Johnson knows his job's on the line.

There are estimated to be around 70 Tory MPs in the anti-restrictions Covid Recovery Group. It only takes 55 of them to send in letters of no confidence to the 1922 committee to trigger a leadership election.

He will only put restrictions in place when he gets to the point that he considers that the consequences for his leadership will be worse if he doesn't impose restrictions than if he does.

He's more concerned with his job than in the lives - or health - of voters.

Tal45 · 22/12/2021 18:44

Read on the BBC today that the data out of SA was that it did seem to be milder. I wish they'd just make a decision, we go to see all my family 300 miles away a few days after Christmas and have no idea if we'll be able to see them or not. Didn't see them last Christmas due to covid, didn't see them the year before as dad was too ill. It's just awful for my ds who is desperate to see them.

sweetheartyparty · 22/12/2021 18:44

They would have to recall parliament which won't be until 29th at the earlier IMO. BJ will not risk another revolt by his own backbenchers as surely he will be finished. I can't see them taking kindly to cutting their Christmas break to vote on laws they don't agree with. He will have to rely on the opposition for support and that will make him look incredibly weak. He will put it off for longer than necessary

MarshaBradyo · 22/12/2021 18:46

Imperial - is the data they got today

Here’s some of it

No idea what it will mean in terms of restrictions though

But it was being waited on according to various scientists

To think it might be quite useful if they TOLD us if / what restrictions will be imposed from 26th
Sunsetsupernova · 22/12/2021 18:49

@Hellocatshome where did you buy that if you don’t mind me asking?

This.

Restrictions are even more relevant for those of us who tested positive for COVID and have had Christmas ruined - with our own freedom day being either 29 Dec or Boxing Day now, depending on tests. You can laugh at PP but my mum is tying herself in knots about when to defrost the food beef joint!!

jgw1 · 22/12/2021 18:51

@Francienolan

It always makes me laugh a little when people say to ignore the rules on these threads. Shall I break into my local pub and pull myself a pint then? Grin
Ask yourself what Boris would do. And then you will know to break into the pub.
Hellocatshome · 22/12/2021 18:52

@Sunsetsupernova sorry I was being a bit vague its actually a swimming day camp with an Olympic swimmer (not Adam Peaty who charges a fortune!) if you have a swimmer I can DM you the details.

Icequeen01 · 22/12/2021 18:53

Well I am having to send my elderly mum to stay with my sister who is 200 miles away on Xmas Eve as I have Covid and will still be in isolation. I will need to drive 200 miles on 28th to pick her up and hope to stay with my DSis until 30th as all our Xmas plans were buggered up. Hopefully they won't restrict travelling again as I need to get my mum home for her medication as she hasn't got enough to last her any longer than 30th!

LakieLady · 22/12/2021 18:53

Pmsl.

DahliaMacNamara · 22/12/2021 18:54

Yes, it bloody would. We usually have a quiet Christmas and see friends and family between Christmas and New Year. We normally keep it flexible to accommodate various people working Christmas shift patterns. We also have a significant family event that's meant to be happening in early January, but what with different cross-border restrictions that looks likely to be down the pan as well. Most of the people involved are on the cautious side and would 100% comply with any regulations.
I can probably write off anything that isn't happening within my own four walls, I reckon. But I'd rather not have the uncertainty, and I don't want to be the one crying off at this stage.

Fuckedoffisanunderstatement · 22/12/2021 18:54

Do we think they will shut down travel?

Kitsinthehood · 22/12/2021 18:56

We're away at a posh hotel from the 24th to the 28th so if they bring restrictions in Boris can sod off. Unless the hotel chuck us out we'll be there until the end of our stay thanks.

NewbieAlert · 22/12/2021 18:56

@Waxonwaxoff0

YANBU. We go away on the 27th, I'd rather know now if I can't go.
Same. So tired of my kids being let down because of the restrictions. This is rescheduled from last year when we saw no one at Christmas and couldn’t go on our holiday.
jgw1 · 22/12/2021 18:58

@Fuckedoffisanunderstatement

Do we think they will shut down travel?
It was made quite clear in the run up to Freedom Day in July that the relaxation of changes was irreversible. Reintroducing restrictions would go the very heart of the integrity and trust we have in our leaders and so they would not promise us Freedom Day and then go back on it.
Doris86 · 22/12/2021 18:58

@Grimchmas

Nobody else just think they're having to wait for data? Omnicron is still so new and so little is known about it. A more cautious government might know they're going for a lockdown on 26th but ours is most likely trying their hardest to put that off and avoid it if at all possible.
Agreed. The data is still feeding through about how severe Omicron is (though largely positive news so far). They could tell us now there will be restrictions from the 26th, only for it to then be unnecessary once they get new data through.
Firkinhavinalaugh · 22/12/2021 19:02

Let’s be realistic - how can they allow people to go and visit friends and family but not feasibly allow them to return. This is not like going abroad where you would have to suddenly isolate in a hotel.

They will not curb travel, there might be less due to less staff isolating but that is it.

jgw1 · 22/12/2021 19:02

Think of the furore if we were promised restrictions and they weren't needed. It would be mayhem.

Sunsetsupernova · 22/12/2021 19:04

@Hellocatshome ahh no I was thinking of a tennis player actually but good to know these things exist, off to have a Google

Bubblty · 22/12/2021 19:05

I know. They don't seem to get people like to plan things in advance

jgw1 · 22/12/2021 19:07

Well Boris never plans in advance - hence having so many children.
Beachhuts90 · 22/12/2021 19:09

This is our situation too. Won't even get to see the family we planned on having come in from overseas but it would be nice to still keep up post Christmas plans with family and the nice restaurants we have booked for next week to cheer ourselves up after a horrible horrible December.

RBKB · 22/12/2021 19:11

@jgw1 to be fair....this virus is hugely unpredictable and I think most people understand that politicians can't be held to 'no more restrictions, ever'. I'm no fan of this bunch of muppets but would completely accept restrictions for the community's sake if the data points that way...although dear god they better not shut schools (child protection issues and depression amongst teens make this an utter last resport in my view!)

But.....Wales have managed to say what is happening on the 26th! I just see this as yet more English govt failing to act in time, because, let's face it, they don't really care about us oiks anyway.

You are not being unreasonable. It would be nice to know. BUT, they don’t yet have the data to impose lockdown & further restrictions, which in turn damages business (and jobs etc ..). I’d rather they not impose anything until they have to, rather than ‘the data isn’t there to prove we need it, but let’s do it anyway so people can plan’.
(Rather than Scotland and wales who have imposed further restrictions, even though the data doesn't really warrant it!).

I agree with this
