The Christmas dinner or the steak, chips and onion rings. Straight of the bat, which is more appealing?

To me it’s the steak..wondering whether to break with tradition and have this on Christmas Day, first time in my 44 years on earth. Don’t know why that feels so weird fo do! Don’t even like Christmas dinner that much, do you?

I could even go Mexican or curry 😋 all nicer than the Christmas meal

The Christmas dinner looks more appealing to me. This year we are having goose, sometimes we have duck and sometimes turkey.

Lanique · 15/12/2021 07:40

Christmas dinner. I eat steak A LOT as it's my favourite food, but I'd rather have a roast on Christmas Day, and a traditional Christmas dinner is lovely.

Some years we do roast beef with trimmings instead, why don't you do that? A slow roast joint is dead easy and about six-eight hours on a low heat.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 15/12/2021 07:40

I guess a lot will depend on how many you are cooking for and what sort of thing you like doing in the evening or boxing day. For me cooking for a large number the full Xmas Dinner is far easier to ensure everyone eats at the same time than fussing around with 10 steaks of different levels from rare to well done all making the table at the same time. It also gives enough left over for boxing day with pickles, bubble and squeak, which everyone loves

@Sleepyquest

I really dislike Christmas dinner. Everyone thinks I'm mad. I've found my people!
I don’t think your mad, Im not fussed over it either, it’s just food, eat what you want we do.
Bunce1 · 15/12/2021 07:43

Christmas dinner! It’s the promo and tradition that I love.

Squirrelblanket · 15/12/2021 07:44

If you think turkey is dry and horrible, you just can't cook. 🤷🏻‍♀️

FingersofFish · 15/12/2021 07:46

Christmas dinner for me, blooming love a roast. I think people should have whatever they enjoy most at Christmas though, a close second for me might be a good pie but I really dislike steak so it defo wouldn't make it to my Christmas table. I think we must be the only family in the world who enjoy the Turkey and do have it all year round!

Nevernottrying · 15/12/2021 07:46

Growing up I hated turkey as it was always dry, much preferred the sausage stuffing. But over the years we’ve perfected it and now everyone who shares Christmas with us raves about it, and there is literally nothing left except the bones! So roast turkey all the way !!😊

bumblingbovine49 · 15/12/2021 07:47

The roast dinner because it has more variety and veg and roast potatoes are do much nicer than chips . Plus I bloody love the cold leftovers including the roast potatoes whereas cold chips are just bleugh.

I also think steak is hard do.well.for a lot of people

oviraptor21 · 15/12/2021 07:48

On Christmas Day - definitely the Christmas dinner - would feel all kinds of wrong not too. Plus it's a wonderful assemblage that I wouldn't make the effort for any other day of the year. Steak and chips - a bit plain but I do like a nicely cooked steak. Either meal can be in danger of the meat being dry but that's in the hands of the chef.
But yes - Christmas dinner for being a feast - a celebratory meal worthy of the occasion.

bumblingbovine49 · 15/12/2021 07:53

Plus I grew up with a mother who always produced perfectly moist meat of whatever kind which was never dry, including turkey. I have no idea how she did it but she rarely made gravy as noone in the family liked it though she would if we had English visitors at our weekly Sunday roast dinners . They were always absolutely delicious with tender delicious meat without gravy of any sort

I do miss my mum - and not just her cooking

Babdoc · 15/12/2021 08:02

Another vote for turkey. And it should never be dry if it's cooked correctly. I wrap mine in whisky soaked streaky bacon, push duck fat and crushed garlic between the skin and the meat, dot the top with more duck fat then seal in tinfoil and virtually steam it on a v low oven for hours, before opening the foil and turning the oven up hot to crisp the bacon and skin at the end.
I also stuff it with v moist apricot and chestnut stuffing in one side of the cavity, and plum with ginger, clove and cinnamon stuffing in the other. They help to steam it from the inside.
The result is delicious, full of flavour, and way better than a boring old slab of steak!

SpookyScarySkeletons · 15/12/2021 08:03

I'm voting steak! Although I have food issues and the thought of a heaving plate of Christmas dinner makes me feel a bit sick. Definitely go for the steak.

mafted · 15/12/2021 08:04

Neither of those look like great examples. However I'd much rather the roast for Christmas, I enjoy all the different elements and flavours and the leftovers.
I do love steak and eat it often, I'm not fussed about the chips or onion rings and it doesn't seem as festive.

I could've written this post. I'm 44 and have decided for the first time ever, to have steak on Christmas Day. My husband is going to cook them on the barbecue. However, I'm also doing a Turkey crown so that the older members of the family can have that if they wish. I won't be doing as much trimmings for the Turkey though, I'm focusing on sides for the steaks.
Practicebeingpatient · 15/12/2021 08:07

We've had all sorts of meat for Christmas dinner This year it's turkey and I will probably get an extra one to put in the freezer for another time. And it won't be dry - it will be delicious. Just like the one I cooked last month was.

Chemenger · 15/12/2021 08:08

I agree, I’ve only ever had dry turkey at cheap work Christmas lunches, home cooked turkey is lovely.
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 15/12/2021 08:09

Christmas Dinner, with the steak and chips on Christmas Eve.

Even if we didn't have turkey, I think I'd have chicken. It's all the trimmings we wouldn't normally do with a standard roast dinner that swing it for me.
Whereas steak and chips is a standard, easy, quick meal so wouldn't feel so special

But it isn't what we think, it's what you and your family prefer. We were discussing what we'd eat if there were only the two of us here for Christmas. Steak would definitely be an option then, although i think we'd be more likely to go to our favourite curry house. .

ToffeeNotCoffee · 15/12/2021 08:11

Christmas Dinner means different things to different people.

To me it's a roast chicken or turkey (I'll gladly eat turkey I just happen to prefer chicken) with a load more trimmings/side dishes i.e. sausages in bacon, bread sauce etc etc.

Steak is delicious. However, to me, it's not Christmas dinner.

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/12/2021 08:13

Christmas dinner

HW1989 · 15/12/2021 08:13

Definitely Christmas dinner! I love a Christmas dinner!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/12/2021 08:13

Turkey dinner every time. I like steak but I’m not mad about it.
But as pps have said, it’s the sides that make turkey special. Mine is never dry, anyway.

Also, the smell of turkey cooking is very Christmassy, to me anyway.

icedcoffees · 15/12/2021 08:14

I love both.

Not a fan of roast meat though so maybe I'd just have all the trimmings and leave the turkey 🤣

Junkmail · 15/12/2021 08:14

I don’t like Christmas dinner. We always have curry!

Anoisagusaris · 15/12/2021 08:14

Christmas dinner, but not the one in your picture! Mine has nicer looking turkey, ham, mashed potatoes as well as roast and no bread sauce.
