to ask how much wine you’d buy in this situation

NB - this is a LIGHTHEARTED thread

DH went to do the Christmas food shop today. I told him what I needed for the pudding and said ‘can you get a fair bit of wine as I want a drink tonight, tomorrow and we need for Christmas Day’.

On CD we’re having PIL. So 4 adults. FIL will have one glass of bubbles. MIL, DH and I all drink but not to excess.

I like a drink but don’t drink masses or that but I do like it and DH drinks rarely.

Given this information how much sparkling wine would you buy?

As reminder sparkling wine for:

Me tonight
Me tomorrow
4 adults on CD

Once I’ve had a few answers I’ll divulge how many DH bought.

Probably 12. There's usually some sort of offer on 12 and NYE is coming up.

Better to cover yourselves!

SockFluffInTheBath · 23/12/2021 19:27

Based on you saying:

I would also have bought 3. You say none of you drink a lot so 2 glasses each sitting? That’s a bottle to cover you tonight snd tomorrow, and 2 for Christmas day. If you’re doing a bottle a night by yourself then you’re not drinking ‘not a lot’.

RevolutionRadio · 23/12/2021 19:28

I'd have got 6 minimum, probably 8 to be safe.

I'd be sending him back to the shop!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/12/2021 19:28

Who buys 10 bottles?

Those bags hold six.

So at least 12.

slowtik · 23/12/2021 19:29

8-9 maybe 10. Just to be sure

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/12/2021 19:29

Although I’m married to donkey who bought three bottles when the 25% off 6 bottles deal was on in Tesco 🙄

Merryoldgoat · 23/12/2021 19:29

@SockFluffInTheBath

I suppose I don’t drink ‘frequently’ is more accurate. I tend to drink about twice a month and then not very much. But on occasion I get ‘on it’ and Christmas is one of those times.

I’d say 6 too

FatCatSkinnyRat · 23/12/2021 19:30

Yay - I said three! Good man.

To be honest you did not ask him to cater for "just in case" or later parties, you asked him for those specific events.

Can you report back and let us know how many you got through on the three days you planned?

Now I am worried people think I am stingy with wine provision, so I have to clarify!

I am a regular party giver and would never of course not have enough in the house for a party and then some - I have a proper underground wine cellar of 600+ bottles but I do have to calculate how many to get cold before a party and I am telling you the ratio of half a bottle per person pretty much always works for groups of 10 or more. I was guessing a bit with this and in hindsight thinking of dinner parties we can usually get through a bottle each. But none of you sounded like ragers in your OP.

We and our friends are late 40s / early 50s so I guess not young, maybe youngsters go harder.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/12/2021 19:30

I find it more odd you didn’t have any in to start with! I find it really weird when people buy a bottle to drink then and there and not have some in stock. What happens if you fancy a drink, do you go to the shop every time?!

PermanentTemporary · 23/12/2021 19:32

Three, thinking I was being generous Grin I'm your dh obv.

granny24 · 23/12/2021 19:32

Fried egg and sauce you are my kind of hostess. Have a happy Christmas with enough wine for all.

Merryoldgoat · 23/12/2021 19:33

@ShirleyPhallus

I honestly don’t drink that frequently. I have spirits so can always rustle up a g&t or rum and Coke but don’t have wine as a rule.

I am thinking hard and I genuinely can’t remember when I last drank prior to tonight…

Ah ok, 12 then Xmas Grin

ColettesEarrings · 23/12/2021 19:35

Ahem. We bought three CASES, so 18, to do two of us from today till NYD. I know, we're raging alcoholics that will surely go to hell. Whatever. 😂

Icenii · 23/12/2021 19:36

I'd say 6. Are people driving Christmas day?

I'd love a glass now but just get awful hangovers. I'd be no use tomorrow if I drank a bottle. Use to be fine 5 years ago.

😂

I see he bought three, the silly fool. I would’ve gone with eight or nine myself, hate the idea of running out, I wouldn’t want to have to say no to guests.
I do have a wine/fizz cupboard full to the brim tho. I like to be prepared Grin

I was thinking 3 🙈

Merryoldgoat · 23/12/2021 19:39

@Icenii

It’s very strange, I can drink gin or sparkling wine wholesale and be fine the next day (within reason!) but give me two large white wines and I’d be in a state. One red and I’d possible end up with a migraine.

I can’t do hangovers as I have my two boys but a little cloudiness is ok.
