Did John love Paul more than any woman?

Following on from the question was Paul McCartney in 1969 the best looking rock star of all time, were John and Paul like David and Jonathan?

AIBU to say that John loved Paul more than any woman?

Hah, I thought this would be a thread about the disciples and whether they were gay Grin, I was confused at first.

I don't like the beatles, sure I get they were massively influential, but that doesn't mean I'd listen to them.

Spitspotsput · 15/12/2021 22:16

I thought of the apostles too!

Spidey66 · 15/12/2021 22:26

I'm 55 and have no idea who the he'll David & Jonathan were, despite growing up indoctrinated into Catholicism. Were they gay?

Allywill · 15/12/2021 22:28

I had a book of press cuttings and on-the-set photos from their films. Don’t know where it went but it had a photo of paul taken on the set of hards days night (I think) caught unawares with the wind blowing his hair across his face and he looked really, well beautiful. I agree he hasn’t aged particularly well but often people who looked great young don’t. I wasn’t around for the hey day of the Beatles (born 1967) but I had an interest in them, and read a lot of books written about them by music journalists and the like. Personally, no I don’t think John loved Paul and vice versa I don’t think Paul loved John. They had a bond certainly and both probably felt the loss of a mother though in different circumstances but I think they were very different people and often annoyed and frustrated each other. Of course that does preclude love in fact it often goes with it but on balance no I don’t think so.

I have no clue about the David and Jonathan reference even after being told it's from the Bible. Saying what's taught in school these days, or references to being a 90s school child doesnt tie in with me - I'm past mid forties and didn't learn anything about the bible! Went to a standard comprehensive with weekly RE lessons, but I'm pretty sure we just learn about other religions, nothing about Christianity. I guess they were trying to help with inclusivity, even back then. Having neither been christened nor taken to Sunday School, nor having a Bible in the house (despite shelves of other books and being encouraged to read anything and everything) I guess it passed me by.

Being rather naïve too, I didn't think the bible had gay men in it?! That's a big surprise to me. I guess I'd better start googling...

Swirlywoo · 15/12/2021 23:30

No Christianity taught at my comp either @Smidge001!

You learn something new every day.

Jonathan and David weren’t gay, as far as I understand it. They had a great love for each other, but it was a platonic love.

John Lennon formed intense emotional bonds with other men, one of whom was McCartney. The women in his life were either domineering mother figures (Mimi and Yoko) or secondary to men (Cynthia and May Pang). I think there’s no doubt that he loved Paul more than any woman and that the love was reciprocated, but perhaps not in the same way.

John Lennon was a seriously angry, self-loathing, depressed and damaged person who seemed unable to form "healthy" attachments to anyone. He was either dismissive and abusive (Cynthia etc ) or completely co-dependent with no in-between. He was also conflicted about his sexuality and had an inner loneliness that you cannot miss in any of his songs. "Some kind of solitude is measured out in you / You think you know me but you haven't got a clue."

Of course he loved Paul. Didn't he say outright that Paul was his first love and Yoko his second? I think Paul understood but he was/is not as damaged and didn't share John's issues, the love of his life was Linda.

Walliams and Ross I believe.

Wafty · 16/12/2021 23:44

'David and Jonathan' were Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook. They had a couple of hits and also write songs for others. I remember them, I'm 67. I think Roger Greenaway is gay and I think they wrote the Coca Cola song.

Wafty · 16/12/2021 23:46

I assume their stage name has biblical significance

PaulForeverYokoNever · 16/12/2021 23:58

I was actually referring to David and Jonathan from the bible; I haven’t even heard of these two.

So David and Jonathan were two Rogers. Right. That clears that up then. Grin

PaulForeverYokoNever · 17/12/2021 00:01

Some good comments on the thread though and more Beatle People than I would have thought.

This is correct.

Fun fact: The original lyrics to Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah began, "I heard there was a secret chord / That Roger played and it pleased the Lord."

GoodnightGrandma · 17/12/2021 07:23

My DM always said Pete Best was the best looking Beatle, and the first night that Ringo played the Cavern all the girls were shouting ‘we want Pete’.

Mackmama · 17/12/2021 07:46

I’ve loved watching Get Back and I think the partnership between Paul and John is incredible. Paul seems to be the driving force, but they’re at their best when they’re working together, totally natural like neither one has to explain anything to the other they just know what the other is thinking.

This deserves a Grin

cosmopolitanplease · 17/12/2021 11:57

What we really need to know is did David and Jonathan ever go on a round the world trip in a westerly direction? And what exactly was in the Rogers' wills? Hmm

So many questions. Grin But sounds like an excellent plot for a film. A Tale of two Rogers? David and Jonathan Go Large?
@PlanktonsComputerWife

I know it’s very fashionable to say that George was the most talented, but it shows a real lack of insight. In reality, George wrote four songs that anyone has ever heard of, and he wasn’t even a great guitarist - that’s clear from the Get Back footage.
I feel so sorry for George while watching Get Back. He is really trying and yet he seems a bit lost and feels undervalued. Macca is a bit of a twat to him at times. John comes across as a lot more laid back than I thought he would be.

I love watching Paul and John jam. Paul is obviously the driving force at that point.... John has plans, George looks like he wants to fuck it all off and go and meditate and /or be Clapton or Dylan. It's fascinating.

I love Paul now but think he has grown some humility as he has aged.

PaulForeverYokoNever · 17/12/2021 12:38

To explain the David and Jonathan analogy:

www.1517.org/articles/friendship-in-the-old-testament-david-and-jonathan

‘The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David. Jonathan saw in David a reflection of whom he himself was.’

PaulForeverYokoNever · 17/12/2021 13:30

I thought George came across quite badly. Immature and arrogant, acting like he was as talented as Jimi Hendrix and like no-one had the right to tell him what to play. And so so negative, shutting down everyone’s ideas for the live show that they, as a group, had agreed to do.

Paul couldn’t win in that situation. But he acted like the only adult in the room.

To be fair to George, his ‘resignation’ from the group was precipitated by a fight with John that happened off-camera. He’d had enough of whatever game John was playing, using Ono to provoke and cause bad feeling in the studio. I don’t blame George for that. But in general, I thought his attitude was lousy.
