@Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername

Who said there were restrictions coming in from the 26th? Have I missed a Boris speech ?
No, you haven't. It's simply that it will be the usual 2 weeks and another podium briefing can be expected.

But that won't stop the mad speculation or the lack of crystal ball. After all, they could come and tell us that the stats indicate a levelling off...

Lorriestakingppe · 22/12/2021 17:17

you need to act quickly

Unless it's really mild, which they don't know yet ...

actiongirl1978 · 22/12/2021 17:17

@Foolsrule I'd far rather the Govt would wait and see rather than implementing restrictions like Scotland and Wales.

Hunderland · 22/12/2021 17:18

We have a trip to London and hotel booked just after Christmas...also would like to know now as we can cancel the hotel up to Christmas Day Confused

arethereanyleftatall · 22/12/2021 17:20

Daily cases rising aren't what we're waiting for - we know this spreads like a bugger. What we don't know yet is if it's as mild as the common cold or not.
Hopefully, since this is what virus's do, it's mutated to spread easier and not kill the host - so in the virus's best interest, and thankfully ours.

dreamingbohemian · 22/12/2021 17:24

Any serious new restrictions have to be approved by parliament apparently and it takes 48 hours to recall them, so I think there would be at least that much notice for people to get home?

I feel so sorry for all of you in limbo! It's so rotten.

Immaculatemisconception · 22/12/2021 17:30

They don’t know, they haven’t got a crystal ball.

Claudethecat · 22/12/2021 17:32

If you have a look at what the rest of the UK is doing that might give you an idea of the likely direction of travel for England?

RonaLisa · 22/12/2021 17:33

@Foolsrule

It’s ridiculous. Just look at the figures on the BBC news site this morning. More cases than any other European country, the WHO claiming Armageddon is coming and the UK carries on, merrily doing nothing (and reduces isolation times 🙄). Meanwhile, our European counterparts are taking action because as we saw in 2020, you need to act quickly…
Armageddon has been predicted many, many times.

Funnily, it has never come to pass.

(And I am no supporter of this shitty government and their shitty lockdowns).

Exhausteddog · 22/12/2021 17:39

Although in a lot of instances it wouldn't be too bad to have 100,000s of cases if its very mild, if enough people of working age have to isolate at the same time that, that could mean essential services (not just the NHS) can not function properly. (All emergency services, utilities, fuel, broadband, food supply etc)

maddening · 22/12/2021 17:39

I think it would be ridiculous to move before hospital cases really rise, the graphs are showing steady at the moment.

Anecdotally- a friend works on a covid ward, they have 34 patients - all unvaccinated. Am happy for people to take their choices, support autonomy, but think it is ridiculous to lock the country down, most of whom are vaccinated due to those choosing not to vaccinate.

Echobelly · 22/12/2021 17:40

I don't think restrictions are necessarily coming in on 26th, but some time between then and new year likely. Yes, it would be helpful to know - we don't have any big plans, and oldest's camp after Xmas has already been cancelled, but we could potentially move some family meetings to Xmas or boxing day (we don't celebrate) if we have warning.

It sounds like strongest likelihoods are either a 2-week tight firebreak or a longer 'Level 2' (what we had from about April/May I think?) - though I would imagine a firebreak would probably still have to be followed by Level 2.

The government is just crossing its fingers that it gets some data that says Omicron will peak quickly so they can get on with BAU and the NHS might cope, but they're not going to get that as there isn't anywhere with the same demographics and vaccination levels that's ahead of us and will give any applicable data.

colourfulpuddles · 22/12/2021 17:41

It doesn’t matter what the restrictions are. Just ignore them.

I think this is most logical post.

The fastest timeline I can imagine is:
they recall parliament, say on Boxing Day to come in on Monday 27th to vote on restrictions to start on the 28th.

So 26 & 27th plans should be fine. 28th onwards in doubt but…with the cabinet as split as it is, I very much doubt it’ll be a full on lockdown like before. More like what Wales & Scotland are doing.

Which I know means buggering up some peoples plans.

And that’s the fastest timeline, bearing in mind 27th and 28th are officially bank holidays, the house wouldn’t usually sit, so could push to recall for the 29th.

I’d be very unsure of any NYE plans personally (not that I have any other than drinking and staying indoors anyway).

EasyLifer · 22/12/2021 17:49

YANBU, I know we have been told that no restrictions for Christmas but many people don't just have family gatherings on the 25th and 26th. We are still hosting or visiting family on the 27th, 28th and NYE and nobody knows whether to do a food/drink shop its very discombobulating!

whynotwhatknot · 22/12/2021 17:54

i wouldnt say its quiet between xmaqs and new year at all-alot of people plan to se family go out as they have time off work

so we need to know if we got to go round cancelling things

Heathofhares · 22/12/2021 17:54

@Florin

It’s driving us mad. We have a beautiful £150 piece of beef due to come out of the freezer for a family get together on the 28th, do we get it out on the 25th to defrost or not!
£150 for a joint! What is it a whole cow

—misses point of thread—

Purplegurple · 22/12/2021 17:56

I come out of isolation on the 29th (covid positive). After not seeing my family now for two Christmases it would be nice if I knew if I could make solid plans or not.

Akrotiri1 · 22/12/2021 17:56

I am glad to live in Wales, at least we know where we stand from boxing day on (unless of course they change their minds again at the last minute!).

jgw1 · 22/12/2021 17:58

@Mumoblue

YANBU. Seems like they want to make announcements after Christmas for popularity reasons. Just tell us now! I’m perfectly content to follow new rules, but I’d like to know what they are in advance!
Boris is a straight talking man of the people, he never does anything for popularity reasons, don't be so ridiculous. The reason that there are going to be no new restrictions before Christmas is because the evidence does not support them.
lightisnotwhite · 22/12/2021 18:01

I think they’ll say no more than 3 households and be careful. Now they’ve reduced isolation time they are gradually easing off restrictions.

New restrictions are going to be debated by parliament. But Ministers can still introduce them before that debate as they did last time. Its just if parliament votes against them, then they would have to be withdrawn.

Hello Carrie.
MrsTophamHat · 22/12/2021 18:06

I know what you mean but I do think they are really avoiding restricting anything more than they have to. There is cautious hope that cases are not sky rocketing in the way that was predicted.

CovidCurious · 22/12/2021 18:07

Because of the way the bank holidays fall this year, a lot of people (us included) will have made plans that include 27th and 28th. Our plans are reliant on hotels being open and hospitality being able to feed us indoors. Judging by what the other nations have done I'm hopeful that England will not go full lockdown, but who we see and when may depend on whether there are restrictions on numbers of persons or numbers of households meeting and what those restrictions are.
