to ask how much wine you’d buy in this situation

NB - this is a LIGHTHEARTED thread

DH went to do the Christmas food shop today. I told him what I needed for the pudding and said ‘can you get a fair bit of wine as I want a drink tonight, tomorrow and we need for Christmas Day’.

On CD we’re having PIL. So 4 adults. FIL will have one glass of bubbles. MIL, DH and I all drink but not to excess.

I like a drink but don’t drink masses or that but I do like it and DH drinks rarely.

Given this information how much sparkling wine would you buy?

As reminder sparkling wine for:

Me tonight
Me tomorrow
4 adults on CD

Once I’ve had a few answers I’ll divulge how many DH bought.

6 at absolute minimum. It's not like its going to go to waste if it's not drunk on Christmas day.

FingersofFish · 23/12/2021 19:40

I've skipped down to give my answer and will read whole thread in a min. I'd go for 8 as assuming others will bring some bubbles on the big day.

This is a lie I'd buy 12 to be on the safe side, it'll save if not used!

FingersofFish · 23/12/2021 19:44

@Merryoldgoat

I LOVE YOU ALL!

Three. He bought THREE bottles of Prosecco.

I’d have got 8 as it will last.

We are not short of money. He is not in ANY WAY tight. He just has a strange blind spot with booze.

I’ll go to coop tomorrow and buy a few more, no biggie.

But it’s like he’s forgotten who he’s married to!

Lol 3?! My husband doesn't drink and I'm not a big wine drinker but 3 is basically part of our monthly shop if there's a space on the wine rack. I'd prob have got 12 when asda had the 25% off 6 offer.
Mummy1232016 · 23/12/2021 19:44

4

Redcrayons · 23/12/2021 19:44

I’d have gone 6 at a minimum. Maybe 10/12 if theres an offer on.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 23/12/2021 19:44

between 6-12, I love Prosecco and gin, vodka and whiskey. Im very spiritual :)

Merryoldgoat · 23/12/2021 19:45

@FingersofFish 🤣🤣

I woul dget 3 or 4, the 4th would be my 'just in case we need it' bottle. That would be half for this evening, half for tomorrow, 2 for Christmas day and 1 spare.

thefirstmrsrochester · 23/12/2021 19:46

See differences in perception about what a ‘lot of wine’ is between DH and I is why I’m responsible for the booze ordering. 3 cases from laithwaites came yesterday.

Merryoldgoat · 23/12/2021 19:46

I’m not sure I’ve ever started such a fast moving thread!

Booze will always do it!

I suppose he was probably thinking I’d not have much drinking time between inhaling cheese and Ferrero Rocher 🤔

OP posts:
tillytoodles1 · 23/12/2021 19:48

At least 6, but probably 8.

Caspianberg · 23/12/2021 19:49

I would have bought 3 as well

1 for tonight and tomorrow (1/2 a bottle per night)
1 for Christmas with lunch
1 spare

Tbf you did say your dh doesn’t really drink, and fil will have 1 glass max. And that you aren’t a big drinker.

MummyGummy · 23/12/2021 19:49

3 would be enough for us, that’s half a bottle per person, plenty if you’re not used to drinking loads.

thenightsky · 23/12/2021 19:50

I'd say at least 6. Probably 8 as there's nothing worse than running out, plus people drink more if eating alongside.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/12/2021 19:50
@Icenii

It’s very strange, I can drink gin or sparkling wine wholesale and be fine the next day (within reason!) but give me two large white wines and I’d be in a state. One red and I’d possible end up with a migraine.

I can’t do hangovers as I have my two boys but a little cloudiness is ok.
Have you tried biodynamic wine? It’s an absolute game changer. The sulphites is mostly what gives a hangover, try a biodynamic wine and you’ll feel so much better the next day

thedarkling · 23/12/2021 19:50

I would buy ten bottles 😬

Treaclepie19 · 23/12/2021 19:51

Before we knew the answer I guessed that you were expecting 3 bottles and he bought at least 6.
I would've got at least 6!

cjpark · 23/12/2021 19:51

Probably 7 - 3 fizz, 2 red and 2 white. Thats a glass of fizz and 3 glasses of wine each on CD, plus 2 bottle for you in the run up.

Merryoldgoat · 23/12/2021 19:52

@ShirleyPhallus

I will look some out! That sound great!

OP posts:
Thebearneccessities · 23/12/2021 19:52

I would have at least 10 bottles, they will not go 'off " if you don't use them.

Shamoo · 23/12/2021 19:53

I’d have got four, on the basis that sparkling can’t last overnight. One for you today, one for you tomorrow, two for Christmas Day. But I’m not a big drinker so the idea that anybody would drink more than a whole bottle themselves in a day is genuinely mindblowing (not in a remotely judgmental way, just wouldn’t expect it - I see I am clearly in the minority though). But if he’s not a drinker, I see where he’s coming from!

On Christmas Day it sounds like two of the adults won’t drink much (your DH and FIL) so I would have thought two bottles enough.

We live and learn 😂

ColettesEarrings · 23/12/2021 19:53

@Merryoldgoat Two counties north, but the mite the merrier! We're currently wrapping cherished presents whilst watching Die Hard and drinking bottle number two..

ImInStealthMode · 23/12/2021 19:54

Yikes OP. I bought 6 bottles of red and a number of beers on Wednesday, bearing in mind there's 2 of us and we're out all day Christmas Eve.

One of them accidentally got drunk already, so I replaced it on the way home today Blush

user1471457751 · 23/12/2021 19:55

I would have said 3 or 4 with the expectation you would split 1 over tonight and tomorrow and then had 2 for Christmas day, given you said fil would only have a glass and the rest of you are not big drinkers

But given you know he always buys less than you want, why did you not just tell him you wanted x number of bottles?
