottles of Cava, 4 bottles of red wine, 2 bottles of rose, 1 bottle of white wine, 1 bottle gin, 1 bottle vodka, 2 bottles of port, 1 bottle disaronno, 1 bottle whisky, crate of cider and crate of lager. It’s only me, DH and MIL on Xmas day and she’s nearly 80 so only has a little tipple. My son has lots of soft drinks (he’s 13).
Mind you, it will probably last us 6 months… Wink

Justrestingmyeyes1 · 24/12/2021 21:36

There will be 10 of us on CD. We have 10 white, 10 red, 6 champagne plus beer and spirits. But we are lushes 😂😂😂😂

I polished off two bottles last night. I’m gonna crack another one now whilst I finish the Christmas pottering with a podcast in.

TiredyMcTired · 24/12/2021 21:40

Oo, forgot the 2 bottles of Baileys Blush

Snaketime · 24/12/2021 22:13

I'm not much of a drinker and I can't stand wine, but I would have said at least 5, I read your opening comment to my DH and asked how many he thought he said 3 Grin

Bellie710 · 24/12/2021 22:59

@Merryoldgoat

How long does an open bottle of port last?
Who doesn't finish the bottle???
BourbonScreams · 24/12/2021 23:25

I'm with your DH I would've bought three. I'll have to make sure I double check if I'm ever buying drinks for someone then Smile

Yes

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/12/2021 00:54

4 bottles fizz
2 white wine
2 red wine

At least this!

But to be sure, and bearing in mind wine often comes in 6s, I might get 6 fix, 3 red and 3 white. But the above as a minimum

I did too. I read that you like a drink, but not to excess, and that's me, so I thought half a bottle per person per day sounded right. Assumed you'd have a bottle of Baileys or something similar in as well.
BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/12/2021 08:27

Christ, I bought more than three bottles and a) that’s just for me because b) I’m not cooking Christmas lunch or hosting.

Wine under purchasing AND forgetting the parsnips? Divorce is the only way.

(And have we really got this far down a thread before anyone has galloped in to tell us all that we are all alcoholics for having more than a small bottle of sherry between 20 for the entire Christmas period? Grin )
