The Christmas dinner or the steak, chips and onion rings. Straight of the bat, which is more appealing?

To me it’s the steak..wondering whether to break with tradition and have this on Christmas Day, first time in my 44 years on earth. Don’t know why that feels so weird fo do! Don’t even like Christmas dinner that much, do you?

I could even go Mexican or curry 😋 all nicer than the Christmas meal

On almost any given day it’d be the steak for me too! But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a Christmas roast - I really do. I like all food, but steak is one of my top favourites. We have it quite regularly though, so I’m not sure it would feel special.

But at Christmas I do like to do the traditional thing. And I certainly wouldn’t call a goose or duck with all the trimmings a so-so meal. Nor a turkey (as long as it’s cooked well!). Nor, in fact, our traditional Danish flæskesteg (roast pork with beautiful crispy crackling spears). I’d also really miss the leftovers for sandwiches. We do sometimes think we ought to try rib of beef for a truly spectacular centrepiece, but we haven’t done so yet.

I guess the problem is that for many people a Christmas dinner is objectively only so-so. It does have to be done well to be properly enjoyable; I always make a real effort with sides to create a properly luxurious feast menu with well thought-out dishes/courses. That’s easy enough for me to do, though, because I’m a confident cook and I’m also not cooking for vast numbers.

However if steak is what you want to do this year then I’d say definitely do it! But only if it’s for yourself only up to 2 to 4 people because anything more would be hard to do really well I think. Unless you mean to go out to eat...

I could've written this post. I'm 44 and have decided for the first time ever, to have steak on Christmas Day. My husband is going to cook them on the barbecue.

Are you in Australia/New Zealand/South Africa ?

However, I'm also doing a Turkey crown so that the older members of the family can have that if they wish.

Patronising much ?

I won't be doing as much trimmings for the Turkey though, I'm focusing on sides for the steaks.

Well, you know how to make your guests feel welcome, don't you ?

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 15/12/2021 08:16

Mix it up! We've had steak before...with sausage and chestnut stuffing, pigs in blankets, yorkshires, gravy etc...wll the best bits of xmas dinner

WinterCarlisle · 15/12/2021 08:18

Christmas Dinner every time. But would be a vegetarian version. Even when I ate meat about 100 years ago the steak wouldn’t have appealed.

itwasntaparty · 15/12/2021 08:30

We're having rib of beef with all the trimmings. I hate turkey.

There'll be 12 of us and I can't be arsed cooking steak to order. If there were two / four of us I'd go for steak.

AngelicInnocent · 15/12/2021 08:55

Definitely Christmas Dinner. I actually do turkey, ham and beef. Not because we are terribly greedy or only eat meat or something but we have a huge gathering on Boxing Day and do a massive buffet. Since I'm cooking it anyway, might as well do it on Christmas Day and enjoy it twice.

rainbowandglitter · 15/12/2021 09:01

I don't like steak so Xmas Dinner every time. I'm not sure there's anything actually that I'd pick over Xmas Dinner.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 15/12/2021 09:02

Christmas dinner, but only because i'm not a huge fan of red meat.

Hoppinggreen · 15/12/2021 09:04

We go out for a curry on xmas day.
Not huge fans of a roast dinner in our house anyway and rarely eat red meat so to be honest neither of those really appeal

TrashyPanda · 15/12/2021 09:15

Turkey and all the trimmings!
I haven’t had steak for years and don’t miss it at all.

The only reason a turkey would be dry is a not very good cook, who would probably ruin the steak too.

Turkey sandwiches/toasties are amazing.
And then there is turkey broth, made from the bones. So delicious.

stingofthebutterfly · 15/12/2021 09:15

Christmas dinner looks more appealing tbh. We've booked to go out for Christmas lunch this year, and my kids are having chicken nuggets and chips 😆

hangrylady · 15/12/2021 09:17

Christmas dinner for me

MeatyRvita · 15/12/2021 09:19

I enjoy a Christmas dinner but personally would be more than happy with a Indian takeaway, or even a beige freezer buffet!
But DH insists we have to have a proper roast (although we are having lamb instead of turkey so breaking tradition that way) and to be fair he does pull his weight in terms of cooking it so I can’t really complain! Lol

GutsInMay · 15/12/2021 09:22

Christmas dinner, but ours looks nicer.

Also if I was having steak it would be with a nice sauce, maybe peppercorn, and there wouldn’t be onion rings.

Xanadu58 · 15/12/2021 09:25

Christmas Dinner.

Beautiful3 · 15/12/2021 09:33

The steak wins hand down for me!

Acrasia · 15/12/2021 09:41

I’d take the Christmas Dinner over the Steak & Chips, but more controversially, I’d take the onion rings over the Pigs in Blankets.

Helendee · 15/12/2021 09:43

Steak!!

FrownedUpon · 15/12/2021 09:45

Turkey! It would be really weird not to have a full Turkey dinner on Christmas Day. We have curry every week, so don’t want it at Christmas. It’s actually nice to keep some traditions!

IntermittentParps · 15/12/2021 09:48

Honestly, the Christmas dinner. I'm not the hugest fan but I would enjoy the range of veg.

Maybe have the steak and chips on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day.
You could change up the Christmas dinner by having things with it that you like more. For example, we have a good free-range chicken with a Mediterranean-ish grain like quinoa with herbs and pomegranate seeds, several veg and salad dishes, yoghurt, harissa etc.

tearinghairout · 15/12/2021 09:49

Xmas dinner. Never did like steak.

I think the reason turkey is often dry sawdust is because people massively over-cook it. DH follows Jamie Oliver' guidance online and it's surprising how short a time they need. But you rest them for quite a while, which gives you time to do the veg.

GotToGoBye · 15/12/2021 09:50

Christmas dinner, every time, even in summer

PaperMonster · 15/12/2021 09:50

Christmas dinner.

thewhatsit · 15/12/2021 09:54

I don’t think DH could even comprehend Christmas without Christmas dinner. He loves a Sunday roast too when for me it’s just really not that appealing. If it were up to me I’d have Chinese takeaway Blush.

He will do the majority of the cooking on Christmas Day, which is good as I couldn’t put that much time and effort into something I don’t see the point of.

Davros · 15/12/2021 09:56
@Davros What’s up with it 🤷🏻‍♀️
I suppose most roasts, once served, realistically look a bit like that. A photo of a big, brown turkey with veg in serving dishes and sauces in boats would look more appetising. You also need a cracker in your photo or it ain't Christmas!
