How do people keep voting in the tories?

I'd love it if tory voters could say why they vote the way they do given that there's ample evidence for how utterly incompetent they are (11 years). Especially in the last election. With that not-fit-for-purpose idiot in charge - edited by MNHQ
I also keep writing to my MP saying that if they are going to pretend we have democracy then they need to scrap FPTP.

AIBU that we should allow people with no sense to vote or
AINBU am I right in that people should have to factor history and rare sense into their decision making?

Jeremy Corbyn

Itsnotover · 14/12/2021 11:23

Because they don’t read manifestos.

Shoxfordian · 14/12/2021 11:23

Yep anyone who doesn’t vote the way you do has no sense: clearly

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/12/2021 11:24

@Cheerychirpy

Jeremy Corbyn
Exactly- was the OP asleep

Also love the idea that you don’t let people vote who don’t agree with you, very China/ Russia/ Zimbabwe of you

Glentheredbeakbattleostrich · 14/12/2021 11:25

Why don't you have a go at the utter failure that is the labour party? They are not fit for purpose. What about those who chose not to vote? Those who spoil their ballot?

Overthebow · 14/12/2021 11:25

Because I’d rather conservatives than labour being in power. I agree with their general principals and the majority of their manifestos, more than I agree with other parties. In other words, the best of a bad bunch.

triceratopsatemyhat · 14/12/2021 11:26

Because Labour.

Classica · 14/12/2021 11:27

English people are at heart conservative, and very much still in thrall to a public school accent. They think these people are their betters so they do the modern version of tugging the forelock: putting an X next to their name on the ballot paper.

Overthebow · 14/12/2021 11:27

And yes why anyone voted for Jeremy Corbyn is beyond me.

TheCreamCaker · 14/12/2021 11:29

Jeremy Corbyn
Dianne Abbott
Keir Starmer

Saoirsesersha · 14/12/2021 11:29

Best of a bad bunch. Labour’s covid stance is also alienating some people that I know as they’d be even harsher with restrictions

inkworks273 · 14/12/2021 11:29

I honestly don't know why working class people would ever vote conservative. I'm in Scotland and we NEVER vote Tory and yet here we are still landed with them.

Stripyhoglets1 · 14/12/2021 11:32

Because the tories have cleverly engineered a cultural shift that voting left is a bad thing due to wokism/out of touch elites/trying to stop brexit etc. Escalated by having the ridiculous Jeremy Corbyn as leader for years. And tbh the issue of Labour supporting self ID is part of that problem.
So working class people who never would have voted tory now will - as they feel out of touch with Labour.
Very frustrating when the majority of Labour policies would probably make life better for people - and the tories really are only in it for the wealthy and elites.

Karmdenswitme · 14/12/2021 11:32

They don't judge you for being a racist, had a problem with Corbyn, Blair, Brown and Miliband all gone but still, promised to reduce immigration from certain countries, lower social welfare, lower taxes for wealthy, Brexit since incl of Eastern European etc

Justcallmebebes · 14/12/2021 11:34

These sorts of questions make me laugh because it's put that there's a totally acceptable alternative out there but these millions of Tory voters can't see it. There's not and that's why they keep getting in

OhPeeQueue · 14/12/2021 11:36

Can Andy Burnham or Sadiq Khan ever become Labour leaders?

girlmom21 · 14/12/2021 11:36

What was the better alternative in the last election?

StillWalking · 14/12/2021 11:38

Because the thought of Labour being in power makes me even more fearful for the future of our country than I currently am with Boris and co in charge. Caught between a rock and a hard place politically ....... they are the lesser evil IMO.

inmyslippers · 14/12/2021 11:38

^^ think you've nailed it. Life long Labour supporter but I just don't recognise them. They pander to the vocal minority ignoring the actual working class.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 14/12/2021 11:40

Well clearly people have different political opinions. Has this come as a huge shock to you? Some people think the Tories are the best option. Others vote for the Communist party or the National Front because they believe those parties are the best option. Some people (like me) are floating voters and pick whoever seems the best bet at the time, or vote based on a particular single issue or local issue.

People don't need to be educated into a different way of thinking. Things would be much calmer and less hate-filled if everyone could just accept that we all think different things and that's fine.

SammyScrounge · 14/12/2021 11:42

@TheCreamCaker

Jeremy Corbyn Dianne Abbott Keir Starmer
Nicely put
JustDanceAddict · 14/12/2021 11:43

Corbyn, unfortunately was unelectable for various reasons.

Iknowbest · 14/12/2021 11:43

There was a referendum on changing the first past the post system

It was rejected by the voting public

Stripyhoglets1 · 14/12/2021 11:44

I'm a life long Labour supporter too. I do still vote for them but feel no sadness corbyn didn't become PM.
Just so much sadness that with the tories as the alternative for over 20 years we've now left Europe and the NHS will be properly privatised, but in the clever way the tories do things that means we'll be paying insurance so their mates get rich - but still get a shit service.

GreenWhiteViolet · 14/12/2021 11:44

I voted for them last time as the least bad option, not because I liked them. The alternatives were worse. If there were another election tomorrow I'd probably spoil my ballot. None of them come close to deserving my vote.

('People who disagree with me politically are stupid and shouldn't be allowed to vote' is a nastier elitist opinion than any I've heard from Tories, though.)
