How do people keep voting in the tories?

I'd love it if tory voters could say why they vote the way they do given that there's ample evidence for how utterly incompetent they are (11 years). Especially in the last election. With that not-fit-for-purpose idiot in charge - edited by MNHQ
I also keep writing to my MP saying that if they are going to pretend we have democracy then they need to scrap FPTP.

AIBU that we should allow people with no sense to vote or
AINBU am I right in that people should have to factor history and rare sense into their decision making?

@chaosmaker

Have you ever considered that if the political landscape in the UK bothers you this much then maybe you should put some effort into it and become an actual candidate for the party you support?

Or do you prefer whining about the political shitshow behind your screen and want everyone else to fix it for you?

If you want change, be part of the change.

Octavia174 · 14/12/2021 12:29

@brokendark

Because the other parties are even more utterly hopeless.

I used to vote labour but they made themselves unelectable under Corbyn and remain unelectable if a woman MP is unable to attend their conference due to safety concerns for stating a simple biological fact, the Leader condemns her for that fact but does not condemn and expel those threatening her for that fact.

I'm not voting for reality denying vote grubbing cowards who sell women under the bus.

Its a very difficult subject, do you care that 1 in 4 trans teens try to commit suicide? they are marginalised, often scared to even leave the house, subject to attack, even murdered.

Do we feed that narrative?

Equally, we have the right to go about our business without seeing, what we consider a man in our space.

Labour condemned the threats Rosie Duffield got, however, abuse dished out to our MPs is quite frankly sickening, vile threats of gang rape, mutilation, murder are common place.

We've had two MPs murdered in the last 5 years, Raynor has panic alarms all around her house, her kids want her to pack up politics.

At least Labour are not sweeping the issues under the carpet, do you know the Tories views/ideas on Trans?

Beckert · 14/12/2021 12:30

Because there's no other viable alternative. The Tories may be shit. The rest are even worse.

Jessie75 · 14/12/2021 12:31

If you voted Conservative if you’re either a millionaire or an idiot check your wallet to see which one you are.

Wizardora83 · 14/12/2021 12:32

Oh bless you @Jessie75 Grin

DirectionToPerfection · 14/12/2021 12:35

I find the argument that 'the rest are worse' pretty unconvincing.

People clearly have very low standards if they believe a dishonest, incompetent, self-serving buffoon is a better bet for Prime Minister than someone like Keir Starmer.

inferiorCatSlave · 14/12/2021 12:35

In Wales - 20+ years Welsh Labour has been in power and they've had charge of the Welsh NHS.

They also have charge of education.

A large number of the national NHS on it knees stories I've seen have come from Wales frequently my bit.

I have serious concerns about my DC education.

The state of the NHS and education system is freqently given as a reason on MN not to move to Wales - (one of the nicest bit of the UK I've ever lived).

In our area the scond party is conservative. I'm keeping an eye on all the parties - but I'm serioulsy unwelmed with Labour's governance so far.

Angelton · 14/12/2021 12:35

You’re worse than mad if you do that. Not just because you’re unemployed if you don’t get elected. It’s worse than that - people have actually been murdered. No sense in putting yourself at that risk imo.

user1471505494 · 14/12/2021 12:35

@Classica

English people are at heart conservative, and very much still in thrall to a public school accent. They think these people are their betters so they do the modern version of tugging the forelock: putting an X next to their name on the ballot paper.
Bullshit. I know a lot of Tory voters from all walks of life and none of them think like that
MistyGreenAndBlue · 14/12/2021 12:37

@Angelton

The Tories are the only party that knows what a woman is. Until that situation changes there is literally no viable alternative.
Oh the other parties know all right. They know EXACTLY who to silence and abuse when it comes right down to it.
Jk987 · 14/12/2021 12:39

Not a logical or rational post because you can't screen whether people have any sense or not. The post projects your emotions. The AIBU options are hypothetical.

Classica · 14/12/2021 12:40

Bullshit. I know a lot of Tory voters from all walks of life and none of them think like that

Whatever you say...

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/12/2021 12:40

A combination of a RW press and single issue politics. It's ok for a Tory government to be corrupt liars who have wrecked the country because "Labour".🙄

AndARiverBeneathYourFeet · 14/12/2021 12:41

@TheCreamCaker

Jeremy Corbyn Dianne Abbott Keir Starmer
Ah yes, all definitely less competent than Gove, Johnson and Patel. Hmm
Beckert · 14/12/2021 12:41

Self preservation I think you'll find. Life might be shit under the Tories. It would be intolerable under labour. I say that as a once life long labour voter. No more though.

brokendark · 14/12/2021 12:42

@FangsForTheMemory

Because the Conservatives have managed to convince a lot of people that 1. If you're a 'winner' you vote Conservative. 2. If you vote Labour, you will be worse off financially.

People STILL believe point 2. because the newspapers in this country are all owned by very very rich people who WOULD be worse off financially under Labour.

What depresses me is that many, many people, do not look behind the headlines at what Conservative governments really do.

Yes, everyone who has a different opinion to you is too thick to spot fake news, unlike free thinking, clever ole you.

It might interest you to know that in research that was done on this not very long ago, those people who rated themselves most highly as able to spot 'fake news' were the least able to actually spot 'fake news'.

Queeen · 14/12/2021 12:42

I truly don't believe they got more votes. I kniwca lot of people, and reading on here too, hardly anyone I know (two, out of many hundreds) votes tory, and hardly anyone on here admits to voting tory either.
Johnson was pathetic abd repugnant in the 2019 election. Corbyn drew crowds everywhere. I just don't believe the result.

Beckert · 14/12/2021 12:43

Ah yes, all definitely less competent than Gove, Johnson and Patel

Yep. They are. You're right.

Cheesewineandpickle · 14/12/2021 12:43

I think the Tories are the better option for working class and poorer people. Historically they weren’t but they are now. Labour are for public service workers who are unionised.

Evergreenblue · 14/12/2021 12:43

@Jessie75

If you voted Conservative if you’re either a millionaire or an idiot check your wallet to see which one you are.
And this is why the left continually fail, Shut down/abuse/label any opposing view.

I'm in awe of how you convince others they might be wrong.

AndARiverBeneathYourFeet · 14/12/2021 12:43

@BelperLawnmower

Corbyn. I remember years ago discussing with younger Labour friends that by voting in Corbyn as leader they were sending the country into a right-wing spiral. It was so predictable and avoidable. The path of our country would have been entirely different without Corbyn as leader.
here it is again, "BUT CORBYN!!"

It'll be 2078, the robots overlords will be here, and floating heads in glass jars will still be screaming "BUT CORBYN!!!!!!!"

Stellaris22 · 14/12/2021 12:44

Because in the UK the media tell people how to vote and are allowed to get away with outright lies when the opposition scares them financially.

Anyone who actually read the Corbyn manifesto would struggle for rational arguments against it.

Even after everything Boris has done and gotten away with you see the idea of Labour being in charge as worse.

Kshhuxnxk · 14/12/2021 12:44

Best of a bad lot in Scotland tbh.

Classica · 14/12/2021 12:44

@Cheesewineandpickle

Elaborate the ways in which the Tories are the best option for the poor and the working class.
EatSleepRantRepeat · 14/12/2021 12:46

Because I spent 30 years living under a Labour council and MP and I've never seen such cronyism, corruption and ineptitude. My mum's local Labour Councillor has been on twitter referring to local women as "dogs" as well as other offensive ideas.

I despise the main Tory cabinet but our local Tory MP now is great, gets very involved with community initiatives and when I email him about an issue, his office takes action. I don't agree with everything on his voting record but that's unlikely to happen unless we finally get a female centrist MP.
