The Christmas dinner or the steak, chips and onion rings. Straight of the bat, which is more appealing?

To me it’s the steak..wondering whether to break with tradition and have this on Christmas Day, first time in my 44 years on earth. Don’t know why that feels so weird fo do! Don’t even like Christmas dinner that much, do you?

I could even go Mexican or curry 😋 all nicer than the Christmas meal

You could change up the Christmas dinner by having things with it that you like more. For example, we have a good free-range chicken with a Mediterranean-ish grain like quinoa with herbs and pomegranate seeds, several veg and salad dishes, yoghurt, harissa etc.

That sounds delicious, but it really isn't a "Christmas Dinner" any more than the steak is! Reminds of those recipe reviews you read online sometimes, where people write how brilliant the recipe is, but then describe how they changed almost every element!

Hummingbirdcake · 15/12/2021 11:30

The Christmas dinner because I love it it’s only once a year and we have steak and chips once a month or so.

Rosebel · 15/12/2021 11:32

Well I like both but has to be Christmas dinner on the 25th.

nokidshere · 15/12/2021 11:34

Neither for me we don't cook on Christmas Day and haven't had a traditional Christmas dinner for over 35yrs.

IgneousRock · 15/12/2021 11:37

I love both but we only eat turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas day, whereas we'd have steak on other occasions. So it has to be turkey!

luverlybubberly · 15/12/2021 11:37

I've lived in countries where it's hard to get hold of turkey joints so we had steak instead - no regrets. You should eat what you fancy imo. You could make it festive with some pigs in blankets on the side or something?

PinkTonic · 15/12/2021 12:09

A fillet steak with chips and bearnaise sauce is a regular Friday night dinner here and Christmas dinner is non negotiable. It’s turkey or goose with crispy roast potatoes, sticky melting roasted root vegetables, stuffing, bread sauce, pigs in blankets and either cranberry or apple depending on bird, sprouts with pancetta or chestnuts and another green vegetable. We have lovely roasts on Sundays but Christmas is special and I don’t go off piste.

Ylvamoon · 15/12/2021 12:09

Steak!
But then, I don't like Turkey. I usually do a roast beef - done at 80°C for 8+ hours in the oven - lovely & juicy - plus the usual trimmings.

Giveaschitt · 15/12/2021 12:14

No one eats for the rest of the year for a reason

I see people saying this all the time - I regularly buy turkey all throughout the year, and they sell it in all the supermarkets, so clearly other people do too. Not the whole bird, but turkey breast, turkey thighs - its delicious, and a healthier alternative to chicken. And the only reason I don't buy the whole bird regularly is because its too big (and takes too long to cook) for a standard Sunday roast, otherwise I absolutely would!

lazylinguist · 15/12/2021 12:19

Definitely the Christmas dinner. If not turkey (which I really like and have never known to be dry or tasteless when cooked by any of my family) then I'd far rather still have the full roast but with rib of beef.

zingally · 15/12/2021 12:25

For me it would be the traditional christmas dinner with all the trimmings.

My sister and her partner have spaghetti bolognaise!

TheHolyPotato · 15/12/2021 12:27

Either but drop the onion rings add in green leaves and a sharp dressing and swap chips for roasties AND mash.
Then again I love the turkey brown meat plus cranberry and stuffing combo.
Choices, choices!

Hemingwayscatz · 15/12/2021 12:29

I’ve never eaten steak and haven’t touched meat since I was 12 so Christmas dinner for me with a veggie main. I don’t think I could deal with chips on Christmas Day, too weird!

mindutopia · 15/12/2021 12:32

Christmas meal, only because it seems more special (only have it once a year unless dh will humour my attempts to do a 'Christmas in October' Sunday lunch!). We have steak often-ish, so seems like a normal weekend meal to me and not so special.

Jaxhog · 15/12/2021 12:34

Turkey for me too. Mainly because I love the trimmings, and turkey is better for you than most of the alternatives. And I like turkey!

Theblacksheepandme · 15/12/2021 12:36

Llioed
I have been to people's houses that say the same as you. Honestly their turkey is not good either but they think it is the best.

Megan2018 · 15/12/2021 12:36

I have never understood the turkey hate, it’s lovely! We do buy premium, free range from farms rather than supermarket. It’s never dry!

We do eat it more often than just Christmas too-often Easter for a whole bird and escalopes during the year when the farm shop has them.

I also love goose and duck. We have also had rib of beef at Christmas too sometimes. But depends who is coming as I like it rare and my family like it cremated which is a travesty.

FireworkParrot · 15/12/2021 12:41

I vote roast dinner on Christmas Day that you purposefully make too much of so you can have leftovers on Boxing Day. My Christmas dinner leftover sandwich (everything chopped up, microwaved so it's hot with just enough gravy added to bind it then put on a buttered roll) is my favourite meal of the entire year.

I do love steak and chips but I see that more as a nice dinner you can have for valentine's, anniversaries etc.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 15/12/2021 12:43

I love a good roast dinner so I'd choose that over steak every time. Mmmmm gravy.....

Erictheavocado · 15/12/2021 12:44

I would go for the steak every time. I always did the full on turkey dinner until one year when circumstances meant I could have exactly what I wanted. It was a revelation to actually enjoy my Christmas Day lunch. Not cooked turkey since. We do usually have a roast with the trimmings, just not turkey. I don't understand why you can't have something else, even if you have that throughout the year - surely you need to enjoy your food? As it happens, this year will probably be turkey because we are going to family for Christmas Day, but otherwise would have been a slow roasted joint of beef.

Ohdofuckofdear · 15/12/2021 12:46

Christmas dinner every time, the whole family(there's 8 of us)love our Christmas dinner.

I cook a different type of Gammon every year to go along side our Turkey and I make lots of different sides, any Turkey and gammon left over I lay out in the evening with a few other party food bits and as good cheeseboard and I'll cook more pigs in blankets for the evening because some of our DC like to fill some crusty rolls with the gammon,Turkey, pigs in blankets and cranberry sauce.

I like a Christmas roast and eat a big steak dinner at least once a week, so whilst very enjoyable it's not feeling like much of a treat.

We normally have a bird (chickens, duck or goose) roast beef and a ham, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, roast sweet potatoes, mashed swede, roast carrots, peas, cabbage, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sauces, gravies, Yorkshire puddings

And sometimes BBQ a big fish if anyone's that way inclined

The two meals do not stack up

We once did a steak version actually, it was also very good, but was a bit more than just a steak and chips approach to a steak dinner Grin

gogohm · 15/12/2021 12:57

Live Christmas dinner but I prefer goose or 3 bird game roast

GremlinDolphin4 · 15/12/2021 13:05
