To have opened the door

Went to a restaurant this eve, was busier than I expected and all tables were randomly put together to form 2 king table so we were sat next to total strangers… wasn’t expecting that. So I opened up the door near us to get some fresh air in, checked with waitress they agreed. A lady went and closed it, so I opened it again and then she closed it again… so I opened it!

@Cantfindausernamethatsnottaken

If schools and buses have to have windows open I do think all public areas should have fresh air circulating.I would not have sat in that particular area with strangers though.The restaurant should be maximising customers space,not pushing people together.
I work in school. Yes, I'm freezing and in pain a lot of the day. If I go,out for a meal and order said meal whilst in a comfortable temperature I don't then expect it to be freezing with a door open by the time it has arrived.
Hope478 · 20/12/2021 10:07

@OnceuponaRainbow18

It wasn’t freezing draft! It was a door ajar!

Blimey no wonder our covid numbers are fucked if people can’t see the benefits of fresh air

Your ajar door causing a draft has saved the country from covid. Well done, you absolute hero.
Abraxan · 20/12/2021 10:07

@Snowmanuel

Where in the country are you, OP? Everyone’s saying ‘it’s freezing out’ but where I am it’s 13 degrees. Which is really mild. I got hot in my coat earlier.
I'm in South Yorkshire. It was 1 degree last night, about 3-4 degrees in the afternoon, with light drizzle and heavy fog.
Singinghollybob · 20/12/2021 10:08

If you didn't like the arrangements already in place, you should have left

Abraxan · 20/12/2021 10:10

@BoredZelda

Why would anyone want to sit in the cold and eat their tea.

Have you read the guidance on ventilation?

Isn't it to purge with fresh air for 5-10. Inured each hour? Rather than have the door wide open all night?
Hope478 · 20/12/2021 10:10

It's plain stupid if OP thinks that having a draft will prevent covid and clearly thinks they are better than everyone else who chose to eat out that night Hmm

Icebreaker99 · 20/12/2021 10:11

@JinglingHellsBells yes I have heard the advice, my point was in the situation the OP was describing with tables so close together and the restaurant busy then opening a door is as about as much use as the advice to "duck and cover" was during a potential nuclear bomb, i.e. if she thought the seating was a risk the sensible thing to do would have just been to leave!

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 20/12/2021 10:12

@Hope478

It really isn’t stupid to think fresh air is better than inhaling other people’s… in fact it’s pretty stupid to not realise that 2 years later

Snowmanuel · 20/12/2021 10:12

It’s draught, not draft.

Has the OP actually said where they are? I think Australia possibly. Grin I drove up from Oxford yesterday and it was thick fog and about 5 degrees in the afternoon.
Ticksallboxes · 20/12/2021 10:17

I would have asked you to leave!

Clearly not. I don't want open doors all night when eating.

As I'm sure you know I was answering a PP's question which mentioned that where they were the temperature was in double figures. Along with other posters I remarked that in other parts if the country it was much colder, so yes - very cold, almost freezing.

Why you decided to highlight my post answering this rather than other posters, or indeed the original poster who stated it was much warmer in their location, I dint know,

MrsLarry · 20/12/2021 10:43

You sound really petty

DappyApple · 20/12/2021 11:12

SW England so to be fair it was pretty chilly!!

Come on op you are contradicting yourself now!

Pretty chilly and freezing cold are very different IMO

OP wanted to be congratulated that they saved Christmas for all those people and how stupid they are for wanting to eat inside in the warmth. Who would have thought booking a seat inside would have meant sharing the room with strangers.

OP do yourself and others a favour and eat outside next time. I feel so sorry for the other diners.

Sparklingbrook · 20/12/2021 11:59

I wouldn't want to eat my dinner feeling 'pretty chilly' to be honest. Nor sitting next to strangers. Or people entering the door opening and closing Olympics. Recipe for indigestion.

I went out for lunch last week and there were none of these sort of shenanigans.

Having no ventilation with 80,000+ cases a day is pretty mad

All you have done is damage the restaurant by people thinking it is cold and draughty and made it so I’m pleasant that next time they meet up with friends they think twice about going out and probably decide to stay in and invite people round instead.

You haven’t saved anyone you have probably made it worse.

If you're that worried, don't go out to a restaurant in the first place.

Having the door open when the temperatures are barely above freezing is just unpleasant for everyone.

Grapewrath · 20/12/2021 12:40

You were incredibly rude and selfish. If yo felt wary of the close proximity you should’ve asked the waitress to move you of gone and eaten somewhere else! Who wants to sit in a freezing cold restaurant

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 20/12/2021 13:16

Well I just had a lovely brunch sat outside under a heater, will stick to that for the near future

OP posts:
Tal45 · 20/12/2021 13:26

I think it was absolutely fine for you to ask and then open the door, but when someone shut it because they were cold you should have accepted that or left yourself if it made you uncomfortable. It was very childish to think it was ok for you to keep opening it when they had shut it because they didn't want to sit in a draft. If you were concerned about germs you shouldn't have gone to an indoor restaurant, especially not at Christmas.
