I have guests coming for the 25th...but they need to know if they can catch the first trains home on the 27th.....

YANBU. We're away staying with family 24th-26th, but we're supposed to be hosting other family from 30th-2nd and I really want to know if they'll be allowed to come!

MorningStarling · 22/12/2021 18:16

YABU. Experience has shown that if they announce things in advance, people jump on them because if it's justified next week then why are they being so reckless as to not introduce them now. Yet if they don't, people complain they can't plan.

They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. In those circumstances they may as well wait until the last minute, that way they'll have more data to make a decision.

The public get the politicians they deserve.

baggies · 22/12/2021 18:18

I think it's political reasons that the village idiot hasn't announced anything. He's so in fear for his job and weak position that he daren't announce restrictions before Christmas. I wish Chris Whitty would do any announcements in future because I don't believe a word that comes out of any of the mouths of the government.

Babyroobs · 22/12/2021 18:19

Anyone think weddings will be stopped? I'm holding off buying a last minute outfit for a wedding that is supposed to be on 27th !

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/12/2021 18:19

@Grimchmas

Nobody else just think they're having to wait for data? Omnicron is still so new and so little is known about it. A more cautious government might know they're going for a lockdown on 26th but ours is most likely trying their hardest to put that off and avoid it if at all possible.
Quite

I wonder if they are going on what has happened in S.A. which rose steeply to start then steadied and now is falling. The vast majority are mild cases with the few that have been hospitalised being made up of 75% unvaccinated people.

There was a very interesting discussion on Jeremy Vine this morning, which I normally avoid like the plague, with a S.A. doctor who really did seem to know her stuff.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/12/2021 18:22

Boris is a straight talking man of the people, he never does anything for popularity reasons, don't be so ridiculous.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 22/12/2021 18:22

Thanks @Waxonwaxoff0. I have had several big jobs (within big, well known organisations) cancel from the 27th Dec. Its not looking good is it?

TheFairyCaravan · 22/12/2021 18:24

DS2 and DDIL are coming to us after work on 28th December. They’re working Christmas Day, as they did last year. The Govt can get to fuck if they think I’m missing out on Christmas with him again. We did it in May this year. They’re nurses, why should all those working not see their families, too?

DS1 is deployed so it’s not like we’ve got him home either.

MarshaBradyo · 22/12/2021 18:24

I’m keen to know too but new data just in today that will help inform

I heard that too. It was slightly more bearable that it was someone standing in for JV instead of him!
There was a female Dr from SA and another South African (male) but I didn't hear in what capacity he was being interviewed.

Chloemol · 22/12/2021 18:26

I reckon it’s tomorrow and will be the same as the other three nations

What a rude way to describe Keir Starmer.

Luckily Boris is Prime Minister and making an excellent job of it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/12/2021 18:27

@Exhausteddog

It did leave me feeling cautiously optimistic that Omincron may not be as bad as is feared, and I agree it was more bearable without JV. I usually avoid it as it feels like a radio version of the Daily Fail!!

AgeingDoc · 22/12/2021 18:28

I think that the government is trying to curry favour with the population by "saving Christmas" but it's just putting off the inevitable and most people would actually prefer to have a bit of notice of impending restrictions. Looking at the rising numbers of cases I can't see how a new lockdown of some type can be avoided and personally I'd rather be told sooner than later.

Data re how mild was being waited on
MiniCooperLover · 22/12/2021 18:30

Even if they bring them in most likely they'd say 'in 3 days' or whatever rather than immediately because they'd surely have to give anyone away from home time to travel back?

I think they're keeping things uncertain on purpose.

So that people desperate to have a life and not afraid to gamble a bit will keep their plans till the last minute (= good for businesses)

Whereas people who are more risk adverse (COVID-risk, or just "last minute disruption to your carefully crafted plans" risk) will cancel their social plans (= good for public health)

The government can't be blamed directly for whatever people choose to do, but can (and will) take credit one way or another when they eventually make their announcement.

It's shitty leadership, obviously. Massive opportunity costs when all personal plans are in a quantum state till the last second.

Hugoslavia · 22/12/2021 18:34

But you are asking a man with a chaotic and hoc (who doesn't even know how many children he has) to actually do something organised and useful! Are you forgetting how last year he let half the schools go back for 1 day before announcing that the schools would be closed at 8pm the night before! He's beyond useless!

Maybe but there really is uncertainty, if you listen to Farrar Wellcome Trust / SAGE and expectation on data. Which has just come in re mildness
RBKB · 22/12/2021 18:38

@Mumoblue I agree. I think they know now what thry are gonna do.

It always makes me laugh a little when people say to ignore the rules on these threads. Shall I break into my local pub and pull myself a pint then? Grin

@Hugoslavia so true. And he's obviously fine...I expect the 500 invites have already gone out for HIS NYE party 🤣🤣
